But then again, very few plumbers have to deal with users who consistently download BonziBuddy, blindly click on suspicious email attachments and use their cd trays as cupholders."
Pretty sad that there's a higher percentage of people that are happy fixing toilets clogged with shit then the perecentage of people supporting computer users....
It really is not set up for a GUI, and you will do a ton of work getting it there. It will run Linux-compatible binaries provided you have the right libraries.
Oh come now... I've installed FreeBSD on a few machines ranging from a Dell pII 400 to a Frankenputer(tm) I built from parts lying around the house. I've never had any issues getting X running with Gnome, KDE, Windowmaker, or anything else. I choose the options right in the installer and it just works for me.
From there the GUI runs just like it does in Linux.
About a month ago, i needed to rebuild my wife's win2k laptop. I thought about what she uses it for (web, mail, IM), and said screw it and put Fedora on there, as an experiment.
So far, she's perfectly happy with it. Her apps are suitable (Mozilla, Evolution, GAIM), she likes the default Gnome games:) and the machine doesn't crash on her.
I had to explain that she didn't need to reboot the machine when Evolution popped up an error message (because the mail server was down), which was a foreign concept to her, but she's learning!:)
Oh good, so basically the Nigerians can send out a nice, professional email blast (like they've been doing). The suckers^H^H^H^H^H^H^Hinterested parties place their money into the escrow account. The Nigerians mark it as spam, keep the escrow money, lather-rinse-repeat!
About two years ago, I got extremly pissed off with Cox Digital Cable (Every day for an hour or so, all the premium movie channels would go black; they kept sending techs, no one could find a problem)
I switched to DirecTV and haven't looked back since. Now, granted I'm in Phoenix so weather isn't exactly a factor here. But, even with the monsoons in the summer, i've only lost picture about 1 or 2 times, and that was only for a short duration.
When I saw that Best Buy was selling a DirecTV receiver/Tivo unit for $99, I jumped on it. We had a Tivo already but this was one unit, smaller, bigger drive, two inputs, and dolby built it.
I couldn't be any happier, and i'm glad i went this route.
I concur with this. I highly recommend Code Complete for developers of all experience levels. It provides a nice basis for best practices, with explanations as to why the recommendations are made etc. Very useful information in there! I've had countless coworkers and developer acquaintances read it.
I chose Java because I was "head over heels" in love with it. I adored the concept of a cross-platform C-like language with garbage collection. We were hoping to build our Java expertise and make this exciting new technology our specialty
Yeah, agree to a project for a big company, using a technology you aren't yet an expert in. Good call.
Well I graduated high school in 1987 so you young whipper-snappers quit yer damn "old" comments and get the hell of my net socket before i call the cops.
It has to be the case. The article also states that you can not use PHP in the name of a product, which wuold mean a lot of free products (IE phpMyAdmin) would need to change their names, if the rule in fact applied to products that use PHP as the language.

and since the "fabric" has lots of holes in it, they keep you cooler than a standard chair does.
:)
They also dissipate farts quite nicely! What fun are they if you can't share them with your coworkers ?
One that I just finished that I absolutely loved was [no, there isn't a referral id in this url] Altered Carbon by Richard Morgon
Was really enjoyable!

Yeah, clicking Exit really hard just doesn't quite have the same effect :)

If you're wearing an old shirt, do you need to worry about Token Ring around the collar?
Spirit sent 73 megabits at a rate of 128 kilobits per second.
:)
Pretty damn scary that that's faster then most pr0n download's via Kazza...
If so, why is this legal cutoff at 60, and not say, 50? Or 70?
:)
Maybe SCO is claiming ownership rights to 50 and doesn't want anyone else to pollute their case by specifiying it?
1 = super computer
1100 = supercomputer
See, with that many more computers you DO run out of space
*rim shot*
Thanks folks, we're here all week. Try the veal; it's delicious. And please, don't forget to tip your waitress.
Ah, hadn't seen that! Cool.
Subversion still seems to have a few serious issues including rename is not atomic
Of course, subversion isn't even at beta yet. They're making very nice progress with it though, and it will rock when it's finally ready.

Um, no DON'T get 5-CURRENT. That will likely have changes in it that will bork your system. That's for development and developers, not for end users
The scary thing is, remember going "Dragon's Lair costs 50 cents to play? SCREW THAT!"
Fox Trot did a great sunday strip a few weeks ago where Jason was watching "Queer Eye for the Database Guy" on TV
There's a copy of it here at techtv.com
So by that logic if without Stanley tools my house couldn't have been built does that mean it should be named Stanley/My House? No..
No no, HERE is a sexy display... Someone sent me a link to this today.
MUST...HAVE
There's a copy of the FDCPA here and it is kind of interesting to read what is and isn't allowed. We should all get to know this.

And while we're at it, were they using Vi or Emacs? ;-)
