From looking at the front page picture of their website i'd say that it looks like an airfoil with a slight positive camber (creates some lift) but negative angle of attack (nose farther down as the trailing edge). That should more or less create zero lift but was probably engineered like this for less drag given the ground effect of the road underneath (last part is a wild guess).
Certainly not an awful lot but still enough to worry about who manages it. Since every time a salesperson in a classy outfit approaches me my BS-o-meter goes near the top of the scale before (s)he has even said a word, i guess i value competence more than appearance but that's just me i suppose.
It's still nice to see a nicely dressed up female talking her a** off while trying to sell something to me but i pretty well know *why* she's dressed like that and that's not for this special occasion in the first place...
A good product doesn't need any publicity beyond formal information, not even nekkid chix.
I, for one don't %&$! care about how the people who manage my money dress themselves, as long as it's something appropriate for public appearance with regards to place (as in country/culture) and common decency (yes, this is variable).
In fact, every time i see those overdressed goons in their ties and stuff i keep asking myself what they DON'T have and try to cover up with this clownesque outfit.. competence ?
I'd call everybody who takes the four and a half million pieces of the 747 apart to convert it into something, say... a house, a maniac. This would include deriveting all aluminium sheets from the wings etc and riveting them back together... For the sake of what ???
I almost thought that i am the only one to wait for the mythical bus full of naughty long legged large breasted swedish chicks that will break down just in front of my house one day...
Jesus christ, are you completely crazy ? Of course it's lots of use to the whole computer-security industry which probably wouldn't even exist if someone didn't take the time to write a new virus/worm/whatever every now and then !
The more i think the more i cannot exclude that the industry writes the malware on their own...
Let's do some guesswork and math. (One has to resort to this since the website doensn't contain much geek porn, but rather esoteric bullshit...)
The thing has a mass of 1600kg, which means there need to be ~16000N of lift for level flight. If the lift to drag ratio is a - guessed - 40 to 1 that translates to 400N of thrust. At a speed of 15m/s that's 6000W of power or, say 12000W if a conversion efficiency of 50% is taken into account. (Quite easily doable at that speed with modern props and electric motors.) Methanol has an energy density of ~24MJ/kg (according to Wikipedia) = 2000s of operation. This, in turn, means that 50kg of fuel will comfortably give a full 24h of operation.
Leave those solar cells on the ground and synthetisize methanol !
Disclaimer: all figures are rounded, but i don't think i'm off by an order of magnitude...
because it's the definition of electrical resistance. IMHO Ohm's law says that I ~ U, but only when R is constant (which is not the case in soo many situations, but you'll know that)
If i had to pick one it would be Schroedinger's equation, three-dimensional and time dependant of course. Should be a great opener for small talk but any of these will definitely make you look, well, geeky.
They are no cars. They are jokes. Falling into pieces when you touch them.
For a machine that is made to move at over 100 mph, that is ridiculous.
You'd better stay away from ultralight planes then. Those move almost twice as fast, weigh not much more than the four wheels of a Hummer plus it's driver and are certainly not as ruggedized as the proverbial '83 Mercedes Diesel.
Then, you wouldn't drive them on a crowded highway, that's for sure...
If this discussion goes on like this we'll be discussing cake recipes to be baked in your dishwasher in 25 posts from now or soemthing as closely related to the original subject. It's probably why i still read Slashdot.
"a mixture of liquefied petroleum, cooking gas, and air to create explosions"...will do pemanent damage to the human body - hear, hear !
(Nothing really new here, move along !)
Well, that's what i thougt after having read the title and the first line...
"all time" = "ten year" ?
And who would read more than a third of the summary ?
There are special parachutes for this (which will probably open when jumping from a not-so-high-building), but i'd suspect that given the height of this tower any "normal" parachute will do.

That'll be the citizens who supervise *themselves* ! Just give the government (or...) full access to everyones data and even the UK can switch off their CCTV cameras ! Brilliant !

...and then you watch your boxen die one after one from overheating ?
Sooooooo they just bought a billion dollars worth of Fear, Uncertainty, and Doubt?
Remember, they already own the codebase of Windoze...

Not that i am particularly macho, but you are looking at the feminine records. Scroll down !
Just for the sake of telling i know better : gliding records actually are more like 15000 m, 3000 km and 1000 km @ 200 km/h.

BTW: what about a URL ?
If i had one of these lasers i wouldn't waste my time at a soccer match.
You imply that a significant number of geeks could be present at a soccer match which is, er...words fail me.

Won't there be more days in a, say, year then ?
