Playing on your idea - what I would love to see is something similiar to Project Green light, where developers create game idea submissions, complete with specs, etc, and submit those ideas to a game development company, who in turn chooses one game idea to be developed. It would be great publicity for the game development house and great for the developer that lacks the funding/tools necessary to publish a good game. The developer could also come to work for the game development shop after the project if both parties agreed.
Of course on the other hand the game development companies might not have a lack of good ideas and this is all a waste. But I think it would be a great way to promote the development house to the development community and others. Plus it would be a good tool for recruitment, many game developers simply start out building their own maps or add-ons and get offered jobs, this is simply a spin on that.
"Trusted" computers are computers that can be trusted by media companies not to run software that users can modify, so that media company "content" can be delivered without fear that software modified by users will exercise fair use rights that media companies don't want to allow.
But can the "trusted computing" scenarion be used to protect GNU works? Can we make sure that others are not infringing on the GPL using this or am I grasping at straws here? Is there anything in this initiative that could be used to promote our freedoms?
Remember, this was in a time when DOS was considered cutting edge tech at MS. But still I bet it was more like "You've got 18 months to do it" imposed from the top down, as are most laughable deadlines are.
Pharoah: You've got 18 months to build the pyramids. Why would it take longer? It's just a few cut stones..

This is exactly why I have created a centrino detector 3 miles deep inside an old volcano using an old shark tank left here by the last occupant and 10k gallons of egg whites. It has the ability to detect these centrinos, capture them, and put them on display in the Moma under the name of Justin Bailey.
every time the story is posted people shoot down obvious flaws in logic - YET IT ALWAYS ENDS UP +5 IN??????. once the moderators start modding it down i will stop.
lol, that is funny.
enough 'bout me. you say you have all this experience and can shoot down any platform at will.... well go on then how would you shoot down.NET (not just c#) ?
Hey, I never claimed to be the dev god, far from it, but every platform has flaws. I would shoot down.Net with the same arguments you posted - It is proprietary and locks you to one platform. Portintg an application to Mono, which I have done, is not simply a cut and paste. Some libraries that exist in the.net API simply do not exist in Mono and must be replaced with Mono specific calls. But usually it is simply a small change in the source code. Other times it might be more difficult. For instance, in my code I did a look up on a file's MIME type in the win32 registry. Obviously this wont work in Mono and I had to write a work around to parse the MIME types file (can't remember the name off hand) and get the appropriate type. So the cross platform aspect of.net is still not a cake walk but it's got promise.
Why should I have to plunk down a couple of thousand dollars for a "universal subscription" in order to have access to compilers and basic development information?
You don't need Visual Studio to develop applications in.Net. The.Net framework SDK provides a compiler, documentation, and all the tools necessary to develop a.Net application.
BTW, please don't respond with anti-MS rhetoric and no facts, I care not about MS plans for dominance. I develop for many platforms, don't get attached, and I can shoot them all down at will.
But if you actually read the article you will see that he does use a pump: An aquarium pump provided the necessary pressure for circulation.
So what exactly does this thing do that other water cooled setups don't? I don't see anything special. Although a portion of the heat is disappated by the circulating air over the pipes in the heatsink instead of using a radiator or a tower cooler (bong) this is nothing new.
A. He is not overclocking the machine. B. It's a k-6 so it's not generating intense heat like some of today's chips do.
There's a big difference between the heat output of a k-6 and an AMD XP2200. You can remove the heatsink outright on a k-6 and it will continue to run under normal operating conditions. I simply booted a AMD 2100 without the heatsink and it fried the chip! (Big mistake, I learned the hard way).
You think that because you live good and are not poor that you have made the right choices. You give no weight to chance or luck in life and attribute all failings to bad decisions and all wealth to hard work and keen insight. But this could not be further from the truth. Look at the worlds most wealthiest people. Do you think they are all the wealthiest because they are special and have a gift? Are they rich because they made the right choices while others chose different paths? No. Don't throw aside the value of chance in the world.
By the way, my dad passed away when I was 4 you insensitive clod, leaving my mother to raise 3 on her own. I know, she should have made better "choices" and married someone who would not die. If only everyone was as smart as you.
Why don't you look into yourself and ask why you have no compassion for the poor in America? You think you have the special gift, seeing the correct path to take at every turn, when more likely you were simply dealt a better hand in the game of life.
Do you actually believe that all the worlds poor are poor because of bad choices? Wow. That is probably the most naive statement I have seen in a long long time.
I grew up dirt poor in a coal mining town in Western Maryland, I know what it's like to freeze my ass off because there was no heat. I know what it's like to have to shop at the goodwill and take hand outs from churches because we had no food at home. And It wasn't a choice brother.
If you were standing right here in front of me I'd give you an "eye opening education" you wouldn't forget. Your ignorance is only outdone by your disrespect for the world's suffering. Get a clue. Read a book. Do something you twit and do it fast before irony catches you and one of life's "choices" beats your ass.
Perhaps the ideal Open Source company is not a behemoth run by a ruthless, profit-driven executive, but is something like devIS, run by a Volvo-driving, former Peace Corps volunteer like Gallagher, who talks more about money he has saved taxpayers and how well the sites his company has made serve their intended constituencies than about the amount of money he has put in his (or investors') pockets.
Hey! Some of us like money, american muscle cars, tits, red meat, guns, AND Open Source thank you very much..
I've seen this done, they used mineral oil and the ran the cpu submerged (except for the PSU) . However cost is usually a factor and the pump would need to handle the load, the oil is messy, etc.
I disagree, when compared to the windows API the.Net API is IMO a ten fold better design. I think it will help developers speed up development. Yes you could aaccomplish the same thing within COM/WinAPI BUT it had a higher barrier to entry. Interfaces that previously only a C++ programmer could touch are now accessible to a whole myriad of languages.
Now I'm not saying it's gonna solve every problem, it's the silver bullet, or anything equally laughable. I simply think it's a clean, well designed API that has a great future and I hope, as a windows developer, that I get the chance to develop my applications for linux using this API through Mono.
It's a horrible framework -- it is very narrow in functionality and very broad in its stretch over all aspects of program's design and behavior -- basically such infrastructures are for software development what are "wizards" for system administration.
Can you specifically point out the flaws in the.Net API? To go on and compare the.Net API to berkley sockets and unified file descriptors is a JOKE! How can you even compare socket API to an ENTIRE windows API (which is essentially what.net is, a new windows API)? Can you please point to something with a solid argument? Show the bad design.
And please do the same with Java. What specifically is not good design?
That's a good point, by using both black and white lists and creating a "trust" situation between servers we can eliminate some of the spam.
SMTP is not the culprit

