Yes, the apology and refudnd was good, but as far as I am concerned it should never happened anyway, not as an oversight, not as a policy. Google shouldn't be a company that needs to be told that that sort of thing is bad practice, it should know it anyway. However, the people they double refund is a very nice touch which most companies wouldn't have done to make up for a mistake- I just wander what caused the complete round about turn, sounds like they found someone in a position of power who was too money orientated got replaced.

  8. Theoritically on How Much Does a New Internet Cost? · · Score: 3, Interesting

All you need to know is the cost of the fastest connection material per metre, the cost of decoding stations, the cost of laying cable per metre, cost of building decoding stations. Then all that would be need is to take the area you want to rebuild, map out where you want to cover, and it would be prettysimple assuming you just use a simple back bone spidering out to smaller and smaller areas untill it goes to each individual home. Unfortunately, this would only work on smallish scales, because while you could with a bit of work figure out how to rebuild a state, or maybe at a push a small country, in reality you'd be talking about possibly continents rewired. Plus of course you want to be future proof, so would you want to put breaks into the backbone connections, it would cause lsightly more latency, but if you don't, and you need to add a connection onto the backbone, that could severely damage backbone structures for several hours and slow connectivity by huge amounts during the time.

Then of course do you want backups- do you want to protect california for example, against earthquakes, possibly by wireless, or by several backbones running perpendicular to each other.

I don't want to sound too much like a troll here, but do we need that many TV channels- rather than hundreds of TV channels running 24/7 with their average uses being low, but of course having very high peeks on popular shows, we should have on demand services as television. This'd cut down bandwith, put up competition and work well. Of course its a good idea to retain "Recommended veiwing times" and "First Showing Times" to retain seasons with patterns, Example- my family likes House M.D, its on every thursday, for the last 7 weeks we've missed it (thursday isn't a good night) but because at the momenet I can pirate them (I don't see this as immoral as we're doing it in place of just watching it on TV and we're simply viewing the same thing at a different time), as a result I get to see the season I like and don't loose bandwith on preset re-runs, we just watch every wednesday night instead.
