now i'm not a lawyer, don't pretend to be, but it would seem that this argument would also make things like shareware and freeware illegal as well not just open source, right? any software (or song or whatever) where the creator says, "make copies of this for your friends and give them away." would be illegal? so then this interpretation of copyright law has much broader implications than open source.
deus ex was the unreal engine. i think system shock 1 and 2 was proprietary. There was also strife way back in the day which used the doom engine.

if my fiancee doesn't understand why i won't buy a dimond then maybe she isn't worth being my fiancee.
Atari didn't have a licencing program or any lock-out chips like nintendo, therefore anyone coupld make atari games without asking permission. atari did not make custer's revenge. i'm sure that bushnell was talking about games the he or his companies made, not games that were made for his company's hardware.
It seems that the general concensus is flavour is better than flavor. So an American attempt at standardization and simpllification is bad, but a European attempt like the metric system kicks ass, right? Dear kettle, you are black. sincerely, the pot
Honestly though, from someone who was forced to take a course on the history of English, its all pretty my arbitrary and made up.
Ok, I've asked this before but not really gotten any answer. Everytime I've had to call tech support there inevitably comes a time when when the tech support person says, ok turn off the computer and wait ten seconds (or some other ammount of time) before you turn it back on. Now whenever I've had problems, I've never found a reason to do this. I've never seen any web site recommend doing this. Is this, as I suspect, tech support voodoo, or is there any real reason why one should have to do this?
So Devine goes to microsoft on the same day it is revealed that microsoft had bid on 3do's assets? Conincidnece? I think not. Devine is a closet fan of the army men series!!!!
well, that was... not as good as his last film. It was technically well made, but seemed not to have much focus. Still it was interesting, just not entertaining for me.
I just moved to a town that has G4 and it is horrible. beyond words bad. x-play on techtv is a million times better than anything i have seen on G4 and I don't like x-play all that much.
I know that we're all geeks here and such, but it would have been helpfull if someone would have mentioned that this was Dungeons and Dragons we were talking about. It took me a second to figure that out.
maxx payne the wrestler was trying to put out a behind the scenes documentary a couple of years ago. Since wrestling has often assumed the gimmics of characters originated in other mediums (Memphis wrestling at one point had a Freddy and Jason rip offs for example. A local wrestling outfit I once saw had some masked guys who wore basketball jerseys and called themselves Jordan and O'Neal). So he is probably trying to make sure that people know that he was first.
Call me crazy, but it seems a lot better to adopt a child than go to all of this trouble. In fact it seems downright selfish that one would rather spend tons of money rather than adopt a child that already exists. It seems so selfish that I might go so far as to argue that perhaps this desire that the child must be mine mine mine might go so far as to make people bad parents due to the fact that they are so slefish thinking of thier own needs and wants and are unable to love a child just becuse it doe snot have their DNA. Now before I'm modded as a troll. Tell me, why isn't it selfish? Why is the idea of adoption so repellant that one would rather go through such effort to create a child?
As I understand it, generally it is because a subsidiary of a company in another country is basically a seperate company. Nintendo of America has their own production schedual and own profit margins and whatnot. If Nintendo of Japan released a game that wasn't region locked, it would hurt Nintendo of America's bottom line.
they'll tie it in the same way they tied in the partiot act when they said the governemnt needed more surviellance powers even though the governemnt already had their eyes on at least some of the hijackers before 911. THey will use fear and paranoia and money.
Well, g3 would be nice. What would be even nicer is if i could get any kind of cell phone access at my house. Not every area is even covered by existing mobile phone technology, let alone new technology.
unfortunately all of the screen shots that i've seen indicate that every sim will still have the same body shape. no overweight sims or short or tall sims. no left handed sims. i think it would be really interesting to have a sim with a weight problem that you had to try to control (be it obesity or something like anorexia). this is too bad beause it could really open up the play possibilities.
This question is raised nearly every time this issue comes up. My answer why it is bad for laws like this is that there are no laws against selling violent movies to children There are no laws against selling music with violent lyrics to children There are no laws against selling violent magazines to children There are no laws against selling violent books to children There are no laws against selling tickets to violent sporting events to children There are no laws against children participation in violent sporting events So what makes vidoegames so special? That is the problem with these laws.
Sure, if you tell all the kids who flunked out because of drinking, watching tv (I almost failed a class becaue of reruns of the wonder years), their signifigant other breaking up with them, drugs, depression, being in a band, getting pregnant, and any of the hundreds of other reasons why people flunk out of school. I play more games than any of my friends and I am starting my phd in the fall. None of my firends from high school even made it through their undergrad.
Can anyone actually verify the kind of griefing that goes on in the sims online? I read the original article about it, but i read from some that the things they were saying in the article weren't possible. Has anyone actually experienced any of this alleged sims online griefing first hand, or is this a case of the media manufacturing a story?

ooops didn't see the part where the poster said it was a "chick" that was working on the game.
who said that the poster is a)male or b)heterosexual?

They missed an opportunity here. they could have made a big ocmic book style event out of this "Worlds are collapsing!" kind of thing

My answer why it is bad for laws like this is that
there are no laws against selling violent movies to children
There are no laws against selling music with violent lyrics to children
There are no laws against selling violent magazines to children
There are no laws against selling violent books to children
There are no laws against selling tickets to violent sporting events to children
There are no laws against children participation in violent sporting events
So what makes vidoegames so special?
That is the problem with these laws.
counter-examples: oaklahoma, 9-11, pretty much every day in the middle east. and let's not forget that the columbine killers also had planted a bomb
