IMHO Ruby seems to have a "quirky" syntax. I checked it out for a short period of time and was thinking about adding it to my list of programming languages. I just don't care for the syntax. I could care less about it being interpreted, etc, it's the syntax that's killing it for me. I come from a C/Perl/Java background, and Ruby just seems too different I can't tell whether it's work taking the time to learn or not.
But, that being said, I really like Eclipse and use it for my Java coding. Maybe I'll give Ruby another shot since I can play around with it in Eclipse.
Final cost, as of January 2005, was $80/barrel ($1.90/gal).
Getting oil from shale is a little better, but not too much. I recently watched a show on Discovery (or the Science channel, something or other) about how they are doing something similar in Alaska. They're processing a sand-like material for oil. Basically they are grinding it, and "soaking" it to cause the oil to separate to the top, then scraping it off and sending it off to be processed.
The hardest thing about this process is that it's hard on the machinery. Pumping this sandy sludge quickly through pipes wears them out very fast. Processing plants have to be shutdown for repairs often to replace worn out pipes.
It's not just weak internationally, it's also weak in a lot of US locations. My neighborhood isn't even shown correctly (it has streets coming into my neighboorhood that don't even actually connect to it), and on the arial view it's still completely undeveloped with no houses. My neighborhood has been developed for the last 5 years.
Google maps on the otherhand shows my complete neighboor correctly WITH houses.
I know I'd rather have some options when it comes to software. I use Nikon's commercial software, Nikon Capture, and it's very, very good...but competition is always a good thing.
There is some competition, is there not? Check out "Capture One DSLR," it supports the RAW format for quite a few Nikons including the D70.
> "hundreds of years earlier but we have better technology than the first guys"
I really think that sums up my problem with the show. I like Enterprise.. flame me now.. but my biggest problem with the show is that right there. There just doesnt seem to be a logical flow from how the federation goes from Sam Beckett captaining a starship, to...captain...kirk...going...where...no... ahh you get the point.
Depends on what you want to do. If you want a media center to handle video and audio files then Freevo sounds like a good solution.
But for me.. sorry.. Freevo is useless. If they're going to play off the "TiVo" name by calling it Freevo it should be able to handle timeshifting of live TV.
If I cant pause/rewind/fast-fwd live TV then I'm not touching it. If they ever figure out how to add that functionality then I'll take a look. They're currently "working on it" but they've been doing that since I looked into it a year ago.
I recently made the jump to satellite radio and I agree that I cant stand to listen to broadcast radio anymore.
That being said.. deciding between XM and Sirius was quite difficult. I could care less about NFL, MLB or Howard Stern. They both offer roughly the same types of channels.
What led to my decision? As of the end of 2004 Sirius had 1 million subscribers, XM had 3.1 million. I went to XM due to a larger subscriber base.
There is... you just have to keep hitting the damned next button about 50+ times before you get to it. When they get done rating all the different VOIP providers (2 freakin next buttons for each review... morons) they move on to talking about "free" VOIP services. The first is dialpad, then skype.
Can you do me a favour, if it is a joke put in a smiley:) Oops - probably should have included that;)
I did not mean to include all Americans at all, and if that is how you (or anybody else) read it, I am truly sorry. Great - some people tend to share a common view for all Americans.
To this point I am afraid I cannot concede. Corelation does not imply causality. Sure we haven't been attacked by anyone in all the years that you have been our neighbor..but you indirectly (and the OP directly) seem to be saying this is because you have been protecting us. OK I suppose I can agree with that. There's been no need for the US to have to step up and help Canada with any military issues.
Your point about economic trade is valid, but remember it goes both ways. I have three words for you..softwood lumber tariffs. True - I guess I should have also included a Canadian import example.
I don't think I called Americans fat and lazy, I don't even think I implied it OK I suppose I inaccurately included you in a large portion of non-US (and some US) individuals who think we're all fat and lazy:)
I don't think we will ever see eye to eye on this, so we must do the rational thing and agree to disagree. Agreed:) Although I think I can understand your viewpoint a little better after a rational exchange of ideas (not to say you were being irrational btw.. but the original AC's post seemed a little irrational).
BTW I am sorry your post got modded down. It certainly didn't deserve it any more than mine did... It got modded down!? You bastard!!!:) See a joke! Actually I didnt notice that it was modded down. I show a flat score of 1.. so no biggie.
Ooops - wasnt logged in. The above comment was obviously posted by me. And again let me make sure I make it completely clear.. no I was NOT the original AC that posted this comment. I do not share his strong views that the US is above everyone else and all other countries should be kissing our asses:)
"we don't want your fuckin help, Canada has build a great reputation as being a friend to the entire world"
Sure - you don't think you need it now. But when the shit hits the fan guess who you'll be calling. If you're such a friend to the entire world then why would you need a military at all!? You could just "Eh?" and "Aboot" your way out of conflict.
"BTW, Canada was in WW2 from pretty much the begining"
The war went from 1939 to 1945. From 1939 to 1941 the Canadians sent troops over to England to train and prepare for an invasion by Germany. Their first major contact with the enemy was in Hong Kong against the Japenese where they received a major ass pounding.
