If not, I recommend a jaunt to Thinkgeek and get a boat-load of those Digi-Q remote controlled racing cars. :)

  5. Apple Pro Key USB on Qiuet Keyboards with Tactile Feedback? · · Score: 4, Interesting

I use an Apple Pro Keyboard USB (the clear graphite one) on my Linux machine. My BIOS detects it, so I can use it to do BIOS setup as well. It's a great keyboard, and quiet as heck. The only issue I've had is X will map the Apple keys to the Windows keys, which is where my fingers expect to find the ALT keys. I did a quick re-map on them, though so all is well.

    Hope this helps!

    2. Burning to a CD. I can't imagine any company so enthralled with releasing their catalog with copy protection is going to allow you as a consumer to record youur own CDs without first contacting them to see if it's OK. I'm thinking what Audible has (program contacts Audible to ensure you can copy this audio book to CD) is what they'd use. I can't imagine them letting consumers just burn digital audio without some catch.

  16. Re:Bad numbers on Customers Rate PC Vendors' Tech Support · · Score: 2

You missed the point. The point isn't that Apple doesn't use off the shelf parts like every other manufacturer, rather they have control over the operating system, where PC manufacturers do not. That adds to the burden on the support technician, who not only has to understand the quirks of the hardware they design, but also the quirks of an operating system they had little input on.

  17. Re:Bad numbers on Customers Rate PC Vendors' Tech Support · · Score: 2
Not necessarily, I'm saying that Apple has more control over their software and hardware than most manfacturers are afforded using Windows (or Linux machines for that matter).

Your support can still suck even with full control. Sun, HP/Compaq/Digital, and SGI also provide the OS with their hardware, and have varying degrees of support. Selling the OS as part of your hardware isn't a magic bullet, but it allows you as a manufacturer to keep control over the whole process rather than support a hodge-podge system.

  18. Bad numbers on Customers Rate PC Vendors' Tech Support · · Score: 2
I think part of the reason you have such high numbers for Apple is because they have control over the entire machine. They make the hardware, they make the software, and they certify the parts that hook up to their hardware. PC manufactureres don't have that luxury. Since all of these manufacturers bundle Windows with their machines, they also become liable to answer every single Windows question, and support every Windows version (2000, XP, 98/Me, etc.) Of course Apple is going to score higher numbers than the PC manufacturers, they know the whole damn thing. If Microsoft didn't put the burden of OS support on the manufacturers, you'd probably see higher numbers for the hardware manufacturers, and some really funky numbers for Microsoft.

Yes, support is going down the tubes, and companies are pay lipservice to quality of support, while trying to get people off the phone as quickly as possible, but I think they deserve some credit for having to support something they weren't even involved with (the OS).

If someone seriously wants to reprove Kepler's laws, who am I to stand in their way? Hey, if they can come up with refinements to the ways those laws work, or heavens forbid disprove them in some unique way, do I have the right to tell them to knock it off? True there are many unsupported devices out there, but you can't make the corollary that time spent on the XBox would be better spent elsewhere. Who's to say the people who worked on the XBox port would have spent their time supporting something like an NVidia card or some obscure Tulip ethernet card? I highly doubt it.

Instead of chastisting those involved for wasting their time, why not encourage the hacking. Hacking keeps the community alive, and spurs other to "do one better". OK, so now we have Linux on a modified XBox; why not get Linux on an unmodified XBox? How about running Apache? Maybe even get SDL ported over to the XBox? Who knows what the limits are? Something that may appears as stupid now may spur off something incredibly clever down the road. Remember, it took many people tying wings to their backs and bikes before someone figured out how to get those various hacks to work right. Who knows if someone down the road might benefit from this. It might even be you/

Actually I think several unsupported drivers were coded for this effort... It's called the XBox (in total).

Why get all pissy with people who are enjoying themselves and are coding something that could potentially useful? I'm sure folks made similar claims when Linus rolled out his first kernel. "Why a new kernel? What a collosal waste of time! Think of all of the effort that could have been put into writing something for (insert favorite OS from 1993)

That's OK, though. All of us are short sighted in our lives. I used to think the same way about KDE and GNOME. "What collosal wastes of time" I used to think. Fortunately those very talented programmers didn't listen to the naysayers. Now I don't scoff when someone ports Linux to different hardware architectures. Hey, it's their life.
