Mozilla or even firefox is a heavier app than IE.

But how much of IE can you actually see when it comes to memory (or hard drive, for that matter) use? When you launch Firefox and look at its memory use, you're seeing the total amount of RAM that it uses. When you do the same for IE, you're only seeing part of the RAM it uses because there are components of the browser embedded within the OS. You would have to take into account the memory usage of those components too to get a fair comparison.

By that logic, you should be using IE. If you seriously looked at a somewhat modern build of Thunderbird compared to Outlook, you wouldn't dismiss T-Bird so quickly. There is absolutely nothing that Outlook Express does better than Thunderbird. Nothing. And in many cases, OE is worse than Thunderbird. IMAP support comes to mind. If you're talking about Outlook "proper" the only thing it has that Thunderbird doesn't is a calendaring module. But that goes against you're previous premise that developers should stick to one thing. And there's Calendering coming to Thunderbird eventually, anyway. It's not mature enough yet, but it is usable as long as your requirements aren't too great. But comparing the Email abilities of each app against one another, Thunderbird wins hands down.

    2. Clearly you haven't tried the Logitech Wireless Action Controller. There simply is no lag. It's a wonderful controller, second only to the OEM Dual Shock 2. If Sony can manage to create a wireless controller with the technical accumen of the Logitech WAC and the form factor of the DS II, they'd have just about a perfect controller. They'll have to supply controller ports for backwards compatibility, though. Not many people will be willing to shell out for another driving wheel if they just bought one for GT4.

    > Standardised MP3 support for in-game audio.
well then you have the problem that you need a harddrive, and of course this drives the cost up. Harddrives and video cards are the two items that haven't gotten cheaper over the years(video cards have gotten more expensive!).

Hard drives most certainly have gotten cheaper over time. But you don't necessarily need one for MP3 playback, though. A Memory Stick should work just fine.

    > Better data caching to reduce load times.
this is my biggest pet peeve. Or they could just put in a faster drive.

Supposedly the drive in the newer "Slim" PS2 is faster, but I'm not sure I've been able to notice a difference. It does support DVD-/+R, though. Some games actually make much better use of cacheing than others, exhibiting almost no load time at all once the initial game is loaded. Hopefully this can be refined even further.

    > Better surround-sound.
some games support dts(gtaIII vc) however i think it could be better because they don't support dts dynamically, but the do suport PL II very well. I think the next generation will have this wrapped up.

I'm right there with you on this one. Dolby Digital support would really be nice. The difference between PL II and true 5.1 Dolby Digital, even on an optical connection, is like night and day. Other than evolutionary (or hopefully revolutionary) graphics, this is the thing I'm looking most forward to in the next PS. Should be a no brainer, though.

(though, of course, it raises an interesting view..if you lack a religion..doesn't that become your religion? If you refuse to believe or acknowledge God, aren't you following a belief system?)

No. A lack of religion does NOT constitute religion. By definition. It's not like Atheists (in general) actively disbelieve God in the face of any evidence. On the contrary, the resounding lack of evidence is what drives us to the conclusion that there is no God. On the other hand, if God were to appear tomorrow in a manner that was indisputable, we'd (again, most of us) be instant converts. A religion implies a faith. And faith requires that one believes in something absent evidence. Given evidence, faith is no longer required.

I mean, is it really that much more efficient to have a particular library in a specific directory rather than in another specific directory? Wouldn't having a standard structure across all distros make development easier?

On the Desktop environments, though, I'd have to totally disagree. Gnome and KDE have pushed each other to be better faster than either would have done without the other. And you'll never get a consensus on which is the better environment. I've always been a KDE guy, but I've always thought that Gnome was prettier. The reason I started with KDE instead of Gnome was footprint. KDE was tighter and smaller and thus faster than Gnome. Apparently that distinction has gone as Gnome has matured, but I still use KDS because it's what I'm comfortable with. Others are Gnome zealots. And never the twain shall meet. It's good for the platform, though.

In addition, FFXII isn't due out for months still, and from all indications, the series is taking a dramatic departure gameplay-wise. To date, the only direct FF sequel is FFX2. True, there is a Kingdom Hearts sequel on the GB and another coming out for the PS2, but there was also fan interest in these, as well. The forthcoming "sequel" to FFVII is NOT an RPG, so though many fans would have liked to have seen an RPG sequel to FFVII, Square decided to go in a different direction. In short, Square has generally been giving the fans what they want, just not always in the form in which the fans expected. It's expected that when a company reaches a certain level of dominance in a field, there will be backlash against that company. Sometimes the backlash is warranted (Microsoft, EA) sometimes it's not. Thus far I haven't seen anything that warrants the backlash that Squenix is getting. However, if it's true that they're going in a mostly online direction, they'll lose a number of fans, myself included. I played FFXI for 9 months and if their future games are to be the endless level grinding fare that FFXI turned out to be, I won't be buying.

What you're talking about is exactly that minimum level of familiarity for a computer. You would never let your mother drive if she couldn't grasp the concept of the gas peddle vs. the brake pedal or if she couldn't figure out what the various street signs meant. If it was a problem, you'd find a way to teach her. These concepts are not difficult to grasp, but certain people take to certain types of learning better than other types of learning. Perhaps you should find someone (or you, yourself) that can figure out the way your mother learns best and apply that technique to teaching her the basics of desktop computing. Draw analoguous diagrams for the concepts involved. For instance, when attempting to explain the directory structure, you could use a drawing of a tree and all of its branches or (honestly this isn't meant as a sexist thing) take her to the kitchen and explain it by saying that the kitchen is the root directory, the drawers are file directories, the organizers in the drawers are subdirectories and the refridgerator is a system, or special directory. There IS a way to teach her these simple concepts, it's a matter of finding it. Of course, this assumes she wants to learn. That's paramount.
