I spend about 10 hours a day in front of my machine, seriously, and that'd be more if I was working instead of attending class.
I think that this device would help me spend less time at my machine.. When I want to check my mail quickly, I won't have to run upstairs to do it, and get caught in the whole "Well, while I'm here let me just see if anything new is on Slashdot/k5/AICN" time trap. I swear, sometimes I just go up to check my mail and end up losing a couple of hours.

What we REALLY need is open source software that plays DVDs, mp3s, has Tivo functionality, etc etc. Basically every type of media would be playable/recordable. You'd use one of these webpads as a remote, interfacing to the media server over 802.11 with an apache interface. That would be my dream entertainment setup.
As an aside, why doesn't Tivo sell their software as a commercial app? They make their money off the service anyway, not the boxes, so why not? I'd like to be able to build a machine with as much storage and as many TV tuners as I want, using Tivo's excellent software for recording & playback. Sure, it runs on a PowerPC chip now, but I'm sure they could easily port it to x86. I guess their partners Philips & Sony might be a bit pissed though.

Think 802.11 and all your mp3s stored on the network.. This device really doesn't need much local storage once you add wireless ethernet.
This thing isn't for bringing to Starbucks, use a real laptop for that. I want one of these for sitting in my living room and doing quick tasks like checking my mail.
This portable PlayStation console is an attempt to break nintendo's portable monopoly.
Umm.. no it isn't. It's a guy who thought it would be cool to have a portable playstation. He has nothing to do with Sony. He's not going to produce the unit at all, mostly because he thinks Sony would sue him.
The average family car doesn't have enough juice to power both a TV and a PS1 console.
I ran a Dreamcast and a 19" TV off of a power inverter plugged into my car a few months ago. No problems at all, just had to start the car once in a while.
They could call it Operation Speghetti and Meatballs for all anyone really cares.
How do you tell a mother her son was killed during "Operation Spaghetti & Meatballs"? That's why they have these kind of names, you can't just use something silly, it has to at least sound like it's worth dying for.

Maybe so, but we've had an average of one every three years since then.
What we need is for Bush to countermand the executive order banning assassinations. This attack was precipitated by one person leading a small organization. Military strikes will cause civilian casualties which make us no better than the terrorists. Assassination isn't brutal in this situation, it's justified.
We might not even have to do it ourselves, if we offer a big enough reward for the heads of those responsible. Would $10 million do? How about $100 million? No matter how dedicated and fanatic your gurads and followers are, for enough money some one will pull it off. $100 million is peanuts compared to the cost of a large military response.
I think the best way for the American people to feel avenged though would be the capture of those responsible followed by a trial, and if found guilty a televised public execution. They talked about it doing that for McVeigh..
The PATH train tunnel leads to a station directly underneath the south tower, and there are subway tunnels nearby. As far as using them to get to survivors, I kind of doubt the tunnels have much structural integrity left. I doubt they were built strong enough to have a 110 story building dropped on them.
You know why? Because any passenger on a hijacked plane is going to try to stop the terrorists now.
Before, I think most people would figure, "OK, I'm going to be held hostage, we'll land somewhere, there'll be demands, and if I sit tight, I might survive this."
Now, they'll be thinking more along the lines of "If someone doesn't stop this guy, he'll fly us into a building.." They'll be willing to risk their lives attacking the terrorists, because it's all the chance they have.
A guy with just a knife? When twenty unarmed passengers rush him, how many will he be able to kill before they disarm him? A few, but it's better than everyone dying in a burning wreck.
I think Bush looked like a deer in the headlights today. CNN showed him crossing the White House lawn from his chopper and the look on his face was.. just not as confident as I'd like. The statement was the same..
Well, IANAP (I am not a pilot) but how hard could it really be? They weren't concerned with taking off or landing, and they could have had the regular pilots fly them to the general vicinity of the target. Then they kill the pilot, and all they have to do is steer the plane into the building. How hard could it be? A few days of flight sim training?
Of course, I'm totally talking out my ass.. Any pilots out there have an opinion on this?
Plenty of us on cable modems used be on xDSL, before the DSL companies started dropping like flies.
After two providers died without warning, and my account was sold to different ISPs a couple of times, I decided on cable because cable companies have apparently figured out that you need to MAKE money in order to stay in business.
Don't get me wrong, I'd certainly rather have DSL, but I need reliability above all. If and when I ever get DSL again, I'll be keeping the cable modem as well as a backup.

I really don't see what this OS offers that Linux doesn't have.
No one made claims about it offering anything that Linux doesn't have. It's a neat hack. The guy thought of something that hadn't been done before, wondered if it could be done, and then did it. An excellent hack is its own reward.
The standalone TiVo, as opposed to the DirectTiVo, doesn't have dual tuners. The DirectTiVo has dual tuners, but lacks MPEG compression chips, so you can't record from any source other than DirectTV.
Sounds like the Linux guy knew enough to look busy so he didn't get laid off like you did.. ;)
If you had read the story, you'd know it comes in two versions. One runs Linux, the other WinCE. So wake up!!

I don't think anyone's going to be complaining for quite a while about time taken by airport security..

What video games and movies were these terrorists exposed to that caused them to commit such a heinous crime?
Yes, it's tongue in cheek (and possibly inappropriate), but I'm not so sure I'm really kidding.
