Sure they send your IP address and your browser details, and all file name extensions, all URLs visited w/Parental Controls enabled, all PnP devices installed (so your complete hardware specs), your Games folder(?!) etc. I'm not sure what else gets sent but from the list they provided I'm sure there's plenty more.

Activation, Customer Experience Improvement Program (CEIP), Device Manager, Driver Protection, Dynamic Update, Event Viewer, File Association Web Service, Games Folder, Error Reporting for Handwriting Recognition, Input Method Editor (IME), Installation Improvement Program, Internet Printing, Internet Protocol version 6 Network Address Translation Traversal, Network Awareness (somewhat), Parental Controls, Peer Name Resolution Service, Plug and Play, Plug and Play Extensions, Program Compatibility Assistant, Program Properties--Compatibility Tab, Program Compatibility Wizard, Properties, Registration, Rights Management Services (RMS) Client, Update Root Certificates, Windows Control Panel, Windows Help, Windows Mail (only with Windows Live Mail, Hotmail, or MSN Mail) and Windows Problem Reporting are the main features and services in Windows Vista that collect and transmit user data to Microsoft.

Looks like a lot more data than an IP address.

Well we don't even know in any certain manner that the cosmic background radiation is anything but a localized event, say a still-dissipating nearby supernova or hitherto unknown stellar phenomena. The big bang theory doesn't hinge on background radiation though, we just use it to estimate the age of the universe. There are many other factors contributing to the theory of the origin of the universe though, so even if it drops below ambient levels it won't hinder other avenues of approach on the big bang theory.

"Buzz them?" Arthur began to feel that Ford was enjoying making life difficult for him.

"Yeah", said Ford, "they buzz them. They find some isolated spot with very few people around, then land right by some poor soul whom no one's ever going to believe and then strut up and down in front of him wearing silly antennae on their heads and making beep beep noises. Rather childish really."

Well basically you had a set of coprocessors Agnus, Paula and Denise.

Agnus was the memory controller chip (like the Sun chip), and had the blitter and copper which had independent access to the I/O bus and main+video memory (well video memory for the screen you were using could be anywhere in ram, allowing simple double buffering etc.) The copper has a simplified instruction set (move, wait and skip) and was tied to raster timings and good for screen effects while the blitter did blitting, and you could perform logic operations from 3 inputs and polygon fills. All the processors including the CPU go through Agnus to get to memory.

Denise is the video chip, and also handled the mouse/joystick ports. It was quite advanced for its day, with up to 64 colours(!) out of a 12 bit colour palette, and supported 8 sprites with collision detection (you could in fact use dozens of sprites by changing the pointers inbetween horizontal scanlines, the limit was only 8 sprites per scanline)

Paula was the sound chip with 4 channels, stereo output and a decent sampling rate (>22khz) and handled the other I/O (disk, serial port etc.).

So yeah, you could use the blitter (Agnus) to read from the floppy controller (Paula) to video memory while the cpu did something useful.

The farmers wouldn't stop, they'd just move to the next fence. They do have complete jurisdiction on their servers though, and it seems that's the best place to exact justice via mass bannings. Still, all the banning in the world won't stop the black market, it seems an EvE style solution of creating a legitimate market is a better way to reduce the black market economy, if not eliminate it entirely.

    You have it all backwards.

Lower class people may have a hard time defending themselves, but, they also have very little to lose.

Actually, they have the most to lose, because they will almost certainly lose the little they have.

Middle class people have something to lose, but most live little better than paycheck-2-paycheck. Very few have savings. Most are already heavily in debt.

Another few thousand of debt could easily be enough to relegate them to lower class status.

The upper class have much to lose, but have no real reason to fight. Better to write a check and do away with the whole mess than to pay a lawyer.

They have the least to lose, so they eat the loss and go on their merry way.

Those who have little, treasure what little they have more than any other.

I'd say yes. While it is still trivial to pirate games for the PC with the right tools, it is much more difficult for the consoles. Still, I'd think the levels of piracy would be comparable in percentage terms, but in volume music would win out.

That said, the music industry has had a couple of surges in widespread piracy, first cassette tapes then downloads. The games industry has a rapid turnover of both protection mechanisms and the titles themselves, making it much more difficult to pirate during the few months that a game is popular after release.

Music has a greater timeless quality, while most games are fairly transient. Piracy of 20+ year old games is much less an issue than piracy of 20+ year old music. (especially now that most works will never enter the public domain *sigh*)
