Well, Americans as a whole, are pretty dumb. Being an American I can say this. Dumb is what we do. We do it well, I think.
But, can you at least agree that a system that was developed for the military be controlled by the military whilst we are at war? You may not agree with us going to war but can you at least agree that any disadvantage to the Iraqis in favor of Americans on the ground is an ok thing? If you're on a boat then bust out your astrolabe for the week or two that the war will be on. Is it that much of a hardship to ensure that Americans don't get blown to bits?
disclaimer: I don't think this war is such a hot idea myself. But, its on now. As for french fries, I just had some. Deelish. And no I haven' t forgotten Lafayette.
ok, bear with me, there's lots of room on digital cable. when a program is being recorded to a device the commercial gets dropped and instead you end up with a simple 5 second image/logo at the beginning and end of a show saying "The episode of Ducktales brought to you by the good folks at Texaco"
Those sorts of ads always seem to stick with me more. I can still remember a miniseries about George Washington that was on NBC back in the day that only had ads for GM and they were really short ads. So now when I think GM I think cars and george washington with little interruption.
I'm not saying we should go back to the days of NBC News brought to you by Camel cigarettes only but the image logo could have all the companies that paid for the show to be on.
anyway, just an idea and I'm sure a million/.ers will tell me how dumb it is.
dude, I've never heard of this. I think its terribly nifty and that slashdot posted it doesn't make slashdot lame.
I was listening to NPR one day. They did a story on Siberian throat singers. Its terribly popular and has been for generations. I'd never heard of it though. Does that make NPR a stumbler?
post your link, get your karma but keep the bitching in your journal.
"I wonder what portions of 'you' would be noticeably different to your family & friends?"
what all goes into the hippocampus? is your personality in there or just the bits that make it possible to remember where your keys are? if you have alzheimer's you're already a different person than your kids or spouse remember from a few years prior.
have you seen what we have on the menu lately? The fucking salad is like 5 bucks. Um.. poor people don't go to McDonalds, they can't afford it. Poor people go to Taco Bell. Also, the only cutomers we get are Marines, Squids, Construction Workers, and Executive contractors.
actually, there are usually only two and they are called Q-ing ovens (industrial strength microwave) and reheating food is strictly verboten. What you want to watch for is how long the individual ingredients have been sitting in a heating cabinet. if your burger patty is as hard as your boot sole its been there for about an hour.
WTF. I've turned into a McApologist. I hate working there. I've lost my soul now...
um... we don't. Really, we don't care. I have no idea who those people in the commercials are. They've never worked at a McDonalds before I swear. Oh, and to dispel a myth. the guy cleaning the restrooms or sweeping the parking lot is often the highest paid non salary person in the store and gets better benefits and actually works less. most days I just do the crossword then go home.
ok, lets call computer game creation an art. ( i and I belive many of us believe it is) Now, there is support for the arts. But, there is not the money to support the next quake or lackluster black and white. also, seeing as how many governments keep trying to outlaw gaming why on earth would they turn around and support it?
last year I took a trip to the states local to Virginia. Never logged into anything till I got to Ohio and used a friend's link to acces my webmail to hook up with a friend I was going to drop in on in NC. Then we used the cell phone when we were close to Charlotte to get precise directions. But, dude, when you're in a bar you would look a little odd carrying along a laptop.
and? so what? Yes, some folks suffer, lose their jobs, etc... guess what? some new tech comes along and for about 50-20 years the US will be the place where it flourishes. then it will move to another country and we start the cycle again. big whoop.
newsflash junior. Citizens of the USA do not live in a democracy. There is nothing about US government that is remotely democratic as far as the people are concerned. This is not a political argument. This is fact. Citizens of the USA live in a Republic. We always have, we always will...until the revolution, comrade. I really wish people would get their heads out of their asses on this point.
personally I like http downloads over ftp. I'm on dialup. I like to know how long its going to take to download a file. I don't get that info with ftp. as for http being slow? never noticed. but I would if I couldn't tell how long it was taking.
agreed. everyone says apple is going to die all the time. I think apple has officially been declared dead 27 times in the last 5 years. people even declare linux dead. Microsoft has even been declared dead. I'm going to start a new trend. I'm going to declare Sun alive.
seem to be lamenting how we will flash our BIOS. well, we being geeks will have floppy drives. we being joe user never flash our bios anyway so it doesn't matter.
The only thing that gives me much hope for our private futures is that all of this can change iin a few years with a new administration. It might not, but it could. The only law in the United States that lets me sleep at night is the 22nd Ammendment (no more than two four year presidential terms). When someone tries to change that I'll get my gun.

so in other words if I don't pony up for a Salon subscription the terrorists have already won?

we could just give the password out to all the adults by spelling it out.
"Don't tell Timmy, the password is M-I-C-K-E-Y M-O-U-S-E"
ok great a little pc. but dudes if you're going to show me a black pc do it against a white background. half those images are damn near invisible.

works in phoenix perfectly too.
you did notice that this is a 0.1.0 release right? you are aware that linux at the release point was next to useless.
there's no reason to own a windows machine now :)
