    That should cover it.

Yes, VisiCalc was the first spreadsheet. But we were agog when Lotus announced it would advertise in the WSJ to the tune of one million dollars. I cannot overstress the excitement when we read about 1-2-3, it was like meeting a pretty girl who liked programmers (or so I imagine). We had hope.

Of course, I still don't know how to save my spreadsheet in CSV format with quotes around every column ... little help?

I see two problems. The DCMA does not prevent Edelman from trying to reverse engineer N2H2, but the software license does. So, the government can't go after him, but N2H2 can. Also, although Edelman can reverse engineer, N2H2 still has the copyright of the list of blocked sites, so Edelman would not be able to publish the list, which is one of the purposes of his research.

Edelman asked the court to permit him to a) ignore the license which bars reverse engineering, and b) ignore N2H2's copyright by publishing the web sites he discovered. The judge noted that Edelman hasn't actually done anything yet, and declared that the court is not in the business of handing out a "get out of jail free" card in case he ever does his research, and N2H2 seeks relief.

In civilized countries, there is a judicial system that enforces contracts. Is this the freedom you refer to? But this has nothing to do with capitalism, it is a function of government, under any economic system.
