  2. technical issue on EVE Online Battle Breaks Records (And Servers) · · Score: 1

this is, from my perspective, without a doubt a technical issue.

the people who got wiped out, if the killboards are correct - only destroyed 3 ships (helios, onyx and anathema)

for them to not have dropped any other ships in such and engagement, given their capability - can only mean they could not move or couldn't even see they were in a fight.

the killboards would also suggest the engagement was 421 against 65, even at those odds they should have destroyed a portion of the other fleet. even if it was 842 vs 65, nothing would prevent them from attacking except a technical issue.

i have been in engagements with over 800 in system (before dominion) and was able to function.

so, certainly there was a record broken on sheer lost of assets in one stroke, but it defiantly needs a foot note.

(also, if there was a deliberate attempt to drop the node, well yea - strike against them too, anyway)

there will no doubt be a rematch as the attacking alliance still owns another 20 titans

  8. Attack the darker areas on Getting the Most Out of a CS Curriculum? · · Score: 1

I always learn the most with programming when i push the functionality of a program into an area i am blind to; blind for lack of inexperience, exposure, knowledge...

an example might have a programmer who writes some gui spreadsheet program from the ground up, then - deciding his brat would benefit, coding features for graphing, imaging and drawing.

take a lab project that does some menial task and extend it to execute on another platform, rewrite it in a language you don't know, make some command line program compile on windows, linux and mac. write a utility for a friend who is taking math beyond your understanding.

something else programming classes do not seem to cover is essential tools like version control software (cvs, svn) and issue tracking systems for collaborative development; lets not forget planning ahead for a clean rollback when updates choke. learning how to utilize these invaluable means, or better yet - setup and administer them, will help to illuminate oneself as well as future coworkers.

  9. wtf?? on How Would You Usurp the Web Browser? · · Score: 1

    Why the fuck would you?
It took how long to get almost everybody (yea, im being generous) on board for some fucking standards - yea, thats what we need - sign me up for another round of 52 card pickup!
The only thing we need is a clear check list for which any do-dah can apply to media - which - and it may be utopian - would clarify the difference between content and cosmetics. certainly there are situations where they should not be seperated (example, Andy Warhol's "200 Campbell's Soup Cans"), but the objective, the function, the value that this here internets provides is the transfer of information.
The only drive for "Web VII.0: A Smothering" is to put fancier lipstick on an already obvious pig.
There is a very good reason why books have not changed much - g'head and add a Figure 1a reference to a full color pie chart on page 144 - you are still only illustrating existing information (which transfers just fine in text files)
