I work for the ticketing industry.. You don't really want to know what goes on underneth the covers.. *trust me*
Imagine a systems originally built for 8086 machines.. We just recent (in the past year or so) came out with a true windows release.. But only after hacking away to get our IO code to work under windows.. Can't re-write, because we can't "wait that long"...
*sigh* maintenance programming forever..
(that said.. I'm working on getting Python to be our scripting language, as opposed to the bizarro internally written scripting language we have now..)
The other thing I found that was interesting was the introduction of using the case of the first char of a variable to signify the scope.. That would take some getting used to I suppose..
Ok, so I haven't read detail specs on this.. But my guess is that the compilers will need to be changed to implement this.. Then any software would need to be recompiled.. No changes to the source for the app, but a recompile. The compiler would be the one that knows what is data, and what is code, so it should be able to flag stuff accordingly..
I had that extension installed on my box (Gentoo for those that care)... It caused Firebird to slow down considerably... Closing a window took 5 secs.. Switching tabs took several seconds.. Not fun.. As soon as I disabled that extension, everything was nice and fast again...
I liked the extension and what it did, but damn it slowed everything down..
I happen to work as a developer for a ticketing software company, and I can attest to the fact until about a year or so ago, everything was written in DOS (w/ Borland 3.1)....
ANd yes, its a very niche market... WIth teh DOS based version of our software, internet connectivity was a royal pain.. The available TCP stack was only a UDP stack (written in house), which causes all sorts of interesting issues..
And to be honest, I prefer the DOS version for some things still.. But mostly, it is alot better.. Plus I'm able to push new techonology on some of the old guys (python instead of the inhouse bred scripting language, XML for communications/exporting, etc...)
When I first started with modems and the like in 86 or so, every BBS I was on had a "chat w/ sysop" feature... Realtime typing... Though some folks could get ahead of the 300 baud that the was popular at the time.. So this predates my first experiences...
It wouldn't suprprise me if the first computer to computer comminucations were a simple app that just sent whatever was typed to a receieving program on the other end.. ITs certainly one of the first things that I would do...
I always thought of copyright and license to be two seperate things.. I can hold the copyright, but give you a license to distrubute it anyways you feel, thats the jist of GPL..
If they are saying that copyright only allows one copy, then there's many many companies that will have issue with this.. Think of software that allows 5 copies installed... Usually, they are called 5 user, yes you got it, licenses.. Not copyright..
How about this?

Replacing SMTP?

· Score: 2, Interesting
Keep using SMTP... But after the message is recieved, and the connection dropped, have another mechanism connect to the senders server (from the MX in DNS), asking if it sent this MD5SUM(message), on this date/time? If so, let it through. In not, check the user's preferences to see if they allow non-checked emails, and processs accordingly (place it in a users subfolder, forward to admin, whatever...)..
This doesn't break anything as it stands now, users/admin can choose how its handled, and should be fairly simple to implement.. There would be an overhead cost of keeping track of the MD5's... But it could be done...
Make sure you have Character Devices->SUpport for console on Virtual Terminal enabled.. If you don't, you wont see anything.. But you kernel actaully was booting.
Check out ebay... I snagged a Phaser 740 for $100 or so, plus $100 shipping.. Though I had to replace a few of the consumables (which can be expensive), its been a great printer.. Networkable, Postscript level 3... Slow to warmup (3-5 minutes..), but hey, it works, and prints great..
I got that for the reason that I don't print enough, and my ink was constantly drying out...

I haven't researched it recently, but what would be a kinda killer app for me is roaming addressbooks... From what I read, older versions of Netscape had this feature, but no one supports it now..
I would really like to be able to sync my palm, and have the email address available on my web-email.. Or on my GUI email client (Sylpheed).. Or in OpenOffice..
Yes, LDAP will do alot of that, but I would also like per user.. I want my own roaming addressbook, and my girlfriend can have her own.. ANd being able to have a global addressbook would be bonus..
Is there anything else out there, besides Netscape Roaming, and is supported by a few email clients?
I recall on usenet year ago, a student, whose school policy was first 6 letters of last name, first initial, last initial..

Bah... We used the 78 speed.. Then again, we were "gifted"...
Now get them to multiple times with the right time and they could really do some damage...
Mmm.... Mechanical Resonance...

Everyone has the right to a profit.
Ugh... Please...Please... Don't use that terminology.. No one has a right to make a profit.. You have an opportunity to make a profit...
Saying that we have a right to make a profit is too close to saying "we demand profit"...
