  1. Eric Schmidt YOU LIED on Google Airs Super Bowl Ad · · Score: 1

Before the Superbowl, Eric Schmidt (CEO of Google) tweeted:

"Can't wait to watch the Superbowl tomorrow. Be sure to watch the ads in the 3rd quarter (someone said "Hell has indeed frozen over.")"

It was a nice ad (very touching), but...SERIOUSLY??? I did NOT watch that ad and say "Hell has indeed frozen over"! In fact, thanks to his silly hype, I was left incredibly underwhelmed. Thanks alot, Schmidt.

  6. Climate Change Argument Template on Where the Global Warming Data Is · · Score: 2, Interesting

Paragraph one, "You are a moron!": Slander the person you are replying to (e.g. "wing-nut", "idiot", "retard", "moron", etc. Get creative!). Then call them a "denier" so that it seems like they're opposing something like evolution, which conveniently lumps them into the same category as people who question that too.

Paragraph two, "How dare you question climate change???": Call their argument a "straw-man" and proceed to attack their audacity to question "hard scientific facts". Make some sort of reference to this person's education level, mainly that they are not a climate scientist and as such they have no idea what they're talking about - so they should trust the true experts.

Paragraph three, "CRU Doesn't Matter.": This is the meat of your argument! Although the scientists of the CRU broke all rules known to science and blatantly lied to us all, be sure to ignore this and point out that lots of other researchers have the same findings (even though many of them got their data from the CRU). We need to make it seem like there is a complete and united scientific consensus about climate change.

Paragraph four, "Case closed.": End on a high note! Make sure to say that case is closed, and has been closed for a long time. The debate is over. Everyone but the person you are replying to believes in global warming. This will make them feel like they are just pushing against a closed door.

Congratulations, you have won! If they are stupid enough to come back with real data, repeat this process until they feel so ashamed that they just shut up.

False equivalence. One is a conscious, sentient adult, the other is an animal. Or an inanimate object. You're an idiot.

So if skin colour was a choice you'd be happy to discriminate? Gotcha. You're a hateful, dumb, bigot.

Basically, you're wrong and pretty dumb. Or a troll, I'm not sure which.

This is what I hate about slashdot nowadays. "You don't agree with me? I'll demean you and make you look stupid, rather than providing an adult conversation." I don't care if the person you're replying to *sounded* stupid. You sound just as stupid when you treat others the way you do. Your point of view looks just as ridiculous when you lower yourself to the level of an insulting jerk. Grow up.

I'm *so tired* of people who proclaim freedom for all and are against hate and discrimination, but are okay with slandering and maligning those who do not agree with them. It's like saying "No more hate! But if you don't agree with me it's okay for me to discriminate against you, because you're stupid." What do you call that? I call it more of the same hate just turned around, and it has to stop from *both* sides before we can move on in this country. Good grief.

  16. The concept isn't bad on DRM Take II — Digital Personal Property · · Score: 1

At least, the bare-bones concept isn't bad. This is what Steam does for games, and I like it. I buy a game, I can back it up locally, I can even play most of them offline, though some multiplayer games (like TF2) wouldn't be much fun offline with juts bots. I can play my games on any computer anywhere I go (as long as there's an internet connection through which to download the games locally). I live in Texas, but my in-laws lived in Washington State and when we went up to see them I got onto my Steam account up there, downloaded my games locally, and played them. Also, if I want to let a friend use my account to play my games, I can do that, but I can't be on at the same time - just like if I'd really loaned a physical game to him. One semester in college I was so busy that I didn't play any games at all, and my friend wanted to play Counter Strike, so I let him. When I was ready to play again, I "took it back".

The flip side of this is that publishers feel safe when they publish to Steam because they know the chance of piracy is way down. Treating digital media (songs, games, etc) like physical property, something that can be used by one person at a time, loaned out, and accessed from anywhere, is the way to go, in my opinion.

This is Blizzard we're talking about here. The legendary maker of Starcraft and Diablo II. Everything they do is done incredibly well...to perfection. Don't be so quick to blow this off. I'm guessing that BNet 2.0 will have LAN functionality wrapped inside of it. So it appears like all you have to do to play LAN is connect to BNet first and then after that it's mostly local traffic with the occasional query back to BNet. BNet 2.0 will offer all kinds of new community features like achievements and being able to watch your friends play. Having LAN hooked into BNet 2.0 seems like the best of both worlds for the player while also protecting their software from pirates. If SC2 is anywhere near as good as SC1, I'm definitely willing to take a hit on where I can play multilayer for the sake of throwing Blizzard a bone to help protect their IP.

Maybe they're not doing this to make a buck. If they were doing it to make a buck it strikes me that they wouldn't be so up-front and honest about what the latest firmware update will do to your camera. Perhaps they are just genuinely that uppity and believe that if 3rd party batteries can't meet their quality and safety regulations, then they have to protect their devices from that. It's still not a good reason, but certainly better than screwing over the general population for the sake of making an extra buck.
