The new Update Agent provided with Microsoft Win2K contains a service, msnsd, which periodically polls MS Network for updates. This daemon leaks file descriptors. On a default installation, all available file descriptors will be used by rhnsd in approximately three weeks, making the system unusable." The MS folks have also provided a fix, though -- updated packages for those who want to use their update network, and the two-line method of disabling per machine for those who don't. After all, everyone wants uptime > 3 weeks, eh? And you don't need to wait for a "service pack," either.
Boy I bet the people here would be howling about not only MS screwing up again, but also how evil it is that MS knows what programs you have on your computer when they're polled by the "MS Network".
Mojo seems like a cool idea, and using Mojo seems like an excellent way to force people to share. But I was wondering why I should use Mojo Nation when I can use programs like Scour or Napster which are free. I could be a leech and not share anything there. What would Mojo Nation offer to a leech to get him to stop leeching?
I used to get all those annoying phone calls to switch long distance. Finally I told ATT that I worked for Sprint, and well, nothing ATT could offer me would beat my employee deal. The caller chuckled and said he'd make a note of it. I haven't been called by ATT since then.
I did the same thing when Sprint, telling them I worked for ATT.
This seems to be the only thing I ever got to work.
Well, I looked at this site. And this Gibson story seems really boring. I mean, I know he's a dry writer and all that, but he's gone downhill since Neuromancer. This story was densely written, lacked plot development, and the character progression was minimal. Personally, I think he's trying to capture the "hard sci-fi" that Neal Stephenson does so well. Hopefully Gibson will return to more familiar ground and produce a better story next time.
Is DC still releasing these, or have they introduced all that they're going to? I could actually go down to Radio Shack, but I felt I should give some/.'ers a chance to earn some karma!:)
Nowhere in this article did this ex-NSA agent provide an example of the NSA collaborating with a corporation. Basically all this article consists of is the claim of an old NSA agent. Really, it sounds like little more than he's repeating tales and rumors he's heard since his retirement. Unless this guy provide some reasonable proof that this is going on, I'm afraid its nothing more than conspiracy theory, and not a well-put-together one at that.
See, the reason that Keanu was great in the Matrix was because he was well directed, and brought an aura of sexiness to a geeky pasttime. The Waschowski(sp?) Brothers were wise enough to study the Sylvester Stallone School of Directing: Don't let him talk!
Both Keanu and Stallone are good actors, when they keep their mouths shut.
Starwars has pretty much been played out. Given the horrible waste of screentime that was Episode One, I have no desire to see Episode Two anytime soon.
Not to rehash any "Starwars sucks" discussions, but I think that those of us who grew up watching Starwars are a little more mature, and we expect more mature things from a film.
To this end, IMHO I believe the Matrix trilogy will be the new Star Wars. At least it will be for me.
Mojo Nation *does* look cool, but since they don't have a privacy policy, I'm loathe to provide my personal details. Let me know when the privacy policy is implemented, and I'll give Mojo Nation some consideration.
To solve this, all media must be put on pay-per-usage streaming servers, and media makers must convince users to have fast internet connections and small hard drives while protecting their customers' privacy and convincing those customers that they are safe.
You know, the last time I saw something this gay, it was two topless men sharing a Vespa scooter in the Castro.

I've gone back and forth on this issue for some time, and I finally came to the conclusion that voting for a minor party candidate is a waste of a vote...but only if you were going to vote Democrat or Republican in the first place.
Lets use Gore and Nader as an example (although this applies equally as well to Bush and Buchanan.) If you don't want to see Bush elected, and you vote for Nadar, you're actually helping Bush. So its counterproductive.
This article brings up something that I've pointed out to people in the past. A lot of people on slashdot bitch and moan about the way Internet law is being handled. But what have most of us done?
I think very few of us (and this certainly includes myself) have done anything. I know I haven't even done something as simple as writing a letter to my congressman, or sending a donation to EFF.org
I see a lot of posts complaining about satellite modems and poor pings times in Quake, and how its inferior to cable and DSL. These posters are missing the goal of satellite modems. The goal of them is not to compete with other broadband connections; rather, its to supply high speed net access to places that DSL and cable do not exist.
Someone out in Podunk, Kansas will be thrilled to have a satellite connection after suffering thru sub-28.8 speeds for years. As for latency, yes its a factor. However, for your average home user playing games isn't a high priority. It'll be used mostly to surf the web and download files. Thus, it seems like latency isn't going to be that big of an issue to most people.
After i asked, the teacher had to explain what vi, g++ and linux was to the class. Seems a lot more people are coming into computers for money and not the love of the game.
You thus immediately marked yourself as a nerd and teacher's pet to the rest of the class!:)
I'm curious if anyone has any comments as to how this will affect the appeal of Judge Kaplan's ruling. While, IANAL, it seems to me that this will bolster the case of 2600. Would 2600 be able to say to the appeals court, "They're suing us for something they are doing themselves! They don't want us to link to the DeCSS program, then they turn around and do it themselves. If its as bad and harmful as they would like us to believe, why would they link to it?"
On the other hand, this is more than likely the questionable judgement of some mid-level HTML coder working deep within the Time-Warner machine. As the link seems to be gone, I think its safe to deduce that someone at CNN reads Slashdot!:)
Back at the University of Oregon, I had a friend who purchased an expensive PowerBook. Rather than chain it to whatever desk he happened to be at, my friend came upon another solution.
He created a background image with a large photo of himself and the text: "If the person using this laptop doesn't look like this, its been stolen!" He also put his phone number and "Reward Offered" in it.
I suspect that most of the posts here will be remembering Sir Guiness for his role in Star Wars. To me, however, I will always remember him as the Colonel who almost neurotically refused to yield to the Japanese in Bridge on the River Kwai. As an aside, I saw that movie last year and I can't believe its over forty years old.
I'm seeing a disturbing trend in America lately, and that is the amount of ill will, rancor, and all-out hatred that is being directed at successful and profitable corporations.
A good solid attempt at a troll. Pay attention, kids, this is how it should be done.

I got a +b for changing my nick from HotGrits to CMDR_TACO_SMELLS_LIKE_FEET. Unfair, I say! Unfair!

OMFG! I stared at the sun for five minutes to see the spots! Oh! My eyes burn! I can't see anything! Aiyeeee!
Now I can play Haunted House while waiting for the bus!

Was it just me, or did anyone else think the name Tish Fackler sounds like a joke name? Like Jim Shoe, or Hugh G. Rection?

Just the way I see it.

Anyone have any other suggestions?

This is the wheel of karma coming back to kick Apple in the ass for suing eMachines for being too much like the iMac.
I'd really appreciate it if my sysadmin would get his lazy angry ass in here and fix my box.