Guess what date that was? The US officially entered the war on December 8th, 1941 (a day after Pearl Harbor). Guess what day the Japanese attaked the Kai Tak airport in Hong Kong where the Canadians first got into the action? December 8th, 1941.
So shut your damned hole.
The Canadian army didnt do shit until the US entered the war. Then AFTER that they only provided support to the allies. Case in point.. Sicily.. the US and British closed in from the west and north.. the Canadians were sent in to clean out the Germans who were fleeing from them. Then the Canadian army withdrew their troops into reserve while the Americans and British entered Sicily and took it back from the Germans.
So anyways.. then in 1945 the allies are preparing for a full scale assault in the Pacific.. and I quote from the Veterans Association Canada:
"Canada, too, prepared for the assault. Nearly 80,000 Canadians volunteered to join the Pacific forces and began concentrating at nine stations across Canada in July 1945. Canadian naval participation was also to have been impressive: 60 ships, manned by 13,500 men. However, the war was over before this help was needed. President Truman of the United States had made the fateful decision to use the atomic bomb."
Bang. End of war. So get your damned facts straight. Repeat after me... "Thank you America!"
So all you anti-American slashdotters.. flame away. I dont want to sound like I'm belittling the efforts of Canadians in WW2. It was a combined effort by all the Allies.. but dont get on your high and mighty horse putting down the US as a whole just because you dont agree with the decisions of the present-day US government. There are many Americans who may not agree with them... but damnit.. our soldiers are there dying to try and keep a little peace and give the Iraqis (and others) a little taste of freedom. They deserve some support and respect.
Yes. With the advent of always on connections, the existance of worms began an increase the likes of which has never been seen before. Taking a windows PC and plugging it into any network connection that isn't behind your own firewall runs the risk of an infected computer in 5 minutes or less. To safely surf the internet on a PC you need at least, a firewall, virus scanner, ad aware or similar program, and a decent popup blocker. To do the same on a mac, you just need, well, a mac.
As someone else mentioned.. SP2 now includes a builtin firewall. Also, Windows is just a bigger target for virii and spyware.. plain and simple. As for popup blocking or safer internet surfing.. I believe you are incorrectly drawing a relationship between SOFTWARE and the OS. Firefox is my default browser.. and I feel safer surfing around because of it.
Again the answer is yes. A windows PC by default would download and activate embedded programs and files in emails, causing mass spreads of viruses. Again, further indoctrination of users to safe habits is always useful, but once again, the mac doesnot run these by default, and even if it did, it couldn't execute them.
Again - you are basing your response on software and not the OS. Try Mozilla Thunderbird or some other email client other than Outlook and you don't have this problem.
This is once again another yes answer. Behavior on macs is very consistant through all applications, and simple basic features of the mac are shown to increase your effectiveness. It's probably not a largely noticeable difference in the application itself (infact I would argue that there's little difference if any there) but a system which lends itself to easily and effectively getting work done out of the box will shave time off of your activities.
Umm.. I believe the original poster was talking about spreadsheets, documents, etc. I.e. MS Office or OpenOffice type tasks. Since you can get both of these apps for either platform I dont see how one is better than the other.
The key word here is adequetely. With a mac, it can be performed well. Infact, all the basic tools are included with the system, not only Photo, but video, DVD production, music production, all part of the basic tool set.
Ding ding ding! I agree with you on this one.
You underestimate what time means to a home user. Every 2 seconds wasted searching for a feature that isn't where it's supposed to be, every minute spent deciphering an error, every 30 seconds spent doing a mindlessly repetative series of steps that should be automated is a large chunk of time, and that time adds up to frustration.
I assume you're relating this to photo editing like the original poster mentioned? If you are trying to compare iPhoto or something with any software bundled with XP then I agree. But any serious user uses Photoshop.. which again is available for both platforms.
Oh come on. I'll join in with most slashdotters and say this article is pretty crappy and I cant believe its front page news.
1) I have the exact same monitor 2) I have a USB laser mouse (Logitech mx700)
I've NEVER noticed any sort of "lag" with the mouse and I've had no problems playing FPS games.
Why immediately blame the monitor and post this to slashdot!? I also love how a lot of the anti-Dell slashdotters immediately jumped on the "dell-crap-is-junk" bandwagon.
I love this monitor.. it kicks ass. Worth every penny I paid for it (or well.. my company paid for it).
I have Bellsouth DSL and they're blocking port 25 incoming and outgoing for their DSL subscribers. I had a lengthy discussion with tech support about it and they said "thats just how it is". If you have Bellsouth DSL and you can still use port 25 - enjoy it now. The block is coming.
Well I have a blogger account (thats not very active) and there's no "ad" for gmail and I've received no notice from Google about any GMail beta account. Lies I tell ya!!
I think the AC means "cellular" service, not cingular. The service is provided by Verizon.
Why bother? Why bother!!!?? I have moving to do damnit, and I need those papers to pack my breakables!

How do they plan on verifying age? A little checkbox saying "I am at least 18 years old"? Like that's going to make any difference.

A dual one would help too. Oops.
Get a duel tuner DirevTivo, that'll solve all^H^H^Hmost of your problems.

Yeah - take a look at Hibernate. There ya go... high quality, free, object persistence for Java that works with most all major relational databases.
