If you think Halo 2 had the same story as doom then you probably weren't paying attention. It would take too long to explain the story in depth, but I'm sure it's all on wikipedia anyway. You shouldn't have to "pay attention" to the story to experience it. Playing the game should be a vehicle for telling a story, not the other way around; Metal Gear Solid nailed this, Halo did not. If you're simply using the story as an explaination for why I'm out here killing things (yes, even if you explain a little more after every battle), then you're just wasting effort -- it may be a more in-depth story than Doom, but it's a story that should be in the front of the manual and not crammed in the middle of the game slowing things down.

I wonder if my equally anecdotal success with Vista will get the same sort of mod points the parent did...

Out of the box everything worked. Period. Wifi connected and downloaded my graphics drivers from Windows Update. After some reboots (admittedly more than I would like) everything went smoothly. I have only had a few freezes in my four months of use. The systems hibernates and restores without any trouble 100% of the time (more than I can say for ubuntu). The battery seems to last longer as well. Everything is snappy and I think the accelerated window manager is more subtle and tastefully done than compiz or beryl. Don't get me wrong, I love linux and use it whenever I don't need access to windows apps but there's no point in pretending like Vista is garbage. In my opinion it's a substancial upgrade over XP. Right, because XP surely didn't have working Wifi, or working graphics drivers, or any type of stability, or hibernation support.

The PS3 will just sort of sink into the mud. The 360, on the other hand, would explode in a brilliant display of silicon fireworks after the GPU reaches critical heat and collapses into a hunk of raw, fissible uranium.

  10. You're not understanding the issues on EU Think Tank Urges Full Windows Unbundling · · Score: 1

If this whole thing was to go through, it wouldn't mean that computers had to come OS-less -- what it would mean is that Windows would be optional (or rather, it would be optional not to get it) and that the computer would be $cost_of_windows cheaper without windows. Currently, even though a retail copy of Vista costs $250 or so, you only get $60 back if you demand a refund for the bundled copy of Windows.

Second off, you don't want goofy unexpected results in a game. You want results that fit within a parameter set by the game. This can vary from encounter to encounter within a game. I often find that games are more fun when things go awry. Of course, this usually leads to me having to restart whatever level I was playing (single player) or just suicide (multiplayer), but AI is generally better when you create a dynamic algorithm and try to model situations that it would work well in, even with unpredictable results.
