Here is an example where the source code has led to a "hack"

If I remember the details correctly, they looked at the TCP stack for the linux kernel and found a section that was essentially labeled "This code is to catch errors. This code should never run", or something like that. They figured out how to make that code run (along with some other magic), and the rest is history.

The source code allowed the attacker to identify the issue, as well as find out how to execute it. When you are writing a program with millions of lines of code, there WILL be an error/hole somewhere. Both open source and closed source have holes, but open source provides you with the source code to explore as well.

  18. Re:Had a glass of water at Lake Tahoe CA? on Urine Passes NASA Taste Test · · Score: 1

Here is a neat link that explains differences:

When the water freezes, most of these impurities are not actually included in the ice crystals, but they usually do get stuck somewhere in little pockets in the ice cubes. That's why, with our very sensitive sense of taste, we can tell the diference between different types of ice cubes, the same as you can taste the diference between water from different sources. These small differences between tap water and distilled water may not produce any obvious visible difference in ice cubes, however. A less subtle difference might arise from the fact that many taps "aerate" the water by passing it through a fine mesh with an air intake. Tap water out of most taps has quite a bit of air dissolved in it. If you leave a glass of tap water out for a while you may notice tiny air bubbles forming on the side. If you freeze the water quickly, the ice will form before the air has a chance to bubble out. The bubbles will form anyway inside of the ice cubes because the dissolved air does not fit into the ice crystal lattice. So if you look at ice cubes made from tap water compared with distilled water, you might find that the tap water ones are not as clear and transparent as the distilled water ones because of all the air bubbles inside. But this isn't a fixed property of tap water or distilled water, just in their handling (you can dissolve air in the distilled water too!).

I heard/saw somewhere that if you use new plastic ice cube trays and distilled water, and do things just right, you can get a spike to form on the ice. Ahh, here it is.

  22. VNC/RDC/NetOP on Low-Bandwidth, Truly Remote Management? · · Score: 4, Informative

We use VNC and NetOp with our satellite sites. It works decent. It is slow (maybe 2 minutes) to authenticate with AD when you initially log on (if you log in locally, it is faster), but once you are authenticated, things work pretty good. There is definate latency between when you click the mouse and action happens, but it is definately usable.

As for the iridum setup, you might want to check those speeds again. When we looked into it, they were only able to offer a 2400 baud serial connection over the Iridium system. That is REALLY slow, and with high latency. We decided against going with the backup.

I'm not sure where you are planning on deploying these setups, but maybe a cellular modem would fit your needs more. They are fast, low latency, and comparable in price. The only hitch with them is that there is no SLA; just best effort. If you are out of coverage area, try to hook up a high gain antenna to the cell modem and try again.

I would just use remote desktop tools to manage your servers. VNC especially works quite well with low bandwidth, high latency connections.

One thing to let you know though. Make sure that you have someone that can go to the site and has access to the network equipment. We have almost 20 sites like this, and about 2 go down a month. The sat-modems or sat-controllers sometimes need to be rebooted, and having someone near the site to do that can save you guys A LOT of money. When we have to send out a tech, it costs around $2,000.00 due to driving charges.
