As a trans person it feels like my government is trying to erase me. I appreciate these companies doing this and making me feel safer. Also good god these comments, is *everyone* on slashdot anti-trans? Do you know any trans people in person?
This thread is great, the topography and railroads influencing the grid orientations hadn't occurred to me. I did hear that in Boston, the cow paths became sidewalks and then streets, so Boston was perhaps designed by cows.
I think the sun is also a factor. Many streets line up with the summer solstice sunset:
https://sztanko.github.io/sols...
I was saddened to realize that Los Angeles's downtown never lines up with the solstice, but many others do, like in boyle heights. Last solstice I went out and watched one. https://www.instagram.com/p/Bk...
FWIW, I have verizon unlimited and constantly go over 22 GB and don't think I've ever been throttled. I think it depends on how clogged the network is, 22GB is guaranteed.
I'm not arguing against the spirit of these laws, but it's easy to break them without being nefarious. Including google analytics on a site, common practice in the web industry, with the track demographic data checkbox checked is enough to break these laws.
I did something similar with a symlink to an SSH mounted server.
rm -rf server/ instead of rm -rf server
Then I learned 'unlink' is a better option

Exactly, Apple requires developers to include a splash screen while the app is loading.
Resuming apps is another thing, perhaps what the author meant (for iOS at least) is how quickly they can resume from a suspended state, but every iOS app has a splash screen.
I don't know if this is legit, but when I was hired and saw that clause, I simply crossed it out before signing it. It seemed ridiculous to me that they would own an iPhone app I wrote on the weekend that had nothing to do with the company. HR was ok with me crossing it out.
"Mention to someone that you make apps and their interest will pick up instantly."...Because they have a "million dollar app idea" and they want you to design, program, test, and release it for them, and then they'll give you a cut.
This is hurting my brain a little. How do we know a third storm is coming when it's traveling at the speed of light toward us? Don't we detect storms by seeing them from earth, when the EM radiation has already traveled here? I'm guessing maybe we have sensors closer to it? Also doesn't it only take 8 minutes for sunlight to hit the earth?
Most people's backups are not encrypted. I just tried the app and it worked flawlessly from my my backups. You do not need to jailbreak to run the app.
Exactly. How is it undetectable if an antivirus detects it? And the guy's rationale for it not being a false positive is "it's never failed me before"?
As many users below have pointed out, the story is false:

It was a false positive with a language pack that came with windows.
I taught myself how to sing this to 200 digits in high school, which impressed no one.:)
He stops right before the first 0, which I count as a rest when I sing it.
I used this as an audition song for an a cappella group in college, and not surprisingly didn't get in. Switching up my repertoire to something less nerdy got me into another group.

I don't think it was so much these companies as it was capitalism that incentivized gaming the technology.
Are they going to enable pilots to disable the MCAS from nose diving the plane by pulling up on the yoke too?

Couldn't browsers detect and warn you if you're using a self-signed root CA certificate?
I'm super unhappy about this, I use google reader every day and Google Currents is no alternative. Which alternatives do people like?
Exactly, I didn't realize that typing the command
ifconfig en1 ether 00:e2:e3:e4:e5:e6
was illegal.
I was pretty disappointed that Slashdot wouldn't find the equation for this. I ended up finding it on reddit: http://www.reddit.com/r/worldnews/comments/u7551/teen_solves_newtons_300yearold_riddle_an/c4sxd91

I feel like calling the united states' bluff on how many citizens it's willing to imprison, despite overcrowding, is a bad idea.

This is a good idea, but it doesn't protect the customer from a skimmer skimming the card and a video camera recording their pin.

Has anyone figured out where the file is on the phone? They show where it's stored in your backups but I would like to find it on my jailbroken phone.

I had the same problem with not being able to blog about the command rm -rf /. Thanks, mod_security.

Other reactors such as the AP1000 which are planned on being built in China and the US have passive cooling. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AP1000#Passive_Core_Cooling_System
