Mod me down, but I'm always surprised by the amount of hate US has against the talibans.
Come on, the talibans try to free their country from foreign occupation, and they believe that their cause is right. They are warriors, not kamikazes that kill innocent people by exploding themselves. In France, this was called "Resistance".
BTW, what are the US troops doing in Afghanistan after all these years ?
Suppose that a company found the cure for AIDS, does that mean they will sell it only to the highest bidders ?
Millions of people are dying, but you'll only save the richest ones ? I question your ethics !
Instead of selling their exploit (I imagine that hackers will easily pay for this, since they make money from exploiting such security holes), they should disclose the exploit in 30 days. This will make help them to be known, and may attract clients, and they can provide it to their customers meanwhile.
My previous company had to fix the performances of a big french operator. Their SMS system was buggy and slow as hell. If I remember correctly, it's always slow, with a limit of 100,000 messages per hour. This also explain why in Taiwan, new year's messages arrive with a delay of several hours.
Because Microsoft's largest customers are business; and businesses don't care about spending huge amounts of cash to make their intranets standards compliant. They want things to continue to Just Work. In this case, why will the next Microsoft update force IE7 for all users ?
Don't tell me that 100% of the sites that work with IE6 work with IE7 !
Microsoft is not about to drop compatibility with billions of pages that unfortunately rely on IE6-specific shortcomings and rendering quirks These 'billions' of pages are broken, or will be definitely broken in a few years, so I don't understand your point, except if you intend to use only Microsoft's software for the next 20 years, and we are not sure what will be the most used browser next year.
The problem is that Microsoft want to keep compatibility with its own old buggy browsers, and in the same time, they try to kill their old software (Windows 2000 died recently).
Why not simply drop the compatibility now ? This will force people to upgrade much faster...

