  1. Almost there on What Is Holding Back the Paperless Office? · · Score: 0

My office has been almost, about 99%, paperless for 20 years. The paper I have is incoming things. For the last decade or so I've been scanning in those incoming docs which has further reduced my paper. Outgoing PDFs help too. It is doable.

Realize that paper is not made from prime wood. It's the junk. We do sustainable forestry on our family farm. The good stuff goes to veneer, cabinetry, lumber and such. Next is firewood. Wood pulp for making paper is the sweepings but there is a lot of that in order to thin the crops of trees to produce high grade wood. Wood is a very long term farm crop. What we tend now we'll harvest in 30 to 50 years.

    Keep recycling those electrons.

Actually, I will buy not one, not two, but probably three or maybe even more. The iPad is exactly what I've been needing for 20 years. Great device specs and I'm sure Apple will live up to the hype. I'm also sure that the OS issue will be resolved in time. MacOSX will be on the iPad and Apps will run on the MacOSX (e.g., my laptop). Life just gets better.

If the activity brought in some real benefit I could see that as being useful.
Unfortunately these games are wasting three to five hours a day of a lot of people's lives.
The farmville, farmtown and the like are particularly weird.
In a fraction of the amount of time that people are wasting on those fake farming games they could raise enough food for their family for a year.
    Very strange.
What it shows to me is that people have too much money and too much time on their hands.

I'm losing respect for Obama, fast. I voted for him. The alternative was horrid. I didn't really feel like I had a choice. I hoped he would accomplish good things. It has been over a year and not only has he gotten nothing done but he has gone back on campaign promises. Once again we have a loser for a President. How many administrations do we have to put up with this before we've been punished enough here in Heck?

Lets have someone like Dean or Perot, with vision and just a tinge of insanity. It would make things more interesting.

I'm not surprised. I have had to call MS tech support. As we wait for the computer to work I ask them what they use at HOME. Many of the Microsoft Windows technicians use Macintosh computers at home and confide that they only work on MS for the money. Imagine that. For the money they sell their souls!?! :) Oops, and there I was getting support for a MS product. I plead insanity.

Agreed - I miss when things were simpler but I also enjoy the more powerful systems we have today. Most of all, I wish that the modern systems were backward compatible so that we could still run old software. I would like to see standard emulators for the Exidy, MacClassic, etc. Apple, for example, really should continue supporting the old OSs. There is a tremendous amount of old and very good software, especially in kids educational packages, that ran on the older computers but won't work in MacOSX. Sadly nobody is bringing out new versions. Even the iPod has enough computing power to emulate these old packages with ease.

"do you really want to" [buy an iPad]

Yes! Two in fact. It isn't just the software, it is the hardware too and the integration of the two. It will be a long time before anyone approaches the elegance and power of the iPad. By then Apple will also be miles ahead of that.

Besides, if you detest DRM as much as I do, which is a lot, then read old books. There are hundreds of thousands, millions(?), out there out of copyright. Humans have a long literary history. Skip the recent stuff.

Actually, your early farmer theory is all wrong too. I farm much like early farmers and life is not as hard as you imagine. I also know all about hunting-gathering and can do it but would much rather farm. Farming is much easier and very useful for getting through the winters.

Additionally, city folk of today are very confused about basic life. We really do both hunting, gathering and farming. It isn't a one or the other situation. That is an illusion from your modern office cubicle world.

As to high population density, you're thinking urban. There's a lot of country side out there without many people that you city folk don't seem to be aware of. Good.
