I know that someone like me is rare around here, but I like IE. It does what I need it to, does it quickly, and does it easily. It doesn't have tabbed browsing (which I despise), and I never have to worry about sites not working correctly. I have properly configured my security settings, and run The Proxomitron for pop-up blocking, ad filtering, and other miscellaneous features.

I've tried the alternative browsers, but I honestly just like IE the best. I really have no reason to switch.

Why do they bother wasting screen real estate?

It's really just a matter of preference. Personally, I like the look of IE better when large icons and text labels are both on. I also prefer a double-sized taskbar/quick launch/system tray. Maybe it's a waste of space, but I like it a lot better this way.

Of course, I'm running at 1600x1200 on a 19" monitor, so to me screen real estate isn't quite as precious as it is for some people...

Soon, I'm guessing. I'm sure it won't be too long before the recording industry realizes that now since everyone has a CD-player, it's time for a new "high-tech" format to get people to adopt. Of course this will raise sales, since people will buy the stuff they already own over again in the new format because it's "new and improved!"

    Not at first!

See, first they need to get a lot of people to adopt it, so they'll keep prices somewhat low. Then, they'll start phasing out CDs like what was done to cassete tapes. THEN they'll raise the prices once everyone has started buying them and CDs are considered "obsolete".

  7. Re:Why is this a problem on Labels Find New Method of Payola · · Score: 1

The problem comes when they start decreasing "normal" radio and increasing "ad" time, where that "ad" time is just music that was paid for. This gives anyone with a large pocketbook an advantage over anyone who can't afford to pay to get their song as an "ad" since the paid-for songs can be played anytime, but the unpaid-for songs can only be played in the (decreasing) "normal" time.

Of course, the point is pretty moot since 99% of stations only play RIAA music anyway.

Seriously, guys, if you're talking to a world audience it's so much more convenient if you use UTC. Everyone knows how to convert UTC to and from their local time; it's considerably harder to convert to and from some bizarre local time half way round the planet.

I'd be willing to bet that there are far more Slashdot readers who know how to convert from PST than know how to convert from UTC. Hell, I bet a good portion of people who read that didn't even know what you were talking about when you said UTC.

But maybe I'm overestimating the percentage of the Slashdot audience that is North American.

Maybe, but it hasn't exactly been positive news. People who didn't know much about Linux and heard about this whole SCO debacle are probably even LESS likely to want to switch over now.

Obviously, anyone who has had the situation explained to them (and actually understands the explanation) will think differently, but the average Joe User will see the uncertain history/future as another reason not to switch over. The thing that sucks is that we as consumers really have no way of knowing how much of our information is being given away like this since companies don't usually have anything posted about what they do with old hardware.

In fact, I'd wager that there's at least 10 times as much free software for Windows than there is for all other OSs combined.

You do have to pay the initial cost for Windows, but there are MANY ways to make that cost smaller. Buy it used, buy it bundled with a new PC, if you're in college sometimes you can get it for very cheap or free, etc.

Of course, this is assuming you're talking about a desktop PC and not a server. (Although MS would like to try and convince you that they're cheaper in that respect as well ;) )
