I'm calling bullshit on this one. 42%? yeah right. Maybe parents checking up on their kid's habits but even then I can't see almost _half_ of the world's internet users using another person's account.
But that's the thing, the poll doesn't infer that it's all web users, just people that visit that website. The write up is incorrect.
This is so lame I'm having a hard time not laughing. Is this the best we can get? How does this tripe pass the test to be posted on slashdot, and not in the idle section?
I think they are talking about fruit and veggies you bag mate, the ones without any stickers. There is no associated code on the bags and the attendant has to know the type of food before weighing it.
This device could help identify the various types that look similar. Although I gotta wonder how it's gonna handle the difference between a McIntosh and a Red Delicious apple. From the article it seems that it will just identify "apple" and then give the user choices. Which makes me wonder how much more useful this identification will be over the typical self-checkout you see in grocery stores.
Yes, given your example I wouldn't let my kid take these drugs, if the side effects overshadow their life. But the drugs that are banned go beyond ones like steroids and into the realm of performance enhancement.
For instance Creatine. Would I let my daughter take it if she wanted to use it to better her work outs? Scientifically I have no reason not to. Ephedrine? I got a problem with it. Steroids? Never. There is a huge difference between them all though. You can't just say "drugs bad" and then move on. And that is my point. What drugs are we talking about? People think it's all steroids and you end up with "Bob had bitch tits". But that's not true. These anti-doping organizations are going the extra mile and saying anything that isn't on the approved list is against the rules, regardless of scientific merit in using them. Why? Because the bogeyman that's why.
If anything it's simply patronizing us all putting them all under the controlled substance label or insinuating that anyone that wishes to take a chemical is somehow a dirt bag, well that's nonsense imo.
This is true, but who decides what the rules of war are and what honor really is? The person that lives obviously.
My point being, in the army I subscribed to "honor, duty, country", but that motto doesn't pay the bills in warfare. I'll play the coward any day if it means I get to live a bit longer on my feet and kill more enemies. If the cause is just I will do whatever I can to continue to fight. By simply rushing in and getting myself killed, well that doesn't serve the cause.
A good example would be the unconventional rebels of the American revolution. They simple didn't have the means to mount a standing army like others did, but they wanted to fight their enemies as long as possible. So they fought like "cowards" and ran away to fight another day.
Another good example is the modern day insurgent group in Iraq. They live to fight another day and it's not due to cowardice. Far from it. Any one of them would die for the cause. But it's just smart warfare.
Were the humans of ancient times cowards when they decided that projectiles were a great way of killing people at a distance?
I guess everyman that doesn't use a short knife or blunt stick in battle is a coward?
Have you ever even been in a fist fight? Because your statement reeks of insulation from the real world. The last thing you want in any battle is a fair fight. Even the Samurai, whose whole being was centered around remaining honorable on the battlefield, realized that and used any advantage they could to kill their enemy.
And if you want to talk philosophy of war in general - well the problem with being a pacifist is it doesn't stop others from killing you. Only warfare does. It's a sad reality.
Welcome to warfare. This is not much different than the same consultations offered ground troops who get up close and personal. The military realized that killing someone else really changes a person early on and brought in people who could help - religious leaders and shrinks.
Thank God I was in the Army during a peaceful period. I would certainly regret taking another life, even if I could justify it as the warrior way (don't be on a battlefield without being ready to kill or die). Particularly when today's battles are so one-sided and the targets mingle amongst the population.
They are trying to shoot people into space for God's sake and that takes passion. This sometimes manifests itself in profanity.
Personally I like this attitude much more than the life-less suit who can't relate to the passionate. I prefer Larry Ellison's "I'm gonna kick the fucking door down and take that shit!" to Bill Gates "well, we better see if we can sneak in the back and steal everything". It's much more honest. Both have the same goal, but one isn't delusional about it.
Hrm, I agree with your point on letting the search feature organize things for you and it made me rethink my position - I'm not against this type of file storage at all. My main objection is to the display itself, how everything is just floating around with some things standing out like a tag cloud, etc. Another example is the "photo app" where one can toss around photos like they are old photos on a table. To me this is neat, but functionally a bit off for me. I prefer a cleaner form of information display with more organization. Your GMail example is a good one. I actually like how it organizes things with labels, but still it doesn't reinvent the typical row/grid display like these do. It's familiar and it makes sense. A good combo of new and old.
What is with this new desktop "paradigm" I keep seeing everywhere from this new browser to the new multi-touch displays? Where everything is disorganized and you simply wander through everything tossing it out of the way like looking through your dirty clothes hamper for a clean set of underwear. Call me old fashioned but I like hierarchical data and tree structures.
I understand it's just a concept, but seeing this type of thing everywhere has me wonder who exactly is doing usability and what they are smoking because I want some.
You know I actually ride my bike to work everyday about 3 miles each way and if a Segway was cheaper I'd get one for the days it is unbearably hot. I live in Florida and some mornings it's a balmy 85 and with no shower at work I gotta do my best to change my clothes and clean up when I get to work.
But that's just my particular situation. I don't think the Segway was intended to replace traditional transportation, but instead to fit into a particular niche that it works fairly well in. In fact, I pass a guy riding one to work the other way everyday.
It's too bad you didn't dig further, because he was alive when he found out about these pending charges:
Snip: WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Prosecutors likely would have sought the death penalty against a researcher who killed himself after learning he was going to be charged in the 2001 anthrax killings, two sources told CNN on Friday.
Amen to that. Bike rider here too. I actually _enjoy_ the ride into work, imagine that. I can hear bids chirping, feel the sun on my face, feel the wind blow. I actually feel alive, it's amazing. Not that every trip is a spiritual journey, but it beats sitting inside a car.
Not me, I'd rather have a unit I can take to another vehicle. I don't understand in-dash computers that can't be upgraded easily. It defies common sense.
But the whole industry is filled with ego and men deal with it fine everyday.
Honestly, I don't see a need to bring in more people based on gender or attract more women. This is a merit based industry. If you do well then no one cares what gender you are. Why should we worry about attracting more women to computing? What is the need?
If I gave a fuck about that I wouldn't be much of a man would I?
I'm not here to worry about female or male feelings when I post. I'm here to discuss topics and rant on them at length. And to maybe find that nugget of knowledge that shows through now and again in the comments here. The good stuff.
Also, the fact that you assume that slashdot moderation is somehow a group consensus shows a real lack of understanding.
How is that a lie? They said when they have it ready. If that never comes it's still true. :P

Much like the shamwow, it's from Germany and you know those guys make good stuff.
Man, those anti-MS jokes never get old...sigh.
So a string walks into a bar right..FUCK THE WORLD!
Holy shit balls. Here in Florida they are labeled with the orchard label, farm label, etc (eg Sunkist) but no PLU labels.

A mention of Android? Cue iPhone debate.

I'm curious - what Tool Set Of The Gods do you use to write this "cutting edge" software you are talking about?

Because the pure emotionless autonomous killing machine hasn't been invented yet. They are working on that.

Yeah no doubt, eh. How dare you! If I thought it was flamebait I wouldn't have responded. I thought it had enough merit to discuss.
And what the fuck is wrong with profanity?

Ever ride a horse for any reasonable distance? One word - ouch.
