Doubtful, but it would be awesome. They would have to be CHRP machines so they can run all the OSs available for the PPC. It would also force Apple to allow cloning again. Dell would be too big for Apple to stop and they would end up being more like IBM; a technology company.
Remember in the early 80's when IBM was the king of hardware? Well PC clones sure took care of that.

So? Who is forcing anyone to buy Apple? Certainly not your boss. Or family members or friends. If they don't want BeOS or mac clones, that their decision and they will face the conciquences(if there is any).

I'm still waiting for that PPC Chrp PC even if it only runs linux. I guess linux is also locked up in x86/intel world and will be
even more entrenched with the new intel optimizations. gcc for PPC isn't going to be as optimised

Only runs Linux? That sound a little closed. If there is an interest in Linux for PPC then someone will make it happen. And it will.

  7. Who cares? on AMD beats Intel in January sales · · Score: 1

Even if Apple does release the G3 motherboard specs to Be, I think Be would find another excuse to not develop BeOS for the PowerPC. Don't get me wrong, I love the PPC (I have 2 Macs at home and one at work), but it makes sense for Be to focus on the X86 market....for now. The PPC market is too small for them to make a dent in the whole OS market share. X86 is enourmous. They can start building a bigger user base in the X86 sector to secure a 10%-20% total OS market share before moving to other platforms like PPC. If you want a high end BeOS system, it makes better sense to get a high end K6-2 or K6-3.

Hopefully, in a couple of years, they can once again diverge onto the PPC(and other) platforms. Saying that you refuse to buy a Mac is not the answer. If a company wanted to, they could make their own PPC CHiRP motherboard and bundle BeOS with it. There is no reason a PPC motherboard has to be more expensive than a Intel mobo.

I wouldn't put too much faith in the Motorola mobos. They are way too expensive. $2400 for a 300MHz 604e motherboard and $3800 for a dual 333MHz is pretty bad. We need someone to develop a cheap motherboard based on the powerPC.

    Ways to make it cheaper:
    Use IDE instead of SCSI.
    Standard DIMMS (SDRAM)
Stick to PCI (no ISA slots or bridge chips)
    Use standard AGP slot

    2. If it is a non CompPC we should refer the customer to that vendor.

Subject: Questions on Microsoft Windows Refunds

A number of Linux Operating System users groups have declared Monday, February 15th, Windows Refund Day. Although we do not expect to receive calls on this issue there is always the possibility.

    1. If a customer calls requesting a refund for a Microsoft operating system that is installed on a system purchased from us and the operating system has been registered with Microsoft there is no refund ability. To change operating systems this customer would need to purchase new operating system software.

    2. If a customer has received a system from us, has not loaded and registered the operating system and is looking for a refund for the cost of the operating system please refer this customer to Customer Service.
