I guess it depends if they're talking about vanilla linux/windows installs. Usually anything I hear about NSA testing, they specifically talk about SE Linux rather than just a random distro.
Maybe these "(Stupid) useful $RANDOM tricks" would make at least 1 decent article for idle.slashdot.org? i.e. its not exactly front page news as such but it is definitely interesting to read and it is news for nerds/stuff that matters.
Its against the law to possess things like nmap.
So basically they can decide your now a terrorist and take action against you because you have scary hacktools.
I don't think they're worried about being tracked but rather that its a third party. It does seem silly but remember how they handled the outlawing of hack tools. Pure irrational thinking at its best:-S
Just tried it, (running kubuntu 8.04 LTS) didn't even acknowledge linux. Told me I should run it on windows for now but they will have a Mac version for me soon.
I can definitely see your point but many of us can still remember thin clients, so i guess the desktop isn't always everything. the desktop just seems to be handy at this point in time (and has for a while now) until we can get network speeds acceptable.
My Linksys router runs a Linux based software firewall. Absolutely. All firewalling equipment works at the same network level (session layer I think). Both the dedication and the physically separation between the device and the pc makes the big difference.
i.e. If you browse to a site that runs an arbitrary code exploit to turn off or crash your pc's firewall, its not going to affect the hardware based firewall at all.
I just wish that more quality games would get released from non nintendo distributers(the nintendo ones are fine). Wii sports is still great even though it was just the bundled promo, mainly because it was deliberately written to show every aspect of the controller. most of the non nintendo games feel entirely too ported and don't make use of the controller abilities. call of duty in particular feels like the gun sight is a analog joystick thats been poorly hacked to work with the controller as a last minute thought.

To his credit, at least he used a car analogy :-)
I agree, Don't Stop these articles.

If they have their online anonymity then how do they know it was linked to real-life violence....or is that just speculation?

What Intel Sticker? **Jedi Hand Wave**
:-)
very valid point though
and they said about building them from scratch too....Wait what did the article say again?
I read that title as AL not AI. :-)
My first thought was...Is there anything Al Gore can't do, after all he did invent the internet
we're not exactly talking about the most sophisticated users on these sites. Why wouldn't they prey on the obviously easy targets.
It might be easier to just use a different method. (PAM is very flexible after all)
I currently own a Fujitsu Lifebook U1010 running debian. The inbuilt fingerprint scanner (made by AuthenTec i think) works great with fprint http://www.reactivated.net/fprint/wiki/Main_Page/
I would assume that an off the shelf USB fingerprint scanner would work just as well and is much simpler
I first read it as Patient troll. I figured that he was prepared to be left waiting a while.
Damn straight.
I suppose they're going to assume that all blank media is used for copying music while they're at it.

my deepest sympathy for spilling your beer (Australian also).
Here's a good guide for repairing disk issues.

By the description given, they may as well blame Intel as well. It was their chipset that ran the code.
you see his website was hacked, so he researched it.
this automagically makes him a security researcher. very self explanatory really. his certificate is still in the mail.
so one day, TV might actually kill us. hmm.... I guess its bittorrent from now on for me.
so overheating and shutting off *is* a feature
maybe a hampster and a running wheel would work better???
i'm sure its not that hard to get 80 DVDs to fit into a 128-GB flash storage device.
I think the real question is "80 DVDs...will it blend?"
