    This 850Gb technology is vaporware for the moment. And even if they succeed, if the product come out late, say when HD are 20Tb and other competitors offer simillar products, then they have no serious advantage.

    Buying Iomega in the hope that this technology succeeds is pure speculation. I would wait until the products is seriously about to come to market, and is relevant.

    Professionals will continue to buy Adobe Photoshop because it is superior to Gimp, by a far margin according to people in the industry (Note: I never used Photoshop myself).

    Your local teenager might use Gimp instead of Photoshop, but that would not affect Adobe since that teenager would never had payed for Photoshop's licence in the first place.

    So I think that Adobe could do buisiness with Linux if Linux makes enough inroads in the Desktop market.

    I am thinking of moving my computer into the closet and have only USB input devices connected to a USB router and a long VGA cable. Since I seldomly have to access the computer (I insert a CD say, 1 every 4 months on average), that might be a good solution.

    And I live in Montreal, so heat generated in a closed closet would not be that much of a problem since my appartement is always cool, except for the hottest days of summers (I would then let the door open). But in winter, my computer is on 24/7 and it would simply generate heat that my appartement heater would generate anyway.

    Ahem, apt-rpm exist. You can use apt for RPMs. You also have yum.

    Myself, I have been "apt-get dist-upgrade"ing for a few years now.

    But it will cut cost for the IT departement. That is what the story is about. Now you are talking about the problem of other departements, i.e. training departement, office employees, etc...

    I do not like what I wrote above and I agree with your analysis, but in businesses you will often see one departement trying to save cost at the expense of others even if the overall cost for the business increases.

    But do not forget that if you have AC at the office, then you have two system fighting against each other, the computers that generates heat and the AC that tries to keep the temperature of the office low. This fighting might start to have a noticeable cost.

    I would like the old Netscape 4 "find bookmark" feature to come back. Organizing bookmarks is hellish since it went away.

    To be specific, I want to be able to "find" a bookmark within its folder, so I can also find related bookmarks or know where to store a new bookmark, beside the one I searched for.

    The aim is to make Japan more attractive to foreign tourists, who are often put off by the country's language barrier.

    Uh... the high cost of living might be a bigger problem? After all, people travel all around the world and language is not that big of a barrier.

    A collegue of mine told me that he had to pay $5 an apple when visting there. Granted, they probably do not grow many apples in Japan, but here in Montreal we do not pay $5 the Marocan tangerine.

    There is no real/easy solution to get the cost of living down in Japan. At least the article suggest that Japanese authorities acknowledge that cost is a problem. As they cannot do anything about it, they problably decided to attack the #2 reason. But I hope their expectations are not unreasonable because cost is the major problem, not language.

    And how many of the apps you find on the web come packaged for your distribution? More often than not, its a tar.gz file you will get. You would be lucky to put your hand on an RPM specifically built for your version of your distribution.

    What else is there to do? Take a long chair and take a tan while others are still scrambling?

    Some airlines have advanced the flights home so some tourists have no choice to leave soon. I suspect a few would have stayed and helped out if they could postponed their return flight. I know I would.

    My only concern staying there is for myself to catch one of those nasty diseases caused by contaminated water. And the fact that I would be one more person consuming precious resources like water...

    I do not have a DVD player. I do not rent much movies. I do however record a lot of TV shows. My old VHS does the job well. Alternative recording devices are still way to expensive for my taste to replace my VHS and VHS offers "good enough" quality for my needs (when I record a TV show, it is for its content, not the quality of the images).

    I bet because of the recording needs, VHS will still be with us for a while. Yes, other technologies are comming and gaining market share, but they still have a lot to go (in price) for VHS to disapear from households.

    I hope they are "warmer" than fluorescent lamps. I hate the pure white light that they emit. I like a light with a yellowish hue. That is why I still prefer incandescents bulbs, despite all the advantages of fluorescent lamps.

    I wonder why they do not paint fluorescent tube with a yellowish hue to make them warmer. I bet if they would do this, they would conquer a greater market.

    So, if DVD burners are so cheap, why are DVD recorders, those used to replace the aging VHS, so expensive? If you can get a DVD player for $50, lets assume we replace the DVD unit with a burner, wouldn't the price for a DVD recorder be around $120 instead of the $300 they sell now? Surely its not the software for recording that is so expensive...

    If we stop pushing out green house gases nothing will change, environmently speaking. The % of CO2 in the atmosphere will still remain at the current level and will take decades to come down.

    If we stop pushing out green house gases, we stop agravating the situation. We do not improve the current situation. The pollution already released will remain. The issue is not about improving the situation, but stoping its deterioration.

    The reason why you have so many problems with storage is political, not technical. We (earthlings) have lots of space for storing it. Even if we started building many more nuclear plants, space for storage would not be a problem on a technical point of vue. Its pure politics. There could easily be 20 Yucca Mountain in the US.

    Oh... BTW, the nuclear waste is solid, and can be stored in a super strong form of glass. Plus, if you store them in mines, you can check if any water is seriously being contamineted. Just keep the containers away from ground pressure (like in chambers in mines) and they would last far longer than the radiation they will emit.

    I am entitle to a good environnement. I would have no problem with people having SUVs if they had no impact on me. However, they do. They pollute more, causing my health to fail earlier than necessary. They produce more green house gazes which will force many people living in the Pacific islands to become refugees when the water levels start rising. Because they require more gas, demand for gas is higher than it should be, causing me to pay for gas at a price that could be less. They are unsafe for people driving other cars.
