I remember this because Rober Thompson is a media whore of the first order and anytime he pops up, I know the program using him was put together with a minimum of effort.

If you pay attention, you will see Thompson show up with eerie frequency any time a peice about the current culture is done. A quick Google news search for "robert Thompson" and Syracuse (the university at which he is employed) turns up 50 articles with quotes from this guy.

  4. some thoughts... on Gender Inequality In Everquest · · Score: 1

I've been thinging about this since this article was originally posted. the common sence explanation holds true, most EQ players are men, so male characters are more in demand.
However, on further contemplation, there are a couple of other things going on here. Looking at the original article reveals that only about 20% of teh characters for sale are female, thus that should make up for the difference in demand. But if this makes up for the differnece in demand, we need to think of other reasons why female characters sell for less.
Some possibilities might lie in looking at the whole process of buying and selling a character in teh first place. It seems to me that the process of leveling up a character just to sell it seems something a bored teenaged boy would be likely to do, rather than a)teenaged girls or b)older people of either gender.
Then there is the question of who is buying these characters? beyond the resaonsable assumption that most of them are male, what kind of men are they? It seems that someone who would buy a premade character is looking for a sort of status item, a vanity character so to speak. Sounds like some mid-30's former buisness major to me.
Anyway, it seems that this fact that female characters sell for less than male has more to it than it would first appear, and it would be neat to seem a bit more research done on the buyers and sellers themselves, rather than just what they buy (of course our possessions speak volumes about our identity, but that is another post...).

Hey moron, I just watched you put a ton of money in that machine and you're excited about $250? Wow, you're only down $300 now!
The thing about casinos is that people think, oh maybe I'll win the nix spin/hand whatever, so they keep playing. Then when they do win, suddenly they thing they're "on a roll" and poof their goes the money they just won plus some more.
You want to know what is even more amazing? At least half of the people who work there are just as adicted to gambling as teh customers. You would not beleive how many of my fellow emploees spend their days off at the casino down the road. See, a lot of them were former customers of the casino i work at, lost a bunch of money and were forced to get a job, so they got one at the casino. One would think that this would cure them of their addiction, but I suppose it is like an alcoholic working at a bar.

Your argument is pretty much the same one that Dave Grossman uses to assert that videogames make people killers. Well, the fact that the marines use videogames isn't necessarilly proof that videogames cause x, y, or z. The marines also make people march and make their beds. So are we to assume that marching and making beds makes one a better killer? Of course not, these activities have other purposes, like discipline and such. So maybe the marines use of videogmaes has other purposes as well and is not simply about desensitizing.
