That's all true, there is one thing you can count on a sales rep to do and that is to sell you something. You as the consumer, though, shouldn't:

1.) Buy anything you don't know anything about. Would you buy a used car without any mechanical knowledge without having someone else check it out? If you answered yes I have a car thats perfect for you! I for one wouldn't go out and buy a video card, without first checking to see that it would work in my rig, just because someone said it would and was better than the one I had currently had, and I hope you wouldn't either.

2.) Be competent enough to say no. How many newspaper telemarketers have you told no to? They're just as pushy as any other sales rep, so why is your cable/telephone provider any different? Why would you buy something that you haven't researched first? There's a sucker born every minute and you fall into that category, and should wave your right to complain later, if you buy without thinking first.

Believe me, I'm not condoning what the Communications Industry does to its consumers. Most of it is down right devious. But, as I've said before, in my experience most of the issue is with the consumer themselves. If they would take the time to self educate then more tha half the issues they experience would be wiped away. I for one have never called my ISP complaining about my internet. Why? Because I had the knowledge to learn about what I was working with. Granted many people haven't been exposed to the experiences I have, having been in the industry for so long. But still...if you have a modem and your lights are doing what they should be (and they're labeled and you should have some type of documentation as to what the lights mean) then guess what....you shouldn't be calling your ISP because you can't get online, the problem lies elsewhere. However you CAN call your ISP for HELP, its called tech SUPPORT, not tech DOES IT FOR YOU. Your ISP's network ends at your modem, after that its your problem.

If you can't manage your own network that for the most part is only comprised of one machine, then you have no right to complain about how your ISP handles theres, which on the smallest network is still comprised of over 50,000 nodes, and however many households are attached to those nodes.

Granted there are issues that arise: signal issue, noise issues, CWER and BWER issues, packet loss issues, provisioning issues, platform issues, migrations, legit billing issues; the rest (which is over 60%) of the issues falls in the consumers lap. How many times have you called your support line and they helped you reach a resolution? 8 times out of 10 if they where able to help you resolve the issue, that was one phone call you shouldn't have had to make, because had you taken the time to learn it/figure it out you would have fixed it yourself. Most of you taught yourself programming, PROGRAMMING!! You're going to sit here and tell me you can't figure out how to manage your network?

Just as a sort of side note: So many people are running to the store to buy into WiFi. Well go ahead. If you want to invest so much of your time and money into a product that is literally still in its infancy (even with all the things we can do with it now), well go ahead. But don't call Linksys because you can't get a wireless signal during a thunderstorm. Your the fool that thought you would. They knew you'd call as soon as they looked at the news in the morning. FIOS is the same deal. Just had a thunderstorm and are wondering why your getting slower than dial up internet? Do yourself a favor and conserve the small amount of smarts you have! Theres water in the line. Call for a trouble call and get over it. Those tech support people are put thru hell, because people like your friend (and this isn't a knock at your freind) can't follow the simple instruction they were given. Powercycle everything from the point where the cable line comes in the house up to your computer, means just that....not powercycle from the computer to the line, beca

Your a fool if you think that. But because it happened to you and it was a legit issue, that makes you....cmon, you know whats coming. Say it for me.

What I was implying with my original post was that the MAJORITY of customer issues are due to the fact that the customer is ignorant of what is happening. Not once did I say that I haven't seen my share of issues, matter of fact the opening sentence in my original post points that out. But in my decade plus of Telecommunications, most of the problem lies with consumer. Do you look at someone that goes thru 3 clutches a year and say...man those clutches suck, or do you look at that person and say....hey, you might wanna take another drivers ed course?

You can compare every big name in communications and then look at the issues with the services, and while there will be issues that are identical the rest are like apples and oranges, the only thing that matches is the H20.

So -- record the CMACs (why not?). Ask "Did you obtain the modem from us?". Escalate to your modem supplier to make "8" and "B" more distinct. Are you serious? That's like calling coca-cola because you can't see the difference between the b's and 8's under the cap. Better to be thought dumb then to open your mouth and remove all doubt. I'm not trying to be an ass with that, but it really pokes my asshole when people start making assumptions over things they know nothing about. That'd be like me telling my mechanic that I think its my timing belt that's stopping my engine from turning over.

The rest of your ideas were very feasible, except that over half the mac addresses that are in the system are fake macs input by reps taking short cuts to get the modem online.

The other thing that you fail to realize is that no where near 90% of customers rent the modem from the company. It's actually closer to say that 75% of all customers (in ANY company....been doing this awhile) own their own.

