  2. This is how libraries work. on Authors Guild Sues Google Over Print Program · · Score: 2, Informative

I can go to my local library and get any CD or book, for a limited time. If google wants to be the online library of the future, I could see them implementing some kind of thing where you are tagged by state, and they have like 10 books that you can check out per state (10 google branches). I mean, if the argument is that 'you could copy the text and have a local copy'.. well christ, any real library book I check out I could photocopy or OCR, it sounds to me like they have a fundamental issue with the entire library system to begin with.

  3. This is all a sham. on Free 3D Animation DAZ|Studio 1.0 Released · · Score: 1, Flamebait

    What kind of 3d software:

    1) has no modeling tools
    2) lists 'rotate, translate, and scale with visual feedback' as a fucking 'feature'?! Or 'multiple views' I mean this is 3D SOFTWARE, right?

Here's the shimmy on this product from someone in the business. This guy is giving away free software to pose characters he makes in a real 3d package. He is giving the software out free, and charging for the content. This is not an '3d package'; this is more like poser or some app where you manipulate unoriginal content of others. Akin to a barbie dressup game; you pose the dolls he makes, and to market it, he has people post that is is some kind of 'free 3d animation package'. It is an application that lets you pose dolls you purchase from him.

I am really trying to pull my punches here, as Daz is the creator of some of my fav old school plugins for real 3d apps.

And don't get me wrong; this is a great tool for pervs who want to post a naked 'virtual girl'.

Apple and Nintendo do this a lot. They release the same products over and over again, with identical functionalities, hoping that people will be vain or stylish enough to want something that looks sleeker. I mean look at Nintendo, they have released how many Gameboy Advance systems (3?) all with the same exact functionality. Apple has released how many iPods? A company that claims to innovate, while many, many competitors have been releasing music *and* video players for almost 4 years now *for cheaper than apple's music only players*..

It's the same with entertainment media formats. I like a movie, but to see it at home I need the DVD, to watch it on my PSP I need the UMD, etc..

When I do try to play by the rules and order a DVD from the US of a movie I want to see (ie.. incredibles) It won't play on my player because of the region code.

I am not saying that downloading and watching the dailyshow everyday is right, but there is definitely a moral grey area. Even with the most expensive satellite package, I can only get this 'dailyshow weekly update' on CNN.

I mean I can see how shows ripped without commercials would be frowned upon, but they advertise products that aren't available here anyway.

  15. Who cares!? They act like a bunch of babies.. on Apple Subpoenas, Sues Over Leaks · · Score: 0, Troll

I mean it's common knowledge that Apple will sue anyone who tries to leak any information about their products, or even mimics them. They themselves are always less than forthcoming, they prefer to 'surprise' people with a flashy new product at MacWorld. Which is one of the only reasons people attend. And if someone maked an OS skin or product that looks anything like theirs, they pounce, because that is their ain selling point: pomp and stylish marketing jazz.

When the only thing setting you apart from the competittion, and the only thing allowing you to sell over-priced merchandice is the look of the product and the jazz of your PR, these kind of leaks are a big deal.

Steve Jobs has been known to throw tantrums about these things. They have very strict rules for anyone working with Apple. Many of you might remember back at MacWorld NY (2000) ATI released some Radeon specs a few days before the conference, and Steve Jobs threw a tantrum! He pulled the ATI tech demo from the keynote and all the Radeon cards were pulled from the Apple machines on the show floor!

I dont have the time to go into it, but before you get your Mac friends to mod this down, google it for yourself, or even look on slashdot.. there have been stories about this, and things like Apple yanking media passes to MacWorld from anyone who speculates what they will be showing off that year.

  16. used games and game rentals on Game Industry Not Bigger Than Hollywood · · Score: 1

Do these figures take into account used games and game rentals?

Almost every game store is pushing very, very hard to sell used merchandise. They offer 'lifetime warranties' on CDs and DVDs (but not against scratching or damage!) and they purposefully steer parents to used titles, if you have been in a game store you have seen it. This income is not shared with the game publisher, or anyone else but the game store itself.

These greedy sons of bitches now sell used games for the same price as new games, and pocket all the money. At EB Games Far Cry sells for 35 dollars used, the same price it sells for new! this is 10 months after it was released. There is no excuse for ripping the allowance out of their hands like this.

  23. Wow.. this is an old topic.. on Why Apple Should Port Games · · Score: 1, Troll

I was a Mac User for ages, and this sure is a sour topic. Here is the answer to a majority of the Macintosh problems:

Not enough people own Macs. When you are only 2% of the global computer userbase, nothing gets ported to your platform, and when it does, it is buggy and you are ALWAYS the last to get updates/patches.

Don't take my word for it, the high and mighty Adobe even launched a "PC Preferred" campaign, and refused to port Photoshop to OSX at a time when EVERY mac was shipping with OSX. Apple users had to wait for the next whole release.

These aren't games I am talking, I am talking about Graphic software. Mac zealots love to talk about how the Mac is for artists.. pfft!

Alias Maya (industry standard 3D software) was FINALLY ported to OSX, and it was a joke! It was so buggy and lacked so many options, it wasn't even SMP capable!! heh..

I love Apple and I love the spirit of competittion, I have been a Mac user much of my life. But why are Macs always treated like the retarded child of the computer industry? Look at the guy pictured in the article; he's smiling, he's so proud 'THEY DID IT!'

It seems like any time the Mac platform does something that is remotely interesting people rejoice and it is plastered everywhere. Would this story be on the front page if PCs were used? I doubt it, even if they were running Linux.

It's just like this weird thing where anything, even commonplace events get blown out of porportion just because Macs were used, as if the entire platform blows and it's amazing anything gets done, which is not the case. Maybe it is just the Mac user hubris as pictured above, but it comes across as this weird feeling I mentioned earlier. Touting that the macs 'can do!' things PCs do all the time makes them seem inferior and retarded, like they need the positive reinforcement.
