It's all a matter of perspective. I am from rural Missouri, USA and think nothing of having guns in the house. It is a normal part of life.
I remember driving back to my parents house late one night with my city born and raised girlfriend (now wife) and having some engine problems on my truck. We were out in the middle of nowhere so I pulled over into a farm field field entrance and proceeded to investigate. There was a house up the road a bit and soon the farmer came down to see what was going on. He was carrying a rifle.
I thought nothing of it and told him what was going on and that my father was on his way down to help us get the truck going again (turned out to be some loose screws in the carburetor). My girlfriend later told me she was totally freaked out because the guy had a gun. Two people in the same situation had two very different reactions.
The farmer told me he came down to check because he had been having trouble with rustlers trying to steal his cattle (yes, that still happens). It seems reasonable to me to take a rifle when investigating possible thievery on your farm at night.
I think my point is, you don't have to be living in "some sort of post-apocalyptic nightmare" to need a firearm. In some parts of the world they are essential tools.
That reminds me of a motherboard repair I did back in college (back when a 486DX4-100 was hot stuff). The BIOS would lose its settings when the PC was turned off, every time. The BIOS battery was fine, I even tried a new battery just to be sure. Since I had plenty of free time and no money I spent several hours tracing circuit paths off the BIOS chip. I eventually found a bad diode, ran to Radio Shack for a replacement and had a working motherboard again.:)
These days with all the surface mount components used on PCBs it is much more difficult to troubleshoot anything.
My company is a Dell shop. Dell supports Red Hat Enterprise products. End of story.
I do use Gentoo in a non-critical, monitoring role, but wouldn't dream of putting it into the core production group. Anyone who has dealt with a Dell PERC driver probably understands why.
Screen is quite useful. A real-world example is a cluster I am testing. I need to simultaneously run 32 different tests, each of which sometimes dumps useful info to the console. You can name a screen so I fire up 32 of them using a simple bash loop:
for i in `seq -w 1 32`;do screen -S NG$i;done
As each screen opens I fire up my test program and Ctrl-A + D to detach and the next opens, etc, etc. I now have 32 virtual consoles running tests in the background. I can tail the test program logfiles or I can reattach to a specific test to check console output. For example, to reattach to NG01 type:
screen -r NG01
Then I am popped back into my virtual terminal. Another quick example is remoting in to a server and running some long process such as an fsck. Fire up a screen, start your command and detach. It will happily run in the background and you can close your ssh session or whatever.
I have lived in the midwest all my life, Missouri to be precise. Nowhere have I run across any of your "most of these people". The only time I hear about wackos such as you portray is when a non-Christian rants about Christians. Perhaps I have been fortunate picking locales in which to live.
Could it be that you just have a different world view? Go to your local library and read some history books on moral decay and its effect on societal structure in the past. For example, the Greeks did the whole gay thing a couple thousand years ago, it's not a new issue. Perhaps the reading will shed some light on the position of the so-called wackos. You don't have to agree with that position of course. I don't agree with your position on Christians, but I respect your right to that view. It's OK if we don't agree.
On another note, you will most likely find yourself being taken more seriously if you avoid using words such as "bullshit" and "fuck" to make a statement or put forth an argument.:)

...than trying to explain random, senseless violence that has no perpose and is engaged in only by 'humans'.
Off-topic, but... Anyone who thinks "random, senseless" violence is only practiced by humans needs to spend about 2 minutes in a corral with a mean horse. Some animals, just like some people, are born with a mean streak. News Flash: Nature isn't perfect and pretty and clean.
I think one needs to realized that their are 285 million people in the US and somewhere are 20 million people on Canada. You do the math.
Not to mention the fact that a good-sized chunk of those 285 million people are in rural areas where not even *gasp* cable tv is available. Someone has to grow all that food in your grocery store you know...:)
This will get modded down as flamebait, but here goes...

The link above is to a standing offer (since 1990), anyone can present emperical evidence for the general theory of evolution and recveive 250,000 US dollars. I dare you to browse http://www.drdrino.com/ with an open mind and just think about it. Yes, I mean you.
I had to do something similar a couple of weeks ago. My solution was to play the RealAudion file and record it directly, using the wave/pcm as the source. This worked under Windows 2000, YMMV. It was quick, easy and worked great. The sound card is a cheap Sound Blaster 16 PCI, nothing fancy.
You will notice, however, that the finch is still a finch. It has not "evolved" but merely retained a certain characteristic or variation. Now if the finch turned into a fish and swam away from the island, then I would be impressed.

Yes, when I am managing more than the three servers in my basement I do like slocate.
the parent(s) decide they are old enough. IMHO
Take some responsibility for your kids, parents, it doesn't hurt as bad as you might think.
That is a rather simplistic view of religion. I suggest you spend some time at your local library reading about the religions of the world.

The database hardware was discussed, but what database software does Slashdot use today? MySQL?

They don't, they buy a phone with buttons.
Should all products be required to be accessible by the sight-impaired?

So what you're saying is you haven't applied any kernel security updates in almost 2 years? I hope this isn't a server facing the internet...
...at least not real soon.

You must be new around here...

Way to go guys! Must have been a beer shortage in Rolla for this much work to be done. :)
