I have not heard this before regarding this debate. Do you have any citations regarding? And to the slashdeuschers that might respond to this, I know about Google and Wikipedia. You seem pretty knowledgeable about the topic, could you direct us/me to any sources that would be a good read? Thank you for the good post.
I do not know enough physics to get this right, but oxygen is required for combustion. The early earth didn't have much oxygen in it's atmosphere. Do things traveling through a non-oxygenated atmosphere combust, or get superheated, or what?
I am conflicted in thought about this. My initial reaction is outrage. My second thought after reading the article is that I have done some nefarious things over the tubes. My third thought is that I dont think anybody really cares that I torrented some Justified episodes and streamed the first season of Game of Thrones. My fourth thought is that my IP is completly tied to the same IP I used in the late 90's when I discovered the nefarious side of the internet as a teenager. I sort of 'came to age' as the internet went from a mostly text environment to an environment where pictures and applications became viable. Video shortly after, and the bandwith to enable p2p on a massive scale. My fifth thought is about what is discussed in data analysis in the article. I think the NSA is reacting to the relatively recent abilities to utilize online data made mainstream by the likes of Google, then Facebook, then Twitter. The thing that scares me most is not the gov'ment keeping up to date with technology, but the lack of people fighting the use of technology by the gov'ment to exlude siezure from tech stuff. I wrote this post on a HP mini that had a failed hard drive, installed a linux distro on a 500 GB usb HD, and have been running it for about 6 Mo.s. I tried xubuntu, mint, debian, and ubuntu. Currently I'm xubuntu, and working fine. I can't take my netbook on a plane, however, because I have a external USB HD taped into the port so it won't fall out, and a HD case taped to the back of the screen so it won't fall off the case. I'm pretty sure if I tried to fly with that, it would be ID'd as something nefarious, examined, and trying to explain it to a TSA guy would get me nowhere. So I don't even try. I feel upset that I have lost so much control over my personal ability to know what I am doing. Skoal Bubbu Watson.
This brings up an interesting question as to whether the advantages of storing massive amounts of personal data on public facing servers (or any server at all, res cent reports have me convinced that if anybody including governments, foreign hackers, or anyone else that wants the data bad enough will be able to find a way to get it) creates large enough benefits to balance the damages caused by breaches like this.
10,000 years ago, where I live was covered by thousands of feet of ice. Yes, the climate has changed in the past, and yes, it was dramatic. When I said "may dramatically change", I was refering to the possibility that change over one or several decades may transform the weather and agricultual systems that have been in place for several generations.
I wish coversation around this topic would shift from debate about whether or not the climate is changing and may in fact change dramatically over the course of several decades, and whether or not humans activities have an impact on the climate to a productive conversation about how to best react to changing climate and use it productively. It is obvious to me that where I live (Minnesota), the mean temperatures are rising and the growing seasons are getting longer. Shit, I had my vegetable seeds sprouting and even had them outdoors some days, early in March, in Minnesota! I am also growing a dwarf bananna tree that has made it through two winters here. I guess my point is, I think it would be great if people would quit arguing about empirical facts (such as there is more CO2 in the atmosphere than ever before during modern human civilization); and start wondering about how to react to the changes that might be brought about in this altered environment.
Get yer shit together, 'America Fuck Yea!' We should be fighting this, not idly standing by with big screen TV's, professional college athletes, and a government that is fastly degrarding into a corporation. If you have a lot of money, hang on and profit. If you don't, learn how to grow your own food and hang on and live. Public education=government. Biggest employer=government. Decisions about your own health=government. Walking down your sidewalk? Google has the pictures, and who can access that? Government. I have never done anything illegal in my life, nor plan on it, yet this shit still scares me. I sense a revolution coming. Banking system. Federal Reserve. The Dollar. NAFTA. I could go on and on, but you get the point that it is bullshit. The denoument is DHS and TSA. They have yet to catch a 'terrorist', yet they recieve tens and hundreds of million dollars in funding. Who authorizes that? Apparently not me, even though I pay for it and have not voted for a republican or democrat since I was 18 in 2000. I call bullshit.
Everywhere I look, I could decide that something that someone else has said, posted (tacked a flyer to a wall, or made a comment on the interweb) offends me. Some things I read in my local newspaper are offensive to me. A lot of things I read in comment sections are offensive. But I decided a long time ago to not feel offended by people remotely related to me. A neighbor who has a brother who lives five hundred miles away might not like me; I have found that being a decent person and defending my beliefs have encouraed my neighbors to do the same. This is an issue that confronts 'global society'. I would encourage everybody that has a facebook account to go talk to the people who live around you and learn something. Also, for those that say social networking is at tool for revolution, i agree. It most certainly is and if you are using facebook, twitter, or any other version to talk about social revolution, I am on your side. If you are tweeting about a club or snookie, you already lost any respect I might have, The internet is a tool well utilized by several, by most, it is a hammer being swung at a thumb tack.
