    WTF???

    Japan has a *lot* of cool consuer gadgets that we don't, but as far as technological superiortiy - we have some kick ass things ourselves:

    Pills that can give you a four-hour bonner.
    A day's worth of calories for $1 at McDonalds.
    Internet-enabled vote rigging with new touch-pad voting machines.

    all kidding aside, to this day nobody can touch the SR-71 Blackbird - and that fucker is OLD.

    When the Japanese put one of their "trumpeting joy-bots" on the moon, I might be impreseed.

    Configuring sendmail is easy!

    dd if=/dev/random of=./sendmail.cf

    then hit Ctrl-C when you think you have enough configuring done. Small installs need about 30 seconds, enterprise installs need a few minuites.

    One can always make it easy for employees:

    The hace have Gnumeric/OpenOfice or they can have Excell.

    If they choose Excell - they an two exrea features:

    1) Clippy.
    2) Their pay docked by the purchase price for Excell.

    Can you still trademark terms that have been used before? IANAL, but it would seem like a pretty silly idea.

    In the US..generally no, you can't tradematk general terms.

    The trouble is that other countries have varying standards that let Microsoft get away with this sort of crap.

    I think the very wealthy send personal shoppers to stores and accept/reject the new clothing in their own homes.

    This is certainly true... but the're a class of rich people who wear crap like you and me.

    Bill Gates and Warren Bruffet wear horable clothing. I've seen nicer suits at the local Goodwill than those two wear.

    My version of personal shopper what lets me get clothing while still in my home: Logging into Sears.com and picking out some no-press shirts and slacks, the off to JCPenny.com for socks, and underware. Then REI.com for outdoor clothing and then to BrooksBrothers.com for a suit.

    All delivered to me in a week.

    SCO's version of Unix cam from Microfost XENIX. It's a nasty little hack of an OS that hasen't grown up from when multitasking on a 286 was a "big thing."

    Other vensore Unix have been developed on 32 bit processores with huge resources over the past 20 years.

    SCO Unix is like a Tricycle with a V-8 engine strapped on the side, trying to pass itself off as a industrial earth mover.

    We'll we all know that the Specious Project started on Dave Cutler's work with PDP-11's during WWII. By inventing new opcodes, like, BSH and WRG, Dave and Allan Turing were able to break the Enigam codes that the American and Germans were using at the time. That's how we got the plans for the AtomicBomb from the Germans.

    The Specious Project was also the first atempt to pring Opject-Oriented code to simple Babage style difference engines like the PDP-11.

    (How did I do... am I part of the Specious Project now???)

    I don't think we should ignore the fact that IBM played both sides.

    GPL'ed software doesen't play sides:

    GPG is available to me, as well as rat-bastard terrorist types.

    In additon, it's increasingly coming out that American businesses that were engaged with the Nazi's were great fronts for American espionage. Don't be so quick to jusge IBM - ther'es a lot more than meets the eye.

    I learned this from the Swiss: The Swiss wer'e not nearly so neutral as they'd like you to beleive during WWII - their "neutrality" gave them a lot of room to really fsck over the Nazi's as bet they could without getting caught.

    You can get Knoppix to work just fine with your A30p:

    knoppix screen=1600x1200 xvrefresh=60

    'nunthin like Celestia on a 1600x1200 screen that 15" large - the perceived resolution is awsome.

    It's horrably slow for instant entry.

    The Zaurus uses a version of QT for display of all it's wigets - this is great for fast development, but for a little PDA, it's slow. Also - I thing all the apps arn't pre-linked, so startup times for the apps is hoorable.

    So with a paml to enter somthing you wait .25 second for your app to load up.

    With a Zaurus you wait 1.25 seconds - not much longer, but annoying enouh to make it not fun.

    Microsoft does make it tough to cancel, often requiring passwords you may have forgotten, or specifically notifying them at least 60 days before renewal,

    I make it easy on myself - I just send the company a written letter that they stop service and send it via certified mail.

    The small change of certified mail is worth not having to deal with some kid on the phone for 30 mins.

    If all you need is a PIM - Palm is definatly the way to go.

    I *love* my Zaurus 700 series- it's fun to SSH into a server with 80x24 characters and a real keyboard , but for PIM stuff, it's slow and clunky.

    Bogus argument. SSH is large, but its functionality is well received.

    A year ago I would have agreed with you - but OpenBSD has been reviewed by muitiple *experts* for years - and yet there still was a problem.

    There is the potential for more problems - and I just can't quite trust it perfectly anymore. -Ben
