Were people trying to DESCRIBE the year 2007 with those words? Because I can see that being a way to pick the word of the year. Although in that case I'd go with "subprime."
BTW, if TFA said what criteria they use for "word of the year," I didn't read it. (Of course not, this is Slashdot.)

There are many factors which prevent Linux from being widely acceptable, but having GNOME vs KDE business belongs to the major one. Funny, I'd say Vi vs. Emacs would be a more major one. Or even Free Software vs. Open Source Software. Good thing Stallman had nothing to do with those.

The Auto industry can do that because by law, all cars have to be put through a standardized set of crash tests. The car with the highest scores in its class can say that in its ads because "this car is safer than all others" was tested. Firefox and IE don't get put through the same set of tests from by the same people, so looking at tests boils down to finding out who paid for the tests, and finding out whether you trust that company. Since you wouldn't use the browser if you didn't like the company in the first place, the test is useless. By contrast, all auto manufacturers pay the same amount to the same group to have their cars tested, so you're not taking the auto manufacturers at their word, you're trusting the laboratory.

Hell, with how lawyer crazy they are, I bet the RIAA would go crazy if someone even went around making CD's that just screwed up Windows computers and put Sony's name on it.

You just haven't been talking to the right people. The Veterans of Foreign Wars has homes set up for disabled veterans where they make plastic poppies. Non-disabled veterans then set up tables outside stores and whatnot, and sell them to passersby. The proceeds go back into funding the homes for disabled veterans. Though this happens year-round, it is usually stepped up around Memorial Day and Veterans' Day.

What Microsoft did was pretty much muscling all the gas stations out of town so they could jack up the price, which is illegal. California made them give some of the money back.
