I'd like to share my story about sleep apnea.

Since my late teens (about 18-19), I had always been tired in the morning, I just thought it was lazyness.

Fastforward to the autumn of 2001. I started having really bad nights, I would go to bed at around 23:00 (11:00 PM for you americans) and woke up at 07:00 (7:00 AM for my neighbours to the south) and felt like I had slept only 2 hours. And on top of that, I would catch all the cold/flu viruses that were running around the office. I got sick every month and every time, it lasted at least 10 days! Then, I just couldn't wake up on time any more, I would wake up at 10:00, 11:00, noon, even 13:00 (guess what time I came in to work!) I basically had become a walking zombie and couldn't take it anymore, so I went to see and MD. He diagnosed a severe depression. See, sleep deprivation induces depression, which induces sleep deprivation, which... you get the picture.

I took the antidepressants, recuperated a bit of sleep for a few weeks, but the extreme tiredness came back.

Then my employer (who should have had fired me months ago) gave me an ultimatum... fix your problem (being late everyday, being sick all the time) or we'll have to let you go.

I then started to do some heavy thinking. I remembered the ENT who removed my tonsils 4 years before, who had mentionned something about not breathing properly through my nostrils at night and recommended I took those blue pills called Entex-LA (PPA, removed from the market since then), a decongestant. I remember taking these and feeling much more rested the next morning.

So, I went to the drug store, saw the pharmacist, and he recommended something equivalent, Drixoral (pseudoephedrine hydrochloride). I took one, went to sleep at 01:00 and woke up six hours later like I had slept for 12 hours! I couldn't believe it! It was my damn nose!

Went back to the ENT, told him I was taking Drixoral, and that I thought something was wrong with my nose. He examined my nasal passageways, and diagnosted a septum deviation which prevented proper airflow. Just to be positively sure, he ordered me to take a polysomnograph (a sleep test, with a bunch of monitors: breathing, blood CO2 level, etc...), and put me on a waiting list for surgery (I'm also in Quebec, so healthcare sucks) He also put me on medical leave until I had the surgery

I took the sleep test. Diagnostic: obstructive sleep apnea. A septoplasty and turbinoplasty had to be performed.

I had the operation, and my life was forever changed! I have learned since then that sleep apnea can cause SEVERE problems: cardiac troubles, depression, immune system slowdown, psychological issues, etc.
