  1. Re:Pricing and Usability on Recommend Apple, Lose Your Job? · · Score: 4, Insightful

    1) Pricing: Mac's are significantly more money. And if you thought the Microsoft OS costs were bad, looks at Apple's. OS X launched in 2001, and, if you were a 10.0 buyer, while 10.1 was a free upgrade, 10.2 wasn't, and 10.3 is coming fast! And from the end user perspective, these have all been largely mandatory upgrades -- many apps now won't work unless you are running 10.2, for example.

Now, your other points might be valid (though there are several companies that specialize in mac upgrades), but an unlimited license for OSX Server is what? $1000? Even at 10 times that, it pays for any hardware disparity with commodity PC parts with any significant installation.

How much is a 5000 seat WinXP contract? How many IT to support that, and how much do they make?

The more it takes on the functionality of a regular *nix (and the fewer handrolled apps your company has) the more likely you can use a mac, if that's what you prefer.

    "No"

No one would call you a liar for saying no, likewise, no judge would call mistaken identity perjury.

That in no way is meant to imply the RIAA didn't look like a bunch of dickheads, just that in the absence of any damage, it's not actionable.

The "benevolent dictator" that Linus is with the kernel, and Apple is with the UI are two areas in which we need some coherency.

You want to clamp down on what's allowed where? Put it in the content, not the media or device. You will lose on the device side (right, Mr. V-Chip? Who has programmed their TV to block channels? Easier to say "BEDTIME!" than push 37 buttons and remember passwords for YOUR OWN TV!)

Make the data format reasonable to work with and people will adopt or use it if it doesn't present any perceptible obstacles (no bone thrown to "information wants to be free" people). I don't think many are willing to shell out hundreds or thousands of dollars (sorry all you HDTV early adopters! Maybe next year!) for a device that actually *reduces* functionality.
