A 22-year-old Norwegian named Niels Henrick Abel (1802-1829) and a 20-year-old Frenchman named Evariste Galois (1811-1832), discovered the impossibility of solving the quintic almost simultaneously in the 1820's.
If Abel was 22 when he made his discovery, that means he did it in 1824. If Galois was 20 when he made his, that means he did it in 1831. What if Galois actually discovered something else, something so powerful it could transport him seven years into the past, something like, oh,
Yes, VisiCalc was the first spreadsheet. But we were agog when Lotus announced it would advertise in the WSJ to the tune of one million dollars. (Cue the orchestra, release the laser-equipped sharks.) ("Orchestra", btw, is the word I misspelled in the 4th grade spelling bee.) (Not that I obsessively keep track of my failures, you know.) I cannot overstress the excitement when we read about 1-2-3, it was like meeting a pretty girl who liked programmers (or so I imagine). We had hope.
Of course, I still don't know how to save my spreadsheet in CSV format with quotes around every column... little help?
Even funnier is when one pretends to know Smith, then (mis)quotes Thomas Hobbes, from Leviathan: 'No arts; no letters; no society; and which is worst of all, continual fear and danger of violent death; and the life of man, solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short.'
Hey, I trained Barry Parshall to replace me! (I think.) He started in customer support... you can look it up.
If that had been my second job, I would still be there. (I hope.) I was fresh out of Purdue, didn't know how good I had it there. I learned so much. I would put that group of developers against any other, anywhere. And I agree, Kim Logan is the bomb; he was my second supervisor.
I was late to work & was trying to get dressed & review code at the same time. The laptop was on top of the dresser. I put the mouse in my pocket to tie my necktie. Then I turned around to get my shoes. The mouse was still in my pocket.
Amazingly, the only damage was a crack around one of the hinges. When I turned in the laptop, of course I said, "it was like that when I got it."
Now when will white males with bald heads be arrested for looking like terrorists?
When white males with bald heads start flying passenger planes into skyscrapers.
Once upon a time, the announcer would announce, "This is the end of our broadcast day. Please rejoin WWWW at 6AM." Perhaps this announcement followed an inspirational moment from the Reverent Billy Bob Cross, or the Navy Hymn, or the Star-Spangled Banner, complete with fly-over. If one were lucky, one had just seen the Late Movie, or the Late-Late Movie. Now, it Infomercials as far as the eye can see.
I see two problems. The DCMA does not prevent Edelman from trying to reverse engineer N2H2, but the software license does. So, the government can't go after him, but N2H2 can. Also, although Edelman can reverse engineer, N2H2 still has the copyright of the list of blocked sites, so Edelman would not be able to publish the list, which is one of the purposes of his research.
Read the court documents here. Edelman asked the court to permit him to a) ignore the license which bars reverse engineering, and b) ignore N2H2's copyright by publishing the web sites he discovered. The judge noted that Edelman hasn't actually done anything yet, and declared that the court is not in the business of handing out a "get out of jail free" card in case he ever does his research, and N2H2 seeks relief.
So I'm studying in the canteen in the basement of the dorm where lived for a year. I did this 3-4 times per week. It's about 1AM. Suddenly, the soda machine buzzes & poops out 6 cans of Coca-cola. Drinks around for everyone. Only time this ever happened.
Capatalism requires us all to give up freedoms in the form of agreeing to be ruled by a government so that certain rules (that restrict freedom) can be enforced so that capatalism can work.
I'm trying, but I can't think of any freedom that must be abridged if I live in a capitalist economy.
In civilized countries, there is a judicial system that enforces contracts. Is this the freedom you refer to? But this has nothing to do with capitalism, it is a function of government, under any economic system.
Execellent points, except... the vast majority of economic activity is generated by small businesses, not "large corporations". Almost all of those small businesses are owner-operated. Capitalism *is* the predominant model, at least in the US.
That's what I thought when I read the headline, "I wonder if they are sh or csh scripts."
Now that's a case mod I want to see!
If he hadn't banned stem cell research, we would be able to regenerate new limbs by now.
Wait. He didn't do that.
If he hadn't banned federal funding for stem cell research, we would be able to regenerate new limbs by now.
Wait. He didn't do that either.
If he hadn't done whatever he did, we would be much better off by now.
That should cover it.

So it must be true that human activity is increasing CO2 levels on Mars, right?

I share an office with another guy.
When he wants to tell me something, he IMs me.

The essential rights conferred by copyright law are:
1) the owner can make a copy, and
2) the owner can stop others from making a copy.
GPL preserves both. So which rights are surrendered?
I've been standing behind the elephant!
Oh no. I know the Greek alphabet, so I translated the text in my head. Did my brain violate the DMCA?

The wireless remote control.
A huge addition to my enjoyment of sport.
Can it generate enough electricity to run itself?

You are dying. Probably this event is way off in the distant future. Still, it is there.
Perhaps the recognition of this fact can jolt you into action. You *can* improve the life of your neighbors. Will you act? Why not?
