I dunno about that..... I just graduated with a BS of Business Administration from the University of North Carolina. I've got a pretty decent entry level job with IBM Global Services, and also had an offer from Accenture. IBM is literally hiring THOUSANDS of college grads, and I know Accenture was picking up people as quickly as they could.
I can't speak for the whole industry, but my experience coming out was pretty positive.
I purchased a 1601 off ebay, two days before the IOS vulnerability. I called them that day, told the rep I'd purchased the router from ebay and had no service contract. He asked me what version of IOS I needed, and I had a new patch that day. He even helped me install it, and got me a different version when that one didn't work. He never once tried to shake me down.
Just a quick and shameless plug, MainBrain allows schools to set up an amazing website which lets parents check grades, attendance, discipline, and all sorts of other information. It runs on Linux, using Perl and MySQL.
A quick and shameless plug.....
I'm the CEO for MainBrain School. It's not exactly relevent here, but we provide student information software that lets parents and teachers get online and see their child's grades, attendance, etc., as well as communicate with teachers over message boards.
The software is deployed on linux, using perl and mysql. We're still proprietary for the moment, but actively considering open sourcing the software when I can be convinced it's a good business decision.
As a final note, we're offering a grant program right now where we are selling the software at our cost to schools in the North Carolina area especially, but also throughout the country. If you're interested, check the website out. My contact info is on there.
Get a sense of humor, jeez. Yeah, I've had stories rejected only to have another version posted a couple days later. Yeah, this isn't critical to the world, the net, or anything else. But Slashdot is "news for nerds" first, and "stuff that matters" second:).

Karma points to whoever remembers the old Nintendo (yeah, the 8-bit thing I still play constantly in my dorm room) game this code is from. That is probably the only video game code I'll still remember when I'm 80:)
Seems like a great browser, but when I installed KDE 2.1.1 and loaded up Konq, I couldn't try to load any web page without it crashing. Is this common, or just an oddity for me.
Konqueror works like a charm for me. Fast, stable, and works on the *vast* majority of pages. Every once in a while I haveta fire up netscape, but its getting more and more rare.
Perhaps someone should write a paper about how the success of slashdot has caused Taco's spelling and grammer to spread to other publications.:o]

I haveta disagree. While I haven't put a ton of effort into it, my debian system right now refuses to upgrade almost 20 packages because something somewhere is screwed up. Probably some more of the perl bullshit it took me a while to track down last time. Even if this isn't a business machine that costs me tons of money if it screws up, it's still a pain in the @$$ sometimes to run unstable on it. An option like the parent suggested would be well worth it.
well, I'm stuck in the fenced in pseudo-prison ghetto of Hinton James which sure as hell feels like it's about ten miles from campus, but just to let you know Metalab isn't located in Phillips but in Manning. Phillips is where the comp sci dept really got started here, but according to http://www.ibiblio.org/wdg/ "
Our base of operations is out of wonderful, window-ful 213 Manning Hall, on the UNC-Chapel Hill campus."
This is quite probably the dumbest complaint I have seen. Part of writing open source code is that others can sell your work and make/lose money doing so. That is a *fundamental* right of Open Source software. The fact is, netscape inc. has funded a large part of the development, and given it back to the community. Don't like the way it works? Download mozilla and hack on it some so it is how you like it. But don't bitch to slashdot, that's about the most lazy, irresponsible, and pointless reaction of all.

That's not the MS Style, and actually it's smart here. Any specific disadvantages addressed, the community is sure to respond to quickly. Ease of use? KDE2 and GNOME. Shitty web browser? Mozilla and Konqueror. etc. Instead they just spread FUD and try to turn the public against us in general.
That exact quote used to be (still is?) up in Red Hat's office.

Check this school administration software and let me know what you think.

Well, so much for my big night out. Guess I know what I'm going to be doing at ~4:32 AM
I can see it now, "Sure baby, we can go back to my place, but first I've got to update my sources.list and upgrade to KDE3."
"Ohhh, I love it when you talk dirty......"
Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't GPS now limited by the DoD? A friend recently told me to withing 30 meters, but that seems pretty high to me.
Yeah, some I'm in a pedantic mood. Sue me.

Great to see it's still hanging in there! I hate it everytime the dot goes down. Almost as bad as Slashdot dying. Awesome job!

Ok, Sorry for being clueless and stupid, but what is the "all your base are belong to us" thing? Anyone post a link or an explanation? Thanks!
