I'm going to go out on a limb here and hazard a guess that if I said, 'NetBSD,' I would find out that they don't make motherboards that run NetBSD anymore, and that's why it runs on so much older and strange hardware?

That does sound like a better answer. It would also explain why it had to be kept to a narrow tube, thus making single person transport the only option. If it was some sort of beam, you would need to restrict the area, to focus the effects more easily.

Actually, I think Robert A. Heinlien's 'Stranger in a Strange Land' has prior art on this. They have something called a 'bounce tube,' which is replacing elevators for single person transport.
I like to help you young folks out. Makes my sub 120k user number heart feel young again. Also, I take every opportunity I can to plug Latin. I find it very sad that so many High Schools around the country are no longer offering Latin. My knowledge of Latin enables me to get a great insight into English, and an ever better one into Spanish and Italian. Latin should be everyone's second language, if only so they can know themselves.
I do speak Latin, and virvs, atleast in my dictionary, is indeclinable, like nil / nihil. Also, when the word is used in english, as a loanword, it is pluralised as viruses, not virii, which is just plain stupid, as for a latin word to end in double i it has to end in -ivs.
Son, let me tell you something about tin foil hats. You think you kids have it soooo tough these days. Back in my day we didn't have tin foil hats. We had to wear lead hats! And we liked it!

I think Empire is clearly right. America is moving into the last stages of an Empire, much like the British Empire did before it collapsed. These are the last, dying gasps of a once great society that has become everything that it stood against. The only way an empire can avoid civil war is to create wars elsewhere, which we're doing just as the British did, 'to protect our citizens and our interests.'
Formaldahyde crystals on hot plates in an air tight room will kill 100% of living creatures after 3 days of letting the room sit with the gas trapped inside it.
Or it could be due to an increase in the total number of users thus driving the number down by watering down the particular group, much as one can drive the proof of a mixture of alcohol down by including things that aren't alcohol.
