The difference between/. and Fark: in/. you get a discussion on the history of an alphabet; in Fark you get people wondering if the Bulgarian nurses imprisoned in Lybia are hot.
Glad to see more Bulgarians here.
Yeah, if it weren't so tough to find a person to make a prototype out of the one I am designing and even harder to finance the b!tch, I'd have a nice readerly one (perfect for me, maybe not for others). I am the quintessential reader and I have the idea and some of the software but, hey, money and engineer friends don't come easy. (Both might if one flashed some rackage, but that's not really an auspicious start to a business.)
My family's cell bills point out every. Single. Call. Even those within said person's free network. 6-7 pages easily, printed on both sides. Maybe Apple outsourced billing to Bulgaria.
Wouldn't that get a wee bit confusing though? Just a teensy-weensy bit?
If one's discussing scientific theories and phenomena I should think one needs to use clear and precise terminology, not lowest common denominator approximations. Otherwise things get bogged down, and language gets misunderstood, and discussion gets sidetr... oh, wait.
Well, it would be funny if it weren't so solidly based in truth. Athens is named after Athena, one of her nick names being Parthenos (the virgin because that's one of her defining characteristics). From there, you get the Parthenon. So, that joke is actually quite true.
A major discovery of hers was that chimps display actual altruism, just like humans.
(Which always comes as a nice argument when talking to Republicans or to other people who claim that altruism is only a result of societal expectations.
I keed, I keed.
No, I don't.)
Haha, no.
Primate behavior, learning, communication, etc. research does not have a singular goal. If there were one overarching purpose, though (aside from knowledge for its own sake), it would be in discovering how close on the continuum they are to us and what that means to human identity. Take any activity, any brain pattern, any quirk humans have, and you will discover that in most cases apes display those to a certain extent. Sally Boysen (the scientist with whose research I am most familiar since she was my prof.) has discovered the chimps' abilities to communicate on a very high level, to not only count but perform basic math like adding, to learn and repeat human language (though this is hardly news). She has also discovered that the way chimp brains do the above is very, very close to the way human brains would and they compartmentalize objects pretty much like humans. For example, chimps, just like humans can only perceive up to three objects without counting; to be able to say "there are four cars in the street" your brain perceives the three initially and then it increments. Same with chimps.
Her research was fascinating. Too bad OSU bailed out on her.
I'm still not sure whether Fox is not a huge hoax perpetrated on unsuspecting neo-cons in order to make them appear even more ridiculous than they are in reality. But, unless that's somehow true, yeah, this is Fox crack journalism (pun unintended) at play.
To put in in Brit terms - it's as if The Sun suddenly took over the UK media and developed a love/hate relationship with T&A and a severe paranoia of any and all carbon-based life forms and domestic appliances. Oh, and started masturbating to the Union Jack.
And don't even bother mentioning walking somewhere instead of driving. *gasp* Even to the thin ones. Thank god I enjoy doing things on my own.
Actually, thank Cthulhu I moved back to Europe.
True, but there is still a stigma attached to social internet sites, regardless of content, as time-wasting venues. One interviewer might think it's brilliant, the other might conclude that can't draw the line and read livejournal and fanfic as well. When it comes to interviews, I'd rather be safe than sorry.
How on Earth do you know there is "no outcry from these jokers"? It's not either-or, you know. A lot of "those jokers", me included, volunteer, send money to charities, write about stuff that's socially relevant to them. I doubt you're the final authority on what's worthy and what isn't and, certainly, your self-righteous anger is waaaay unjustified in this situation.
And I don't really understand how you've failed to pick up on the fact that there's an entire spectrum of people in any reasonably-large community and, yes, there will be some batsh!t ones and some drama queens, etc. Don't paint us all with the same broad strokes.
Fandom constitutes a great part of the lj stakeholders and it's fandom that SixApart have annoyed by deleting discussion, fanfic and adult communities. Those are the people buying paid accounts for their communities, themselves, and their friends. If SixApart don't do anything to alleviate the situation, all those people are just going to claim they are 18+ and move over to JournalFen (a lot have done it already).
Forgot to add another point: fandom is a raunchy little beast and if darker adult themes are threatened by deletion, it will move. I just don't think it will happen though because SixApart will not keep this up.
Seen Mike Judge's "Idiocracy"? "Some had high hopes that genetic engineering would correct this trend in evolution. But sadly, the greatest minds and resources were focused on conquering hair loss and prolonging erections." Cue in a picture of an orangutan with generous hair and a visible bulge in his pants...
For all the crap women get for our cosmetics and stuff, Y-chromies seem to be just as vain.
I'll be sure to remember that the next few hundred times Harry/Ginny shippers are compared to wallabies and pro-choicers are called 1000-thread count Egyptian cotton pillow covers.
Not to say anything about the countries behind the scar left from the Iron Curtain which are now really entering the markets. They have nowhere to go but up.

Livejournal will still be under California's jurisdiction, which is where SUP's subsidiary Livejournal Inc. will be located.

Well then, we should certainly change scientific lingo to cater to what the lay connotations suggest.
Stochy predicts a 96% probability of failure.
Yeah, I don't think Mr. Gilbertson is aware of all those other countries that are not the US, Canada, or the UK. It's a common misunderstanding.
That, or he hasn't heard of the phenomenon of sockpuppetry.

Based on the average Slashdot post, most Slashdotters have ADD and/or logorrhea. Not sure about the IQ.

Now only if Rimmer reads Slashdot archives...

Well, the swish-swish of sweaty back-hair upon an armchair would kind of clue one in.

As long as there's far more tech-savvy men than women, the generalization by assuming a gender serves a useful purpose.
You got your copy of MadSkillz Census for 2007 already? I'm still waiting for mine.
I read it as "an an*l b!tchslap wtf" I've been hanging around bad-p*rn snark communities for too long.

Yeah, I used to think "lol" was just some derivation of "lo". Those were much more interesting conversations.
