Are you kidding me? Well I can make a piece of crap look like a sculpture but it's still a piece of crap. Not only that, a poorly mastered cd has no bearing on the quality of a record- of course a record can sound better than a crap-cd. A good cd can sound a million times better than any record and anyone who says otherwise is insane. All those "audiophiles" out there... I have a bridge I want to sell you.
I type TONS every day being a developer... my carpal tunnel problems came NOT from computer usage but rather from having a written style FORCED upon my hands and wrists by jerk teachers growing up. No my hands are weak as shit and I can't write more than a paragraph without feeling it. But I can do uhm... other... activities....(lol) just fine, typing included.
I can see by the fact that I've been modded up that people agree with me.
I'm not a an anti-MS fanboi either... once XP was finally patched together (for the most part) I enjoyed developing on it... I like SQL Server 2k5, Visual Studio 2k5, and Visual Studio 2k8 is really nice so far but man, when Mr. Ballmer was screaming "Developers! Developers! Developers!" He must have forgot to prefix it with "Fuck " when it came to Vista.
It's a shame too because over the decades they've put out some nice products and... here, you only hear about their failures, never their successes or contributions... not to say that the anti-MS crowd here doesn't have validity, they certainly do...
Don't forget that if you're a developer forced to work on a Vista box it's buggy as shit, there are a million and one patches you have to install and god forbid if you're asked to migrate any asp.net apps from iis6 to iis7... talk about undocumented manual conversion... ugh...
Noscript Is a great plugin for Firefox in this case as well. I too have never used a firewall or anything else except for Firefox & Avast & I've had no problems whatsoever.
Unfortunately a little common sense goes a long way and most people have even less (common sense) than that.
I think this will be very interesting *ONLY IF* Radiohead publishes the results of such a promotion.
It will be interesting because they are (for whatever reason) a relevant and popular band with access to traditional B&M distribution. So we can see (very approximately and inaccurate duh) -what geographic locations paid the most average price -what geographic locations which paid nothing -what the average per-download price was -highest & lowest price
and so on... esp. since it's not often that a band with as much exposure as Radiohead (don't even say Prince or I will slap you) experiments like this.
"We are drowned in tides of twaddle about precious IP, Trade Sekkrits, Sooper Original Algorithms that must not be exposed to eyes of mere mortals, and all manner of silly excuses. But what's the real reason for closed, proprietary code? Embarrassment."
That's like saying because I want my privacy that I have something to hide. I think we're all a little bit past 5th grade now.
The inherent problem with Vista is barely anything I've seen in this discussion- it is the focus of MS' attention to features instead of functionality.
Think about it. MS added the UAC feature. They added DRM features. They added a new UI feature or two. They added so many features it makes my head spin.
Now the functionality is more or less the same. It's (Vista) not any better at any of the tasks I used XP for. In fact, the glut of features hinders the overall performance of the OS thus decreasing the functionality of the system as a whole.
Everyone I know who dislikes Vista is primarily on the side that it is slower, somewhat of a resource hog and is overly-complicated with features and options for these features. This isn't just developer complaints but say my Mom who is using Ubuntu these days (though she doesn't know it and could really care less). My fiancee who is impatient and get pissy when her computer doesn't respond the way she wants (and expects) or me who spent a couple hours trying to install this or that patch so I could develop somewhat efficiently only to revert back to XP virtualized on my desktop.
There's too much junk and not enough performance to back it up.
Please correct me if I am wrong, but isn't the creator of EAC from Germany? I remember when he removed the native TOC read functionality from EAC due to some weirdo law along these lines. I wonder if he'll continue development since he seems to err on the side of legal-safety in these matters.
Don't confuse the two. There is nothing personality-wise that isn't shared by both genders.
This has to be either an honest mistake or a blatant misunderstanding of social interactions and male/female personality structure in EVERY culture. I call hogwash.
Thank goodness and yes, you are right and Mr. Lyons gets kudos for being wrong and admitting it but he brings up a good point which drives me batty- that conspiracy theorists seem to think that the truth is much more exciting than it is, I've long thought that it was silly to accuse him(Lyons) of being paid by SCO or anyone else and I really wish these "theorists" would think before they speak as their words ruin reputations and cause problems where there should be none and make them look like the jerks they (the theorists) usually are. I have a better name for them, libelous mukrakers.
Well way back in the day, we (the royal we, you know, the editorial we that encompasses any nation applicable) developed nukes with the idea that having them would be a deterrent for war- after all, who would attack someone when they have a bunch of nukes even if you're pretty sure they won't use `em for fear of nuclear fallout... and now we as humans are battling each other over the idea that one group of people might obtain this technology or not and may figure out how to use it violently we meet this with violence.