Do you know the inner workings of a cable company? I doubt it. Lets put this into perspective. Let's pick on Comcast with this one. Only 16% of Comcast customer's in New Jersey, are only Comcast customers. The rest of Comcast's customers came from the cable/internet companies they've acquired. Now...why do you think those cable companies went out of business? Anyone with half a brain will tell you because their customers where leaving, or the service sucked. But someone with a full brain will tell you it started with the record keeping. Now, imagine, you've just been hired to work at Google, and your soooo special you end up taking their lead position in some database administration position. If the prior lead wrote shitty code....how long do you think it would take you to fix the issues? A long time. Same thing with any cable company. If you take a look at any of the big competitors in either cable/land line/cell phone you will see a big trend, the majority of their customers come from acquisitions. That means account info as well. So to expect your cable/internet/phone company to know all of your equipments serial/mac numbers would be as fruitful as expecting it to rain purple rain in the middle of a heat wave.

I've been in the communications racket for a loooong time, and yes I've seen my share of call center calls where I would listen to the phone tech, tap him/her on the shoulder and drill into them until they knew what they screwed up.

But, believe it or not (and most of you won't because I'm going to describe YOU in a sec), but the majority of customer issues are caused by the customer.

    Case in point:

The very last customer I've ever spoken to (this is why I remember it) had been pushed around by tech support for over a month (at least this is what the customer and the acct showed). So I figured, let me go out of my way for this guy. Forget corporate policy and hit him up with his internet. I asked him to read me the CMAC off of the modem.

"00:15:a3:45:3b:2e", He replied. That mac is just pulled outta thin air for story telling purposes.

"ok, is this 123 I'm a moron lane?" I ask

    "yes it is" he replies.

ok I gave you a bootfile for internet, reset your modem and try again" I say

"Nope nothing, you people all have your heads up your asses, get me a manager now!"

"No, sir until I get your internet up I'm not going to transfer you at all"

Over 45 min later, and 200+ insults thrown at my intelligence, I find the problem. This jackass, who for the past 45 minutes has been insulting my intelligence, and has done the same to countless other reps, had told me his CMAC address was 00:15:a3:45:3b:2e when in reality it was 00:15:a3:45:38:2e. Theres one problem right there...we've been giving your internet to someone else. Not only that, but this moron who said he lived at 123 I'm a moron lane, failed to mention at all that it was a duplex and so 123 I'm a moron lane apt A was listed as just 123 I'm a moron lane, while apt b (where he lived) was 123b I'm a moron lane.

I see this type of stuff happen all the time. You can't get online and you have a router? The issues most likely with your router because your modem is online. Customers hear that and right away think...buy a new router. Then they get made when they get home and still can't get online, call back in, and hear the same reason. Then they get ignorant with the support they're getting when they're the moron that buys crap they don't know how to work. They went out and spent 80+ bucks for a router, when, had they known how to work they're equipment, they would just have reset it.

Long story short is: If you don't know how to work your own equipment..........don't blame tech support. Also, don't curl your lips to yell at billing for the $400 cell phone bill you got last month when you have it in the Analog Roaming Mode (do cells even have this anymore? I haven't had a cell in about 8 years)....thats your dumbass fault.

I have always been of the mind that companies like Dell or IBM, or e-machines, or hell linux and microsoft, should ALL have mandatory certification programs if you intend to use thier product. And this is across the industry. You cry about one service provider, then when you realize the grass isn't greener on the other side you cry about that one and go back to the one before "or possibly another one"

None of you can argue these points, disregarding the "special" cases, why? Because I've been doing Communications, every day since the day I joined the Marine corps, and I've done everything from a field radio (think ham radio) to hf, shf, uhf, to Satellite Comm, down networking, and now I just manage a voip networks for multiple companies.

You can cry all you want...that's your right. But don't be the person that thinks...oh Comcast/Verizon sucks I have a lot of service interruptions so I'm going to Verizon/Comcast to get away from them.

The ONLY differences between ANY type of company is:

    1) Its customer support}----makes or breaks a company

    2) Price of its service compared to its competition

    3) Oh wait, there is no three

All the service issues most subscribers experience are industry wide. You want FIOS? Get it. Seeing as Verizon is the first company to make it part of their services I can guarantee there will be/are wide scale issues with service due to:

    1) lack of knowledge on part of techs both new and old

    2) Faulty craftsmanship (this goes with number 1) in that if your fittings are loose water can get in, and anyone that knows anything about fiber knows fiber optic + water = scattered information, or hell...lets just say I use a shitty blade to cut it. Then I wouldn't know there was an issue until you started to complain, and trust me...cut it with a jagged edge and your lucky to half of what you normally would if the cut was smooth.

And, yes I do want FIOS (if only for the speed), but I'm not going to get it until at least 2 other companies start to provide it (which is coming shortly) only because the first implementation of a "new" system is ALWAYS full of bugs. That's why I laugh when I hear ppl bad mouth Comcast's CDV. I laugh because it's funny for one, and for two, their running the voip service across their OWN cable lines. It NEVER touches the internet, their trying to do something no one has done on a large scale (like Verizon with FIOS) so of course it's going to have bugs, until the people working on the back ends of those systems get used to the system and start to anticipate problems and resolve said issues prior to the customer experiencing any service related issues.
