These days, musicians work damn hard in collaborative efforts to release work without the aid of huge corporations and are doing a pretty good job of it.
There are numerous bands doing the rounds successfully (i.e. as a decently paid job) who market/design/distribute thier own music.
I swore by handcoding until Dreamweaver hit the scenes.
I've been doing websites since 1995 and work on graphically 'enhanced' websites mainly - good solid design with medium graphic usage.
It's got easier as time goes on - apps like dreamweaver have made it easier.
The HTML code is virtually 100% clean, depending on the preferences you set. The Wsiwyg view and editing is unrivaled from a simplicity and speed point of view. The learning curve is a little steep, but easily possible.
Put it this way, you can knock out a quick and dirty html as fast as a text document.
It seems a lot of the 'purist'/. crowd always lean toward 'just use emacs or vi' to create HTML pages.
Obviously they have never maintained 30+ websites before:)
I guess it's the same/. crowd who feel that shockwave flash is a waste of time. They never seem to understand that it's not just code-jockeys who are serious computer nerds - the graphics nerds can be even more purist !
Wysiwyg HTML editors are a god-send to web developers, being one of the most time saving tools, which in turn saves money.
Certainly, a knowledge of coding raw HTML is a must for any web developer worth thier salt and Dreamweaver users often swich back and forward between code view and wysiwyg.
I hope the Nvu initiative does some great things - another quality HTML editor is always welcome.
If every regular slashdotter were to introduce 5 people to the wonders of choice and get them using mozilla or opera on thier windows platforms and then ask those 5 people to introduce 5 more, the word would get out that there is an alternative.
The fact is, 90% of people who surf the net consider that iexplore is the only option - they consider it as being 'the world wide web', rather than software used to access it.
You don't need to educate them too much - just say "hey, try this alternative software that allows you to surf the web safely"
Perhaps this is a case for a bit of decent spamming - fire of a million spam mails advertising the choices that people have when it comes to surfing the web and indicate how unsafe it is to use iexplore.
Surely that would swing the market share a bit more in the right direction and away from a company that certainly doesn't give a damn about anything but profit.
Absolutely no money
Going to the cash machine and finding you don't have any money and need to go into debt.
The bank manager calls
After 2 months of going into overdraft, the bank manager calls and wants to meet. The upshot is he wants to terminate your account.
You have to borrow money from family
Another wonderful aspect of being unemployed - your savings (if you had any) have run dry, you still can't find a job and you have to stoop to borrowing money.
Your friends and Friday drinks
Your friends call and say "come and have a drink with us Friday afternoon", to which you reply "but I don't have any money", to which they reply "don't worry, we'll pay for your drinks"
So you go and feel really really crappy when you can't buy a round.
The catch-22
It's easy to land another job when you already have one.
If you don't have a job and are applying for a new one, they wan't to know why. The last thing you want to tell them is that you were fired or retrenched.
I've been there, I've seen it twice in my life and the 'benefits' are far far outweighed by the negatives.
Even if you've been savvy enough to have decent savings, just think about them being cut into while your unemployed.
I have to admire the guy for being so optimistic, but it rarely works out that way...

I head up a medium sized Web Development company that specialises in Govermental website makeovers.
Attached, please find quotation for website that includes:-
* 45 Graphics * 73 Scans * A search function * 144 html pages * 666 animated gifs * Hyperlinks * A site map * Lots of Pornography & Games to make use of that Broadband we all love !
I hope you'll agree that the $1,000,000 development costs are very reasonable for such advanced technology.
We can also offer you a RedHat Linux server at a paltry $500,000
Your sincerly,
Mr. Alstons Back Pocket.

Your probably right.
The general public will be blissfully unaware and non-caring about RFID, that is unless someone points out how it can get out of control.
I suppose so long as there's strict legislation, for instance your 'tear off' tag idea, it won't be a privacy threat.
The supermarket trolley idea is one that as far as I can remember has been through trial runs with different technologoy and indeed it's a good idea - except of course, it will mean millions of lost jobs worldwide;)
What would be cool is an LCD built into the handle of the trolley that tallies up your purchases as you put them into the trolley.
I just can't see myself in the position of the nemesis, since I just don't care enough. To be a nemesis, you have to actively try to destroy something, don't you? Really, I'm not out to destroy Microsoft. That will just be a completely unintentional side effect.
If I could mod you down right now I would.
Down to "imbecile"
Cornered this artificial virus thing a long time ago - old news !
... had cornered that field of research ?
I find myself wondering at the validity of that statement for about 5 seconds.
Quite how one could be both a theare snob and star wars - ahen - person - entirely slips my well defined features.
my entire divx collection of "telly tubbies" will be unreadable in 2 years !
Nooooooo !
On a less serious note, if you must make CD backups for important data, make 2 copies and store them in different locations.
I need space for my divx screener collection dammit !

The best solution I've found is to have 15 metre mouse, keyboard and monitor cables.
You then simply put your computer into another room, such as the kitchen or even your garage.
Viola ! - no noise !
It also has the added benefit of making you get out of your chair every once in a while to put in a CD which is definately good for a geeks health !
Yes - I'm really not serious...
Sadly, I failed at being funny on this one.
I wish myself better luck next time !
And lo, let me preach unto thee the ten commandments !
...
Er - hang on a minute, my tablet just crashed
After reading this article, I really feel the need to migrate !
:-
Of course, if anyone could supply me with information on getting the following working under linux, I'd be very happy !
1. Microsoft Encarta
2. Microsoft Golf
3. Internet Explorer 5.0
4. Windows Media Player
5. Zonealarm
6. Adaware
7. Nortons Anti-Virus
I'd really love some help - I need these quality applications to run in a Linux box, otherwise I just can't migrate !
Arrhghgh !
Man, this just sounds so much like people wanting a matrix scenario !
It's wild.
I like it.

Having 99% replaced ie with mozilla all I can say is "who gives a shit !"
;)
It seems that microsoft has become disinterested in the browser, probably feeling that ie6 is as far as they need to go.
They couldn't be more wrong.
I think it's time I got all my work colleagues to switch - most of them wouldn't know the difference anyway

I can see this happening the same way as Europe boycotts GM food, to the point where supermarkets may actually state on the product :-
"This product does not contain any RFID tags"
RFID can be harmless - for instance, helping supermarkets judge thier stock better, tallying up popular products etc.
However, they are almost certainly going to be abused !

For such a helpful post, was that really neccessary ?
It's people like you who give Linux a bad name.
