It's only a partial dupe... The first story was about the HD DVD key getting censored on certain sites, and the second story was about Digg's front page getting trashed because they were one of the sites who was censoring it.
Slashdot deserves a big thumbs-up from the tech community for NOT being one of those sites!
Sad to say, but the BlueFrog anti-spam client never really worked correctly. I tried it for two weeks, and found that often failed to successfully report any spam at all about 1/3rd of the time. Even when it did work, it never seemed cut down on my spam at all. If anything, the amount of spam that I'm getting now has doubled, since some spammers seem to be intentionally retaliating against me and sending me a dozen copies of same spam mail over and over again. I went from getting 50 spam messages to 100 spams a day, and I did nothing to promote my e-mail addresses during that time besides installing BlueFrog. Thanks for nothing, guys.
Sure, the drug companies say that they're trying to cure cancer and heart disease and all that, but us tin foil hat wearing Slashdot users know the TRUTH.... They're creating a new master race of "super telemarketers" and "ultra tech support" grunts! These new genetically modified super-operators will be able convince suckers to buy Ginsu knives and magazine subscriptions over the phone in record time, and will be able to fix most AOL connection problems through telepathy! We're DOOMED, I tell you! DOOMED!
Exactly... No one in their right mind would want to give the appliances of their home network a public IP address. The last thing I want to worry about is having my microwave or refrigerator being hacked and wrecking my food because I haven't installed the latest security patch to whatever embedded OS they're running.
Heh, I hope that you're not too shocked when your kids start hanging at their friend's house more often because they just want to play Call Of Duty 2 on their Windows box or PGR 3 on their XBox 360. Most kids don't want to learn how become professional computer geeks, they just want something easy to use to play on.
Trust me... I had Dad just like you growing up. He was always trying to teach me MathCAD and Wordperfect macros on that old PS/2 that he brought home from work, and I just wanted to play SimCity on it! I probably learned more valuable IT skills writing custom batch files to make Wolf3D work right in DOS than anything he tried to teach me, mostly because I was enjoying myself while doing it.
MSN has been offering a free personalized homepage with news, weather and stock quotes since 1996. Hell, I remember using it with Internet Explorer version TWO, for pete's sake. There is NOTHING original about customized portal sites, as most of the major players like Yahoo, MSN, Netscape/AOL and the like have been offering them for nearly a decade.
Simple... Upgrading the video processor in the Mac Mini to a Radeon 9600 would make this $500-$700 computer dangerously close in performance to a $1,300 low-end G5 iMac. Apple probably doesn't want to risk cannabilizing their existing higher-end desktops with an upgraded entry level system.
Out of the hundreds of millions of computer users out there, now many actually know how to check the checksum on a file? Now, out of THOSE few people, how many bother to checksums on all of those files before installing them?
Exactly.... Any Slashdot reader worth his salt knows that wireless broadband is best used for downloading pr0n and bootleg music while you're on the bus!:)
"In fact, through our research the last few days, we have found an advisory on the Apache website that states, 'Please note that at this time, Windows support is entirely experimental and is recommended only for experienced users..."
"Through our RESEARCH"? Heh, some research. The last time I installed Apache for Windows, is said that Windows support was limited in both the README file and the online documentation page.
If this incompetent IT staff can't read the damn README file before installing a product they're unfamiliar with, I have no idea how they're going to handle an operating system transition.
And the damn thing still doesn't come with a built in radio. I don't know what in the hell Apple is thinking, as almost all of the other MP3 player manufacturers added an AM/FM tuner to their products years ago.
Sure, having 1000 songs in your pocket is cool, but what if I want to listen to a live news or weather report? What am I supposed to do, carry around a separate radio for that?
Oh, and YOU think that you have a reason to hate this jerk... I do Windows administration for a big company that refuses to patch its systems in a timely manner! This worm kicked my butt, and I want vengence! Can I volunteer to join the lynching party for this guy, or is the waiting list already too long?
"On the flip side though, things like groceries, cars, cable tv, computers and so on all cost the same in this country no matter where you live."
Cars and computers, maybe. Cable TV and Groceries? No way in hell. When I moved from rural Pennsylvania to the metro NY area, both my grocery and cable bills jumped 25%. Sure, I got a slightly better selection of food options and premium cable channels, but not enough to justify the cost difference. Of course, IT work pays almost double in this area, so it was still worth it to move.
Because the cost of living is much higher here, almost everyone from the CEO's to the janitors get higher wages. These added employment costs come back to consumers as price increases, so everything from gasoline to the price of weed killer at the local K-Mart is higher.
Unfortunately, Tom's article is out of date now. It only includes cards that use an AGP slot (So, none of the new PCI-express only stuff is there), and doesn't include anything from the new Nvidia 7800 line.
Unfortunately, it doesn't sound too much different than how the game is played already. There are tons of people in WoW wearing epic weapons and armor that that they bought with real money outside of the game, which gives them a HUGE advantage in things like dueling and PvP quests.
The only difference now is that Blizzard is endorsing it, instead of turning a blind eye to it like they are currently doing.
This is an RS/6000, so that disk probably won't work. It's probably just easier to just boot off of the AIX install CD and nuke the file systems that way.
Sorry man, but you have too much faith in the user's ability to make correct choices when prompted with a dialog box. Unfortunately, most people just seem to "click first, and think later" when prompted with a technical question, and it causes all kinds of problems.
If Microsoft (or anyone else for that matter) ever released a product that used that type of security, they would end up being flooded with "I accidently clicked the Do Not Grant button and now Software X won't play my music anymore" type support calls. Worse yet, they'll also get a few arrogant customers you will SWEAR that they clicked the Do Not Grant button even though they know they did but refuse to admit their mistake.:(
World of Warcraft on a $400 computer?!? HA! If you wanted to play WoW at anything above slideshow framerates, you would need to spend at least another $150 to upgrade the video card from the integrated Intel crap that you get in that price range. Not to mention that WoW is a memory hog, so 256 MB isn't going to cut it. Pony up another $50 for a 512MB memory upgrade.
Of course, this $600 computer is still much cheaper than a $1,200 G5 iMac. Just don't think that either one of them are going to be able to run World Of Warcraft or Doom 3 quickly with all of the details turned on, though.
Yeah, I don't get it either. Steve Jobs already said that HE WILL NOT BE OFFERING OR SUPPORTING OS X FOR NON-MAC HARDWARE, which means that you STILL will not be able to get a Dell/HP/IBM(Lenovo)/Gateway/etc computer with a legit copy of OS X on it.
So, if you don't like Windows, Linux is still the only major desktop alternative. Nothing has changed here.
Personally, I've found Linux to be very easy to install and update. Fixing things like bad network drivers and updating video settings is still a killer compared to Windows however.
One think that most Linux people don't seem to understand, however, is that many computers users are AFRAID of the command line. Don't tell these people that they need to start running rpm commands and editing text files in vi if they need to fix their Linux system, or you're going to scare them off.

Come on, Taco... Where are the Ponies? If I click that Slashdotit (tm) button enough times, can I at least get a pink background?

If you take a look at their top 100 list at:
. asp
http://www.magnetbox.com/riaa/zeitgeist_topamazon
You'll quickly notice that 95 of the 100 selling records are associated with the RIAA. Hell, the first "RIAA free" album is ranked 34.

True, Linux is already mainstream for servers. It might take another five years to Linux to become a major player on the desktop, though.

Doesn't Google have their own distribution of Linux that they use on their search cluster? Perhaps they're hiring for that.

Who bothers to go to Google's web site nowadays? I just use the Google toolbar built into Firefox.
