  3. Dialogue on Firefly Lives - New Comics in 2008 · · Score: 1

Nice to see Firefly in the headlines again. I liked the series, got it after hearing people on slashdot continuously talking about it ;) It is something totally different for a sci fi series, not that the cowboy part of it appeals to me. It's different because it's the first (that I've seen) that bothers about the little guy, the white trash, the petty crooks and FINALLY the deal with weapons in space making sound. And there's something surreal about the way the way the ship moves, the shots of it are amazing, if you've grown up on generic Trek you'll be blown away by the way space flight is shown here. Easily it's greatest strength. The one thing that doesn't appeal to me is the occasional crappy dialogue, the chinese swear words are inspired and great, it's the english bullshit that's weird. There's no way to explain it but as "geek humor" in a bad sense. It's not intelligently obscure, it's unnecessary, sounds stupid and it just damn well derails a good moment. Luckily that sort of "You would do my honour a great honour by engaging me m'lady" crap is completely overshadowed by the good parts of the series. If they fixed that, Firefly would be perfect. Well, that and the overt renaissance fair style sex talk. And yeah, comics suck. Here's to a tv series.

So I open it up and something falls out....it was a cockroach that just fell out and then it became clear what happened when I saw the leg soldered to the circuit board with burn marks around it...

I look at the prices on your cell phone there in the US and go WTF. On average you get that loads cheaper than here in India but then I see all the caveats and wonder if that's really worth a lower one time price. You get cellphones that actively work to monopolise a certain provider, here's looking at you Apple. You pay to receive sms' which I've never heard of. Hell, here you can even get a plan where you a pay an amount and get a lifetime of incoming calls and sms. You can't make calls except to good ol' 112 but no more phone bills. Our government is pretty damn good with all this stuff actually. We've got caps on the maximum they can charge, we're even working on a law that makes it mandatory for phone companies to keep the numbers the same when you switch companies. Note: WHEN. I've been used to sim cards since forever, I didn't know things like 2 year lock-ins even existed. We have a good ol' company that sells cdma phones whose numbers you can't change but people get those for either theft prevention (where not being able to change the number is a feature) or because they're dirt cheap. No decent phone would lock you to a vendor not even the competing cheap ones. All this regulation while there are about 5 major service providers, each competing to go below the prices of the others while keeping their services good. Then again, one of them just got bought out by Vodaphone so perhaps we'll get a taste of all that soon :)

If he did go a college and learn his skills there this is a massive failing on the part of education system to be unable to get jobs for those qualified for them. I wouldn't be too surprised since I've seen plenty (almost all) education based on how well you can memorise and spit out something rather than innovate. The dumbass rote learners get jobs and the creative people are sunk unless they adapt.

  18. Re:Motivated Youth on Teen Hacks $84 Million Porn Filter in 30 Minutes · · Score: 1

I think parents need to keep 'trying' to stop kids from watching porn, even if they believe it's 'alright' and they did it when they were younger. Good point, I think so too as long as it's not enforced to the point you beat the shit out of them if they're caught.

How would you feel if your Dad or Mum came up to you and said "Heya sonny...here's 20GB of my best stuff. There's some crazy shit in there." Imagining the most liberal possible answer to be, "But dad it's not HD, keep your low res crap"

It's just like teenage sex - I find people who's parents are like "Yeah, it's alright, go for it!" tend to be the guys who just fuck every girl they find, with no relationships and no respect. The guys who go and do it secretly, while still feeling a bit of guilt due to the fact they're parents'd kill them, still maintain some moral ground on the situation. Even though they don't feel its wrong.
Morality through hypocrisy? Sounds like a recipe for Ted Haggard. That's not a very moral ground to have. I think it has to be made clear that the objectionable part is 'no respect' and not the 'fucking every girl they can find' part, what if the girls also wanted a casual thing? Sex doesn't have to always be tied to a relationship.

If kids start doing that kinda stuff with parental support, they may start to get into the mindset that they can do whatever the hell they want, and they'll still have parental support. No, they'll find they have parents that don't make them feel ashamed of their bodies and have morality actually based on not hurting people. Cosistency is key.

Of course, you can always argue if people get used to 'going behind their parents back is alright' it could become a bad thing too, but like, I tell my parents everything almost everything I do, even if it's against their wishes - EXCEPT stuff I do with my girlfriend
Actually a very good way to deceive them by making them think you tell them everything. I do that myself.

But I think it's a balance. Putting net-nanny software and filters is a bit much, but telling kids its okay to watch porn is something else. It needs to be in between- being taught to be respectful of your partner whether it's a one night stand or a wife and not being ashamed of your body or its desires Fixed for ya.