*Porn might be one of the few genres that DON'T benefit from high-definition. It's so true !
From the article on page http://www.cbc.ca/technology/technology-blog/2007/01/highdefinition_reality_intrude.html:
Apparently, the sharp images are revealing every last flaw, wrinkle and detail of the performers, leaving many them feeling a little too exposed. Even makeup and creative camera angles can't hide some of the wrinkles, blemishes or oddities, spurring those in front of the lens to embark on diet and exercise programs -- and in some cases more plastic surgery. The less resolution, the more fantasy.
Sorry, but if you don't spend at least $1000 on a computer for basic surfing, you are not fashionable. Of course, brands (Dell, Hp, etc...) are the only options. I'm still waiting for Vuitton's PCs, of course with full accessories !
Why not using a virtual machine ?
For example, you can undo the disks after a browsing session, this way, your virtual computer is always clean.
Or you can browse insecure sites in the virtual machine, and the secure on your computer.
Let's take an AIDS analogy:
- when you sleep with somebody you don't trust, you wear a condom
- when you sleep with someone you trust, you don't need a protection
2008 will the year of cheap laptops (XO and Asus EEE are below $300).
Everybody will be able to afford a computer at this price. The problem is that Microsoft's OSes is very expensive and need a lot of power to run (both with CPU speed, RAM and harddisk).
When they started working on Vista, Microsoft did bet that in the future everybody would own a supercomputer.
Today's situation shows that they guessed wrong, and that's why they are trying desperately to refurbish their old OS.
I think they made another error, since Win98 is more suitable for such computers, but they stopped maintaining it (it will be too expensive to maintain).
Note that when the hardware is cheap, the software needs to be cheap, since people won't pay an OS that costs 10% of the hardware's price !
This story reminds me of a similar bug.
When I worked at Cryo, one of our game DEMOS, which was released in a french game magazine, overwrote the harddisk bootsector (I don't have more details).
It was quite an unfortunate bug.
Even when you encounter a small bug (and I did discover some !), it's really unbearable, since the browser cannot be patched, and also you cannot report a bug to the IE team.
Don't forget that they have access to all the IP logs.
Since they are able to locate people from their IP, they will be able to find the people behind the blogs (I'll let you guess what they do to their opponents).
It's a known manipulation technique used by Scientologists: never defend, always attack.
When you cannot shut your opponents, keep attacking them. If you have more resources, the opponent will eventually break or stop.
It's a sad day for Russia's democracy, and democracy in general.
Having worked with Eidos several years ago (on the game Omikron The Nomad Soul), this is no surprise for me.
Eidos only got one huge hit these last 10 years: Lara Croft.
They are trying desperately to get a new hit, and it's not as obvious as it may appear.
First, nobody speaks about Lara Croft anymore, since the game technology has much improved since its first release, but LC was always a step behind.
Secondly, the good independent studios don't sign easily with such editors (they prefer Sony, Microsoft or EA).
Now, let's suppose that you are in place of Eidos' bosses.
Your only Christmas' hope is this game (since all your other games are worst than this one).
You may have invested something like 1 to 10 millions of dollars on its development.
The advertisement budget is equal to the development's amount.
You cannot miss Christmas' sales, since it's the moment of the year where you get all the money.
You know that your game is not terrific, but its note will be between 7/10 and 8/10.
A known critic gives you a 6/10, because there are tons of better games that are also noted 7/10.
I think it's normal to protest, but I think it's abnormal that gamespot fires the critic.
Eidos should listen to these critics and try to:
- find better development studios
- stop trying to concentrate your game design on charismatic characters. Concentrate on making fun games ! Lara Croft is the past.
- stop throwing money in magazines/sites where they get bad scores
Finally, such methods will only alienate gamers, and paying for good critics won't sell more games if the game is shitty.
It sounds to me that Eidos is in particular trouble now.
10% of the price cannot be compared with 2% of the price (when the computers were more expensive), or 0% of the price (for Linux).
When you want the cheapest computer, you don't put $30 of software on it (and with $30, you get only a bare OS with no software installed !).
Also, these computers are not meant to run the bloated versions of Office, they are much more similar to portable phones, but with a nice keyboard and the power of a real computer. The screens are small, so you cannot use large resolutions either (Vista needs a large resolution to be comfortable).
Microsoft has yet to release an Office Lite, with less features, but it contradicts Microsoft's policy of adding more and more functionalities into its products (thus increasing software's price).
In fact, I don't see Microsoft reducing their prices, given the initial cost of their products.
2008 is seeing the birth of laptop computers below $300: XO, Asus EEE, and I guess some new will appear soon.
Vista alone is almost more expensive than the hardware !
Microsoft was a good alternative when computers did cost $1500, but now the price is just too heavy.
But they really can't win when the hardware is cheap.
If they keep remaining in the high performance market (which seems their belief, see DirectX 10), they'll lose their market share in 2 years, along with Dell !

It may be free, but you'll be too ashamed to ever put it on !
Come on, your logic is flawed !
Suppose that a company found the cure for AIDS, does that mean they will sell it only to the highest bidders ?
Millions of people are dying, but you'll only save the richest ones ?
I question your ethics !

If you have any power in your company, just try to force uninstallation of Outlook.
Outlook 2007 generates large mails, with plenty of RTF parts and weird attachments (especially when you put pictures in your mail).
Oh, and tell them that they won't receive a phone from Nokia or money from Bill Gates if they forward their mail to 100+ people (cf hoaxbuster.com).

Since I have a pretty rare name, I created a Google alert with my name.
I receive around one mail every week.
I guess this makes me a continuous self-googler since 2 years.

I remember reinstalling Windows XP SP1 on a computer a few years ago.
While downloading SP2 with Windows Update, the computer kept crashing with weird errors in less than 10 minutes.
It took me a couple of minutes to realize that my computer was attacked by Sasser, because I first believed it was due to driver problems.
I think this will reduce even further the natality in rich countries.
On the contrary, in the poor countries, human reproduction will continue to grow at an exponential rate.
Sincerely, I just hope the software will NEVER be written by Microsoft, since a bug will be deadly (at least for men's parts).
Yes, and I read Viagra. It's time to go to bed !
Currently, Dilbert contains material related comics.

Mozilla has 52 in comparison.