Now we are developing pain-based weapons to subdue large groups of people, most likely riot control, who would want to riot when you know that a wave of pain is headed your way even though they may not want to use it for fear of the weapon being turned on themselves... and someday these weapons will probably be used on the general populace of nations over the idea that one group of people might rise up and overthrow another with violence which we meet with violence.
I'm no philosopher and my brain is more geared toward logical-problem-solving than politics, anthropology or philosophy but I can see the issues that this will cause at least in a vague way.
After nuclear weapons were created to destroy nations a different kind of enemy to the majority of the world, decentralized and yet, organized, appeard on the playing field which nuclear weapons would be useless against. What is someone going to do, nuke the birth nation of every terrorist? A new enemy to the makers of this weapon, one impervious to this weapon will come about. Soley because this weapon was invented. Not an improvement of armament or weaponry but one that pain is irrelevant to.
It makes me sick that those students didn't rise up against those security guards. Yea yea, you can throw all your bullshit "he deserved it", "your country was founded on this n that" bullshit at me but you know as well as I do that it doesn't stick when we are discussing things situation by situation. Fuck those students, fuck the police, fuck John Kerry. Andrew Meyer didn't deserve what he got and I hope he makes the most of it & knows what kind of a police state he really lives in.
Scrooge McDuck is worth "five multiplujillion, nine impossibidillion, seven fantasticatrillion dollars and sixteen cents", which apparently translates to $10.9 billion, according to Forbes.
That makes my day that you looked that up, it (my day) was going right down the toilet (actually a great day when you think about it but you know those days when ya just feel meh?) and I was only guessing which makes me even happier:) And perhaps I am just tired and lazy but where did you find the reference for Scrooge McDuck's wealth?
That's not what I am saying, what I am saying is (in a polite fashion) that this isn't really news like the article thinks it is. So what if an old accepted method is dying, the write of the article doesn't seem to understand what you said. If people continue to point out the obvious like the article then we have a chicken little "the sky is falling" issue that never seems to go a way.
This means that people will come up with new encryption methods that I couldn't possibly imagine (not much of a stretch). Based off these newly powerful methods people will find new impregnable methods. Sort of like how when people came up with the idea of wooden shields, someone came up with a way to pierce them so someone came up with metallic armor and then someone came up with the idea of a combustion-powered missile (gun) and someone came up with Kevlar and so on...
These patents are being presented with Microsoft's long term business goals in mind- to integrate ads into the OS as they make their shift towards SaaS of the coming years and to integrate with Windows Live among other things... since they seem to think the thick client will go the way of the dodo (what morons, the real killer thin client is a portable pc, laptop, phone, etc.. not one without it's own OS and defined userspace) and they will be able to create a (for lack of a better word) layer or shim for advertising which they will charge for advertising on. Think of the "cloud" crap you keep hearing about from Mr. Ballmer.
The good news is, this will fail miserably similar to Netzero's old revenue model (when they first started). The bad news is, they have a larger money vault than Uncle Scrooge so they will recover and continue to make idiot ideas...
Adjudication for a summary judgment when requested by the petitioner only gets accepted when there is gross procedural negligence on the side of the respondent. Otherwise, in cases when the petitioner requests it, it is a violation of due process as the respondent is entitled to a trial and judgment by his/her peers.
This isn't really news, this is just regular procedural paperwork. Any lawyer will file anything to at least try to get something past a judge if it looks like it ha an ounce of merit... fucking lawyers...
He is/was quite the adrenaline junkie, always trying to break this or that record by unconventional means. While I envy his spirit and colorful life, this should have been expected. Bless his family and hope for his safe return but expect a memorial to him someplace soon.
But unless the ISP does alter its configuration nothing will ever be fixed. The reason is that the windows users will need to connect to the internet to download the microsoft patch.
Fair enough for a moment but you are forgetting Microsoft should be actively patching these bugs and have a responsibility to deal with this if it preventing people from getting the internet copy.
If Microsoft can't create a version of their own OS that cannot access its own proper updates they should be sending patch cds to anyone who needs it.
Records can sound better than CDs

Gimme a break. These products suck and show that whole "It's-a-new-product-if-we-add-a-clock-to-it" crap is true.
Besides, all this junk will end up as refurbs on woot or jellyfish anyway...

I heard they cancelled Enterprise when Mr. Bakula started calling his tricorder "Ziggy"
Unfortunately a little common sense goes a long way and most people have even less (common sense) than that.
It almost sounds like one of those referral-program schemes. Or I could be completely wrong.
Mod parent up and give her a call to voice your public and anonymous opinion.

That's a lot of moolah. I'm surprised with all the FB/MS hugging going on that Facebook is running PHP

they have a larger money vault than Uncle Scrooge
Heh, I had my doubts, so I looked it up.
Bill Gates' net worth is $56 billion. http://www.forbes.com/lists/2007/10/07billionaires_William-Gates-III_BH69.html
