I think this sums it up nicely.

  2. You know, when I worked in the industry back in the day (late 70' through the 80's) it wasn't so toxic. But then, we didn't really have UI/UX designers :-)

  3. It has been widely reported for at least a couple of weeks at least that Google is pulling the plug on Google +. I don't know how long the grace period will be, but you might want to prepare yourself for it going away soon.

Seriously, humanity needs to start considering whether there is any way to control population. I am not sure that there really is. Population will simply grow until we eat the planet. Sad.

Better look over your shoulder, and mind how you use your iPhone, because Your Score is being calculated. This is just a bit too much, and you know it will be gamed and spoofed. It's just another hit to your privacy. But no one seems to care anymore...

  7. I'm thinking a lot more than half...

  8. You know, an awful lot of really smart and accomplished tech people are somewhere on the Asperger's spectrum. They just don't 'get' other people's emotions that well/at all. I think it's wonderful that Linus (finally) recognizes this, and is willing to take steps to mitigate it. Hopefully, technological excellence won't take a back seat... but I don't think it will.

... Yes, we are in a post-hammer world now. Screwdrivers have displaced them, and now rule!

For fuck's sake people, how about 'the right tool for the job'? Some stuff that PC's were used for in the past can now be conveniently handled by phones and tablets. Some can not.

Some tasks require keyboards and big displays and tons of storage and RAM and CPU, and some do not.

And some of us old geezers need keyboards and big displays, because we don't have the eyesight we once did.

And some of us who fought in the trenches of the PC Revolution in the 70's and 80's are appalled to see the trend back to mainframe/terminal. Which is all this 'Cloud' crap is - don't kid yourself. Your stuff is out of your control, and your stuff is being finely sifted to build a profile of you.

I am not OK with that.

"Windows is like taking a 18 wheeler to 7-11 for milk, "

This is why I switched to Linux many years ago. Windows is just too much, layers and layers of too much. It has just grown too complex.

That said, no Chromebooks for me - I'll just use Linux, with my local apps, and my local storage. The kids don't seem to care about privacy anymore, and that's their business. I just don't want my stuff on someone else's computer. You know it is going to be compromised sooner or later, even with the best of intentions. Which I don't ascribe to Google, in any case.

Meanwhile, The US is a bit of a mess, the Republicans own all branches of the Federal Gov't, and Microsoft is doing quite well.

So your whinging seems a tad disingenuous.

Here's a free clue - don't start a post with 'this post will certainly be censored'. It's just so weird and passive-aggressive, and makes any point you might have subsequently made seem a bit weak, or dodgy. Just say your piece without the off-putting preamble.