The answer is to modify SMTP as we have it. Require authorization. Make it impossible to forge headers.
Having written various SMTP software for a few years now I would like to comment on the "forged headers". forged email headers mean nothing. When a client connects to an SMTP server to send a message the clients IP adrress is recorded and this is added to the message. You can open any email in a text editor and see the originator of the message, his/her IP address that is. Anyone can add a header to the message, its up to the email reader to intepret it. That system works, and spammers are identified. BUT by the time we catch them they have moved to other locations, or they were using an open relay. Spammers can be caught, the 7 million doallar AOL settlement was evidence to that.
I do however agree with the Authorization argument. If more SMTP server in the world would simply require authentication/authorization from it's users and shut down open relays then it would eliminate a good portion of spam and add a little accountability for users of SMTP. Why An Open Relay is a Problem.
It won't however stop joe spammer from getting a cable connection and setting up his qmail cluster so he can start his "~You Have Won-Some NIGERIAN Money / Tits(c)!!!!!????" campaign at an easy going 50k messages/hour. I believe that changes must be made but they have to be well thought out or we will be in the same boat 15-20 years from now. I believe that instant messaging, presence servers, and presence proxies will take over in the future, slowly replacing email and we need to build up such provisions in these protocols now.
Well actually since the defintion of Innovation is to introduce something new I think Mono qualifies..Net on Linux is new and therefor innovation.
Just because it has bee done before or builds on the works of others does not mean it is not new. Although I would agree that the word innovation has been thoroughly misused enough to warrant a scoff any time it comes up.
Another site mentioned by Martin Fowler is Enterprise Integration Patterns. This site deals with patterns found when creating distributed enterprise systems.
Good point. Unfortunately people do judge you on your appearance. I think we would all love it to come to work in our most comfortable clothes but sometimes the situation dictates otherwise. Even in blue collar work it applies - I once worked as an electrician and my foreman would always say "Dress where you want to be, not where you are". This is a pretty small sacrifice for the reward.
Besides, sometimes it feels good to slip on some nice dress clothes and wow the higher ups. They tend to think that all of us "slackers" can't shine ourselves up. It's great to disappoint those types. Especially when they are writing big checks.
god damn I am old.
I'd say:

You know kids would just find a way around that, to hijack the main computer for their own sinister uses while blaming it on gator or something.
It will be a cold day in hell when my kid can out hack me. That "main computer" was just my honeypot muhahaha!
