I am just going to reply to myself in order to reply to most of what was said here.

You all talk about things like Tarzan, and SouthPark. These are 2D animated characters placed on flat planes in a 3D environment. Saying Tarzan was 3D is a huge slap in the face to the best sketch artist/animator that has ever lived: Glen Keane.

You talk about Futurama's use of 3D, and how some things are rigid; yes, disney and many others have moved to using cel shaded 3D for vehicles; this is nowhere _close_ to drawing them. Take a look at some of the vehicles from Fate of Atlantis, and then look at Cruella DeVille's car and tell me which one has character.

Speaking of character, to my knowledge, the only full 3d cel shaded character that has had his share of shots was the robot in Treasure Planet. Yeah sure robots in other movies, but they never really emoted much.

When the computer renders something for you, it is in perfect perspective, there is no line difference between frames. It is rigid and cold. The ship in Futurama is this rigid object that rotates on an odd axis, and never really squashes and stretches, it sticks out like a sore thumb.

This is the problem that 3D and 2D have, they are not the same, and do not fit together; don't take my word for it, go see the latest abortion of the Ghost in the Shell franchise.

It will be many, many years before we can emulate 2D animation with 3D, and then, what's the point, why not draw it? Not to say that there aren't great applications for NPR like the non photorealistic camera, shown off at SIGGRAPH 2004. Also, it only read ID3 tage and maintained a database you would sort through. So if your albums didnt have ID3 tags you were screwed, on top of that you couldn't have dupee database entries, so any albums with general ID3 tags wouldn't transfer to it.. BLAH!

Not to mention Archos value, and support for advanced users. Such a community has grown up around the old Jukebox recorders that there is a website available to fix nearly any issue. Especially bad cracked solder joints.

The Jukeboxes (20GB) were available on Amazon.com and other places for 90 dollars for a time. And yes they were cheaply made, but hats off to Archos for bring HD players to the masses, and now Portable Media Players..

How about a *true* self healing HD or optical media (CD/DVD).

Maybe in a much larger scale, perhaps a motherboard that has reprogrammable chips, so that when your modem burns out from a power surge, it can reprogram some other modular chipset (audio, etc, to take over) would work. But that would mean every chip would be re-taskable, and more powerful than needed to do it's job, so that it could take distributed tasks from another. Yes, the card is ~40 bucks, but unlimited wifi on sprint or T-Mobile something else that has decent coverage is easily 40-90 bucks a month or more. In addition to a cellular bill or something.

By people 'looking for free wifi' they are admitting that paying for it is cost prohibitive, but they could still afford a laughably expensive iPod, and they live in one of the most expensive cities in the world.

These people are looking for free wifi usually because they feel 'cool' like the cheated the man or something, not because they can't afford it, or because they are extremely frugal. If they were penny pinchers they wouldn't own an iPod.

A while back I bought an Archos Gmini 20GB MP3 player for 169.99. It blows the iPod out of the water:

    - built in CF reader/digital wallet
    - on the fly vari-bit mp3/wav encode via built in mic or SPDIF in
    - modular upgradable decompressors/players (wav, mp3,wma,etc)
    - 8 hour batt life
    - linux support
    - NTSC JPG photo display (zoom/pan) via ext RCA cable(extensible image plugins)
    - and of course, USB1/USB2 attached 20GB HD

I love it so much, I'll never understand why people buy into a 'style' branding or something. Even players that -- really -- blow the ipod out of the water, like the 40-60GB iRiver with its 16 hour battery life and bells and whistles (costing less); people buy the iPod because it 'looks cool'. It's the same people that buy the Jaguar because the lady in the commercial has a british accent, and are oblivious to the fact that it's just a fricking Ford.
