  1. I don't use samba anymore on File Sharing Difficulties Frustrate Tiger Admins · · Score: 4, Interesting

I used to work with samba, having a linux fileserver and a mac osx powerbook, but recently I started working with nfs. It seems a bit faster and more stable. When I change some file on the server, it's directly visible in finder - without having to refresh it.

I also was annoyed the fact when I turned my powerbook on after it went to sleep it would give me a lot of errors about unmounting a network drive. This also was the case with tiger. With nfs, those problems are gone an nfs mount will stay active after the powerbook comes back from sleep.

Why would I need a television anyway?
Oh, I do really hate the television crap they put on air, it seems every time I'm zapping I see a 'police academy' rerun or a 'married with children' passing by. As soon as you notice the laugh-tape in those shows, the fun is over.

If you're thinking about spending a lot of money on a decent simulator setup, spend the money on flight lessons instead, the real thing is much more fun.

It's nice to have an external 1.6tb disk, but not when you're forced to make 1.6tb backups (possibly having to buy a second one). What's the point then in having a 1.6tb databomb, chances that one drive fail are multiplied by the number of drives in these units.

People that switch and many native OSX users, use a package called 'virtual pc' to run apps that are only available under windows.
This software is made by microsoft, you can buy it with or without winxp if you already have it.

So if you switch and buy virtual pc because you 'still need windows' for something, microsoft is actually making more money on you than had you decided not to switch at all!

I've seen the latest version of 'virtual pc' running xp sp2 on the latest g4 powerbook and it worked good and about as fast/slow as a PIII 400-450.

Then, I imagine, it's just a matter of bribing someone trusted enough by al jazeera to hand them over that tape. Later that same government can claim the tape is authentic ofcourse.

  20. copy paste on Windows 98SE emulated on Pocket PC · · Score: 1

Thanks to Miracle and ceasar54 for writing in with the news that a member has got both Windows 95 and Windows 98 SE running on his Asus PPC.

This was made possible by a Pocket PC port of Bochs, by Mamaich, who has also ported DosBox, a "program similar to Bochs but it's a lot faster and only emulates DOS". Sadly, the author tried and failed to get WarLords II working on both these versions, but I'm sure time will tell!

If you're keen to try this on your own Pocket PC, you'll need a minimum of a 256MB memory card (or stream the image over a wireless network) and you'll need a program like Nyditot Virtual Display to increase your screen resolution. Oh, yes, and you'll also need the emulator.

According to Miracle, what we really need now is for another developer to "pick this up and optimize it to get more speed, since Mamaich stated that he will not continue to work on this, but instead focus more on DosBox."

Given that this shows that a Pocket PC is easily powerful enough to run Windows 95 and 98 in an emulator, do you think that attention might shift from developing new Pocket PC games to trying to get the original PC games to work in emulators? While I played a few games in Pocket DOS, the lack of decent controls made enjoying them nearly impossible. On the other hand, a predominantly mouse based game might run quite happily, and allow everyone to enjoy it on the move.

    2. it opens doors for something special, a socalled "meteorite fall", that can only happen now if:
    - Natalie Portman comes to Saskatchewan
    - AND she has to be located

wtf, did I miss something in school?

    What is this "meteorite fall"?

Sure they will be happy. Until "emerge sync; emerge update world; etc-update" hoses everything in their /etc directory, including fstab. Think they could handle interactively updating their system configuration using diff? The answer is NO

My parents don't need updates on that machine: Everything works like a charm now, that's good enough, why would you need updates then?

Perhaps for security, but the only open ports are samba, xserver and ssh. Not something to worry about, especially since the machine is behind a router that blocks all ports.
    - as if - they'll get a virus or worm by email that exploits a bug in sylpheed-claws-0.9.9 - and - that gets root pivileges in linux2.6.3r1 then creates an open port and reconfigures the router - not very likely

Yes I could've installed debian, it would have been a faster install - perhaps my parents could do some updates themselves, but since I understand gentoo better, it was my choice to use that on that machine.

I know some 'normal' linux users that hardly ever update their machines as well, it's because they're still on a slow dailup connection, the packages just take too long to download.

Maybe when kde 3.3 is out I'll give their system a nice update sweep, usually it's not that hard, there are actually just about a dozen files in /etc/ that were editted by me, the other ones I'll just replace without any editting.