As an American from the midwest who travels a lot, this is an even bigger encitement for me to travel less by plane. The biggest issue for me is convincing my employer to give me four days to drive to Utah and back instead of flying out on a Friday night and flying back on Sunday. If I can leave on Thrursday afternoon, conslidate meetings, leave Sunday morning, and return Monday afternoon, I might be able to convince them. The biggest issue from my perspective is that I drive my own car, I will not be responsible for any delays, and I now believe that I am in more control than the TSA over any hard information that I am bringing to my clients. I can't wait for the mandatory traffic stops while crossing state lines. I witnessed a smaller version of the same the other day, while driving north from Central Ave. in MPLS. When I got to Columbia Heights, there was a small cadre of police who appeared to be doing random stops and car checks on Central. I served my guy about ten blocks north, and then had to go back. I was prepared to call my lawyer, even though I had nothing close to illegal in my car. I drove past the checkpoint and was not pulled over. I'm suprised that the local cops didn't have my license plate because I have recently posted on slashdot and pull me over. F ying sucks, now taking a train or driving a car might suck just as much. Vote for the least worst option no longer works. Put your shit together and vote for some real people in the next election.
I run a small business in which I provide legal services for small law firms, including process service, depositions (in my state, as a notary I am an officer of the court and may swear people in and record depositions with a/v equipment), and transcriptions. My business works because in many cases, I can offer said services cheaper than national companies. Sometimes, I will discount or even provide for free service for a new client. I do, however, invoice them for the service and write it down as paid. I discuss their finances before hand, let them know that they will recieve a non-collectable paid out invoice, and I do not account for it in my business income/taxes/whatever. I have garnered several new clients by showing them what I do, and after that they happily pay for my services. I guess the point is, if you are going to do something for free and expect to be paid for it later on, do it on your own terms. No sympathy for folks who sign a contract to do free work and then sue later for damages. Although, that helps me in the long run because it gives lawers more bullshit to take to court, and I get paid when they do that. Keep suing everybody, America.
Would it really be that hard to hit ctrl-t and type software defined radio? If you are that lazy, in about two mouse clicks more than it would take to hit the link to copy, then paste and search. Sometimes I do not wonder how much influence Snooki has on the 'give me everything now' culture.
Governmen't has failed and has even backdoor-supported a lot of companies on these issues. I have decided to start voting with my wallet. Call me a luddite or whatever, but last year after my identity was stolen, I deleted my facebook account and anonymized my other accounts as best I could. I moved my personal banking to a credit union; I miss having access to a free atm at Super America, but with a little planning I get cash at the union before I need it. I have almost never been in an 'emergency' where I needed cash immediately, if this occurs I will suck it up and pay the atm fee. I sure miss some things, when I was in school I remember running out to get GTA San Andreas with three friends on the release date, but I haven't bought a console since I got my PS2 in 2002. In fact, Humble Bundle and some other indie's have served my gaming needs since I graduated in 2009. (Also, playing console and LAN games at friends houses. I am a cook, so I usually supply delicious treats and my friends and their wives pretty much let me get my fix). Also won't buy television services, I either go to a bar or friends houses. If all of these companies experience a large drop in revenue, they may change their tune pretty quick. Same goes for government.
The article doesn't discuss how this will be implemented. Are they taking overhead shots of Fukushima to see where there is still leakage? I am not a radiation expert, but I don't understand how this would be more effective than a geiger counter. If anybody has any insight I would gladly read a response or any links to some more information.
I will be the first to admit that I don't know dick about Chinese internet availability. I have one high school buddy who has been teaching and living in China for 4~5 years, and married a Chinese girl. As far as I can tell from his experience, told to me: the censorship issue is manifest mostly in that western entertainment media are the most contained. Social and internet access to most websites are okay, but when he came to visit I explained the concept of Justified to him. He had not seen the show, nor is he a Raylon type guy. He would appreciate it, but the show is censored in China.
I am not sure if I even think that is a problem, seeing as I have never been there. A lot of slashdotters comment on places they have never been. If you have been to China, and can speak to the "great firewall" from personal experience, let me know. I and my pals would appreciate some input from english speakers (I can do german, and some very limited french and spanish, and two phrases of Japanese)
Gao ming tien da hen gao.

I am astounded by the amount of rhetoric and vitriol that surrounds astronomical discoveries. Whether or not they are correct, the truth boils down to: we don't have shit for current time observations of anything in the universe. I truly believe that we are on the right path, and models fit observation, but why get so skeptical about everything? By the time we all die, the universe will basically be in the same state. Let's enjoy the limits of our observation, explore and expand them, and then maybe one of our lineage will be able to explore it.

We are not all Budweiser schills. http://mnbeer.com/.
...and after the cops rubbed her pages with a pencil, they discovered 26 pages of men with large erections.
With this much brainpower behind the project, I can't wait to see how cool this crow-bar that they are manufacturing is!!!!

If you are doing professional work that is being undercut by people doing it for free, you are in the wrong business. The story of entitlement.
Is your name Sarah, and do you want to meet up sometime? I like your style.
