Yeah, While I get a certain nostalgic buzz listening to music from the 80's, it's very clear to me that it was mostly crap.

That doesn't mean that we're not in a low point as regards the quality of popular music... I think it's clear that we are. That's very different than saying there's NO good new popular bands.

Personally, I've been listening more and more to soundtracks. There's a lot of unique and interesting, genre-mixing composition going on today in movies, TV, and videogames. Neat mixes of classical and modern. Track down the soundtrack for "The Fountain", for instance.

Maybe once I upgrade from XP I'll desperately want a faster processor.

Last I heard, it was a sliding scale. Studios got a really high percentage (like 90%) of box office the first week, and it decreased over time to about a 50/50 split for long-runs. This might vary for different regions and different theater chains.

  10. Re:Absolutely! on Watchmen 50 Days On, Was It Worth the Gamble? · · Score: 2, Interesting

Lots of people went to see it. As stated elsewhere, it was the 6th biggest R-Rated opening ever. It also is the 3rd best performing movie so far in 2009. It perhaps underperformed against what Warners HOPED it would be, but it will be one of the bigger films of the year. There might be 5-10 movies that do better this year. It's not a flop, and it will turn a profit.

There would just have to be some game mechanic added to simulate blocking without actual resistance. It doesn't have to be realistic, if it's FUN.

For some reason, I vaguely remember that the efficiency of extracting energy from heat is proportional to some power (4th?) of the relative difference in temperature between the object and its surroundings. As a practical matter, I think energy is generally reclaimed by using variations on the mechanical work expansion/contraction performs when temperature changes.

I'm sure somebody will come by in a few minutes to prove me wrong about everything I said.

My impression is that the values sent from the Wiimote are jittery in the 0-255 range, a bit like the old joystick pots were. That is, holding it at a certain value might result in 32, 37, 29, 30, 35... and a bit of smoothing is done to get a 'real' value. If the peripheral can ensure that these values are more consistent and accurate, it might help pre-existing games.

Not by that much, really. Just thinking out-loud.

Oddly, the week before I rented "OneChanbara Bikini Zombie Slayers" for the Wii, which has very similar gamplay to MadWorld, and which also has over the top violence and gore, and found it to be the most fun I've had on the Wii for months. I intend to purchase that one. Interesting how two games can play so similarly, yet feel entirely different.

All that said, a title like Resident Evil 4 or the new Metroid Prime in my opinion show the Wii to be an EXCELLENT platform for FPS and hard core games. The control scheme when done well is infinitely superior to the xbox/ps3 analog stick controllers.

RE4 proved that the Wii controls were vastly superior than a standard gamepad for aiming, when done right... in the same sense that a mouse is superior to a gamepad for some types of games. Developers promptly learned nothing from that example, though.
