What is the financial situation of SCO? Does anybody knows? I searched for SCO on yahoo quotes, but did not find it, so I assume its a private company.
I wonder how long can SCO survive, how much cash reserves it has. Maybe they are gambling a quick settlement or a buyout, but if IBM calls their bluff and goes to court, could SCO run out of cash and die? It this a last resort tactic?
And are there any reported customers that decided to abandon SCO products because of the events? Can such a position scare potential customer? How much does their stand in this matter hurt their business?
True, but the american dollar has now for the first time a serious competitor. A lot of money is being transfered from American to Euro because of the worldwide anti-american sentiment. I just heard this morning on the radio that many saudis invested in America are pulling their money out, buying Euros and investing in Europe, because they despise the security measures applying to them. And for sure, many islamic people now have an alternative and switching to Euro.
I still believe that the US will remain the all mighty, but its not going to be as poweroff as it was in the past. I think that you can now travel pretty much around the world with Euros and they will be accepted.
A bit off topic, but has anybody got the numbers regarding the federal surplus and deficits for 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003 (no need to be precise, I am just curious). And what do the budgets look like in all the 50 states? Are most of them running deficits or surplus?
Here in Canada, since a few years practically all provinces and the federal is running either a surplus or come even. Radical change since the 1990's and I think that the benefits are starting to pay off with our economy still rolling despite's the US lack luster performance. Hey, our dollar crossed the $0.72US today, the highest level in the passed 5.5 years. Still, we are concerned about the state of the economy of our biggest partner.

But then, there was an outcry from the population. People gave to the red cross for the 911 victims and wanted the money to go only to them. The red cross reversed their decision and all the money went to the 911 victims. I find it sad, because probably many families already had some life insurances (unless they are not covered for terrorist attacks...) and they could have lived well afterward even if they got less money. Ok, what would the impact of releasing helium into the atmosphere be? Yes, helium is an inert gas, but over a millinium, could helium account for say, 5% of the atmosphere? Could oxygen levels, as a percentage of air, fall? Can helium contribute to the green house effect, or counter it? What color will the sky become? Are tenors an endangered species?:)
Anybody has calculations on how much helium is expected to be produced worldwide when fusion becomes commercial?
Why would we content with helium as output? Ok, as a first step, lets get there first, but would it be relatively easy to produce heavier elements than helium? Elements which are rare and expensive to mine?
Ah yes... and then any application written by an americain that ignores the locale while barf at the comma returned by the numeric pad. So now Calc will work, but some other apps will not.
Unfortunatly, since many apps under linux ignore locales, this is not a good solution. The better one would be an item in the preference to setup the function of the KP_Decimal within Calc.
In a perfect world, the OS should take care of this. But the world is not perfect, and we need a solution now.
You know, marketing wise, they do not have their priorities right. They are pushing a spreadsheet for which the numeric pad is useless for a big chunk of the world, yet put out an SDK. I would put the efforts on the numeric pad issue first.

All people using the following locales are affected:
Afrikaans, Basque, Catalan, French (all except Switzerland),
Galician, Italian, Portuguese (Portugal), Serbian (Latin) and
Spanish (all variants). This list might not be complete.
Now try to convert someone using Excel to use Calc by telling them that they can not use the numeric pad anymore...
Mmm... regarding point 1, are you sure they could not close it?
I thought that as the copyright owner, you can change the license whenever you want. What has been released as GPL remains GPL, but if you do any new developpement, it falls under your new license, which can be closed.
The one thing I do not understand, what happens if other people contributed to the project while it was under the GPL? Do you have to remove their part of the code to relicense it?
mysql is good example of twin licences for the same code. But what are the implications and restrictions to go on like so?
Coal is the worst of all: not only does it pollute on a scale normally only seen in nightmares, it even produces more radiation than fission! (All carbon is slightly radioactive, which is how carbon-dating works; when you burn coal by the truckload, all the little bits add up to more than the small amount of uranium used in fission plants.)
Do you have any links on the web to confirm what you are clamming? I never heard of that, and I am skeptic, but hey, I have an open mind...
CFCs are a catalyst in high atmosphere, breaking down the fine layer of ozone protecting us.
Although a catalyst, which means that in theory one molecule of CFC could destroy all the ozone layer, each molecule actually destroys an average of 150 000 ozone molecules before being destroyed or combined with another componant.
CFCs are terrible for the Ozone layer and leakage is to be avoided at all cost, thus the ban. Ozone is an unstable gaz and when leaked, it will break down relatively quickly and is not a catalyst, so it does not accumulate overtime at ground level. Its like carbon monoxyde. A little leakage is not a big deal. And since it cost to produce Ozone, you bet that most farmers will ensure that there is minimum leakage in their silos.
You should have said "much more friendly", but not "very friendly", for its not friendly enough to get that high mark.
Remember, Carbon dioxide is what causes global warming in the first place, so its not clean fuel (remember the Kyoto protocol?). However, the solution is much better than many other alternatives, so we agree on that point.
In modern games, I would class Tribes 2 as one of the most shamefull game. Its my favorite game and I play it often, but it is shamefull because it crashes so often (Unexecpected Exception occur too often). Sierra released many patches, but did not seam to have been able to correct the problem...
Great game, great design, bad implementation. Any other games out which crash often?
I remember reading/hearing that the reason why we remember so few from our early years is that there is a hypothesis which states that our memory forgets in the younger years to protect our sanity.
You see, a young kid goes through very rough traumatizing experiences (falling down, being psychologically hurt when mother says no or leave for a few hours, etc...) Off course, these are benin experiences for us, adults, but for a new, undevelopped brain, they are tragedies. If we would remember those experiences, we might have developped some psychological problems. Forgetting our younger years would help us keep our sanity until the brain is well formed.
As I said, its a hypothesis I heared somewhere. If anybody got a link to this, please share it with us.
Would you guys have pointers to start with eclipse? I downloaded and tried the IDE, but I would like to learn more on how to use SWT, but I could not find any doc on SWT (API, tutorial) on www.eclipse.org. Its probably there, but could not find it. I find that there should be more "Quick start/pointer" document on that site.
Maybe you have books to recommend. Please provide any helpfull info you got (libraries to suggest, tricks, etc...) that would help a newbie to jump start quickly on this platform.

I would not want my wash machine cost an extra $30 for electronics so it can warn a repair service which will charge me $70 to fix a problem where my water is slightly more warmer than it should and cost me only $3 more per year of electricity. And if my wash machine has a serious defect, I will find out the old way by hearing or seeing what is going wrong; no need of a computer for that.
And if you want to connect appliances to the Internet, either you use the electric grid for data transmission (if available) and you must pay for it, or you connect the appliances to your ethernet network (assume you have ADSL internet). How many of you have houses with ethernet near the wash machine? How many will drill holes through your walls to get ethernet to your wash machine?
The suggestion is feasable technically, but not practical. It won't be widly deployed. Same thing with GPS. I do not want to pay more for a GPS in my car; I do not get lost that often.
I do not want my appliances to be intelligent because the more complex they are, the more the chances of failure and the more they cost at purchase and for maintenance. I like my wash machine as it is, as my refrigerator.
Having electrical appliances connected to the internet are certainly not killer apps, and that is why they will fail on the market (unless these appliances provide actual browsing capabilities on the internet, like on a refrigerator or a microwave; some people might actually want this).
