You can record 8 years of chinese lectures, for example, but you can't force your brain to draw long-term relationships between them without thinking about it
Why not? Since we don't really know how the brain works, and we're basically just dreaming anyway, why are we ruling out the possibility that the long-term relationships could be stored and downloaded too?
Anyone who has seen the current season of Survivor on CBS knows that the expression "Not exactly rocket science" just doesn't have the same effect anymore.
That is a clever rhyme, but I'm going to hold that since it is two words it does not disprove the Rhymin' Hypothesis.
Very clever though. It's funny though, because I'm from the southern US and the idea that 'bizare enj' would rhyme with 'orange' actually threw me for a minute. I had to run through all of the ways I had heard 'orange' pronounce. The way that rhymes with 'bizare enj' is definitely not the common way around here. The most common would be something 'or unj' and the most odd-ball way I've heard sounded something like 'oinj'. The 'oinj' people were from Iowa, and 'orange' is actually a one-syllable word for them.
If you have some artists willing to create characters for you, you could probably talk them into creating a few tessellations for you as well. You could also google for 'tessellations'. I took a quick glance and it looked like there were quite a few relevant hits.
Along the same lines of what you were saying about having electronic friends on TV and everything, one of my friends made an interesting observation a couple of years ago. We were talking about how when we would meet someone, our first impression of them (mostly based on looks) was that they were lot younger than they really were. We had both noticed this with many different people that we had met while in college.
He had the theory that this was directly related to watching a lot of TV. He pointed out that on TV the highschoolers are played by actors and actresses that are close to 30 years old in many cases. Since those are the people we see the most (sadly) it was skewing our perception of the real world.
I've always thought that was an interesting observation and it's right along the lines of what you were saying here. Our virtual tv friends have more influence on our lives than the real life people we know.
Not too long ago I went to one of Jerry Seinfeld's shows and he opened up with "Well, here we are together again. It's your weird little TV friend!"
This is only slightly related, but here goes. Does anyone out there know of a way that I can use some combination of computer programs/scripts and hardware to control my dish network receiver from within a program? I have dish network and cable and I'd like to use something like freevo (modified) with the guide features, but I would like to be able to do all of my channel changing through one interface. For example, if I selected a channel that I got through the satellite only then I could send a command to the satellite to tune to that channel. It would give me a seemless interface into all the channels I receive, and the person watching wouldn't have to know that to watch FOX you use the regular cable channel and to watch TLC you have to turn on the satellite and put the tv on channel 3.
I feel confident that this could probably be done using some infrared transmitter, but does anyone know of a way that might be able to send commands directly to the satellite receiver without just acting like a remote control?
I've lost about 15-20 pounds since around August. It probably would be a little more by now, but I pretty muched stopped losing when Thanksgiving rolled around. I'm getting back to it starting today.
Anyway, I made a few minor changes in my diet. Mostly I eat the same things, but I substituted a piece of fruit (banana for me) instead of chips at lunch and replaced about 80% of my drink consumption with water. At home for my evening meal, I eat the same type of stuff as before, I just don't go back for seconds.
I have also been taking karate classes since July. The classes are 1 hour a night 3 nights a week. It really helps motivate me to exercise and I feel like I might be learning a little self defense out of the deal. My life is so uneventful that the only thing I've had to sacrifice to go to karate is that I now watch a few of my favorite tv shows on tape when I get home after class instead of live.
Anyway, I really gained a lot of weight when I went to college and stopped playing basketball. I went from 170 to 235 in those 4 years. I've tried to lose it a couple of times in the past, but I've always lost motivation. But now, I'm down to about 215 and I don't really feel like I've worked that hard at it.
I think that you have to change diet and exercise both, but for me the important thing was to not make such a drastic change in diet that it would make me feel like I wasn't eating what I wanted because then I would just revert back to the old diet. Exercise wise, I think it is important to pick something that you enjoy. It was also helpful for me to do something that was on a set time schedule. Going to the gym doesn't work because I can go whenever I feel like it. The problem is, I never really felt like it. Now, I know that karate class happens at a certain time on certain nights and if I don't go I'll miss out. I can't just put it off like I did before.
Well, there you have it. That's what works for me. Hopefully a few bits of that will help you too.
I see a lot of people saying that this isn't so great with mp3 players in cars now, etc, etc.
But, to me, this is the coolest thing. I commute about 1 hour each way every day to work. If I put in a new CD in the morning I've already heard it all the way through twice by the time I get home in the evening. It doesn't matter how many CD's/mp3's I have, everything always seems old to me with that much listening going on.
As far as local radio goes, it's OK, but no local stations really play any music I like, so I end up listening to the same old morning talk show every day and then 1 CD (all the way through) in the afternoon.
Playing MP3's in my car would be nice too, but it is about more than music to me. Looking at the XM station line up, I see lots of things on there tha I would like to listen to that just wouldn't be the same without being live. I really like the idea of listening to ESPN radio or The Discovery Channel.
Plus, I like my radio to be a little unpredictable! No matter how many mp3s I have, they are all gonna be stuff that I've heard before. Even on random play, after the first note or two, I know exactly what to expect. I like to channel surf, and listen to new things.
I take it you haven't downloaded the spell checker yet?

Is it shaped like a sea-horse?
exactly my point!
...sounds like the name of a geek college.

I have no idea why I thought of that, but that stupid MC Hammer song came into my head as soon as I read the article title.

Is the fact that I can't find 'sporange' on dictionary.com or my physical Merriam Webster's Collegiate Dictionary the flaw to which you refer?
There are no words in the English language that form a two-syllable rhyme with 'orange'
Discuss.
Is it true that some people are so overcome with bias that they must categorize everyone into a "coder" or a "scripter"?

sneakemail.com is my new way of eliminating spam.
My PC doesn't look quite enough like a clothes dryer. This looks like the answer!
5) ??????
6) Profit!
I say if you REALLY want a machine that thinks like a person, than isn't an actual person the solution?
Dish Network? Yeah, I just got it too. The problems you describe are very annoying, but it is better than the television alternatives in my location.

I believe I read on the XM website that some of their stations are "uncensored", so I'm assuming that the "7 Dirty words" won't be banned.
