The bidir protocol we used all the time was "HS/Link" or something. It was pretty damn cool... although yes, we did see all the other assortment of bidir protocols back then (Mpt, Puma, smodem (?), jmodem, etc.)
Oh c'mon, is the Slashdot crowd so young that it doesn't know the Jolly Roger or Anarchist cookbooks? The more "well read" of us all know what thermite is said to be capable of, regarding payphones... plenty of good use, there!;)
Sorry, I can't agree with you that Adelphia is a good service. I lived in Fairfax for years, and had Media General/Cox. first for cable and then later for broadband. Still preferred it much over Adelphia, which still seems to be about 5-10 years behind the former.
The inability to rollout broadband, and the fact that I've heard nothing but gripes about "Powerlink" only further those suspicions.
Oh yeah, I meant to tell you -- I'm looking into Luminary... they apparently have a 2400 sq. mile wireless broadband coverage area, much of it out here. I called them, they're plenty sympathetic to the plight of those in Loudoun county. Prices seem a bit high, but better than anything else out here.
They also told me something interesting -- basically, they have to come out to your place and do a site survey as to whether or not they need to put up an anntenna... BUT, according to them anyway, under the 1996 Telecom act, HOAs can't deny them access to put up any kind of equipment that allows users/customers to get broadband access.

I've been free of Crapital One since June now, but I still haven't given up the crusade against them -- here is my Epinions review -- I encourage all of you to do the same:
My girlfriend is from Beijing originally; We went over there back in April-May, on vacation. I was talking with her brother once about computers -- well more realistically, my gf was translating for us -- and I mentioned that I don't use Windows, that I use Linux. When he asked why, I went on about a few of its strong points, one of them being that it was pretty much free.
His response was that since piracy is so rampant in China, Windows is, in essence, free as well. He added that he doesn't forsee people leaving the windows platform, as long as it's so readily available on the black market. If serious crackdown began to occur, there might be a move otherwise, but until then, there was very little chance of an alternate OS being adopted.
There was a bit more in the discussion too, but I can't remember offhand what it was. In any case, it put things in a really interesting light.

You want to know why I don't have broadband? Because despite living within 10 miles from AOL, PSINet, WorldCom, as well as big corp. offices of several other well known firms, there is still no viable broadband for most people out here in Loudoun County.
Rumour is, eastern Loudoun was a failed experiment in "fibre to the curb" a few years back. There's more fiber out here than in a Metamucil factory. Thus -- no DSL.
"Fine," you say, "what about cable?" Well, we're in a real jiffy of a situation in that aspect too. As if the fact that we've got Adelphia out here isn't bad enough, the bit of broadband roll-out that they are doing is going west-to-east -- leaving the areas with the highest population densities out in the cold.
Finally, since you likely live in a TH/Condo out here -- myself included -- unless you have access to southern skies, you have no satellite options.
A while back, I wrote a letter to my local Representative about the fact that they lured all the high-tech companies out here w/o having the infrastructure in place for high-tech workers. His reponse was typically clueless.
Verizon themselves also recieved an angry letter from me, very recently, as they incessantly flood my mailbox with DSL ads, despite the fact that I can't get it.
Bitter? No, not at all...
It's inevitable..

Oh, seriously, c'mon now, look at what you're implying. I seriously doubt these 14 year-old, scrawny, pimply trolls could lift an erect mammoth penis, much less run with it!
If they could do anything that somewhat resembled heavy lifting, they wouldn't be trolling Slashdot. Perhaps if they could recognize anything that somewhat resembled an erection, the same could be said.

Is that Home Depot has a spokeswoman named "Jill Taylor"?
Does anyone recognise that name? It's the same name as Tim "The Tool Man" Taylor's wife on Home Improvement.

Let me guess, you're in Sterling/Ashburn, too.
I can empathise.
Yes, there is... the blasted "green card" lawyers who got this whole spam snowball started.
Perhaps you can use barycentric transmissions of Raffi singing to attract the attention of these so-called "Belugas".
Until I see them, I remain cynical!!
The entire letter I sent them is too long to post here, but suffice to say, I gave them an earful. It can be found in the appropriate bugzilla bug:

In Sterling. There are a few areas out here where you can get it, but for most of Sterling, Ashburn, Cascades, etc., it's out of the question.

Yeah, just like robots took all the jobs away from factory workers, and just like computers took the jobs away from data processors, etc., etc.
The economy shifts. Deal with it. The rest of us have for many, many years.
