David Eddings - See a list HERE. Great books, although the Dreamer series was a bit on the soft side. Regina's song is more of a suspense/horror story and The Redemption of Althalus is a pretty good read. Both of those are stand-alone books. The Belgariad and the Mallorean are both 5 books each. If they liked Harry Potter, they are going to love The Belgariad/Mallorean series. A young boy finds out he is a very powerful sorcerer. Battles Gods, etc. The character Silk and Belgarath's interactions are priceless.

Terry Goodkind - Start with Wizard's First Rule and then go from there. That one will take them a while as the books and the series are huge. Same kind of theme but more adult. Young man finds out he is a very special kind of wizard. The book has some VERY brutal and sexual imagery though so you might want to read it first.

Second option. Educate Barney Fife in what to do yourself. If you have the IP, you can get the ISP. If you have the ISP, you can tell Barney to get a warrant for the user info for that IP for a specific time period, since it is probably a dynamic IP. Then have Barney get a search warrant for that user's home, car, and person, for your laptop. Once he finds the laptop, he can arrest the person who has it, unless that perp is inside his home at the time, in which case Barney is going to need an arrest warrant (that whole pesky 4th amendment thing).

You get the laptop back and a resume stuffer about being a police computer consultant, Barney gets a promotion. All is right with the world again.

  14. I know how you feel... on Hostile ta Vista, Baby · · Score: 1

I purchased an HP DV6327CL laptop last year and it came installed with Windows Vista Home Premium. Now, my problems with Vista are not all about Microsoft. Hewlett Packard has a big hand in why I hate it as well. Come on, I get a Turion X2 machine and it comes with 32 bit Vista? So, I give it a try anyway. Vista is a pig, plain and simple, and there is no way to butter this pig to make it palletable. I was moving a 50KB file from one directory to another, something XP does in a flash because all it is really doing is updating the NTFS record of what directory the file is in. In Vista, it spent a good 30 seconds CALCULATING how long it would take to move the file.

I'm a gamer. I love Team Fortress 2 (DeathByUngaBuna is my name...). Did I mention yet that Vista is a PIG? Now, I don't play on my laptop as a general rule but if I'm travelling, I gotta have my fix. The game under Vista played like crap. Now, I know the Go6150 from Nvidia isn't a power house card, but with Vista, it is a pig as well.

So, I decided to UPGRADE my machine to Windows XP SP2. Having a dual core, 64 bit machine, I decided to install an XP 64 disk I had laying around (MSDNAA is a great program for college students and faculty). Here is where HP comes into the pig fest. After installing XP 64, I go to HP's web site to get the video, mobo, and network drivers for XP 64. Good luck with that. After a day of searching the web and finding many other people searching as well, I gave up and installed XP 32 bit.

XP 32 worked fine and I found all the drivers. Team Fortress 2 came to life and all was right in the world. BUT, I still had this nagging about using a 32 bit operating system on a 64 bit machine (Yeah, my OCD on this was like Monk in a mosh pit).

Since my laptop is primarily a work machine and the only things I REALLY need are Eclipse, basic web editing software, a graphics program, an SFTP program, and Firefox, I bit the bullet and installed Kubuntu Gutsy Gibbon 7.10 (sorry folks, KDE is much more like the windows interface). I gave in on the whole Team Fortress 2 fix while travelling since I really don't travel that much anyway.

Both of my processor cores are running full-tilt-boogie at 64 bits. My video card is screaming (well, it isn't crying any more) with 256 megs of system memory where Vista and XP were only giving it 128. I'm running 64 bit Java and 64 bit Firefox. All is right with the world.

My laptop came to life, Eclipse runs much faster than it ever has, which is good since I'm a Plug-in developer and there are many restarts through the day. My only complaint isn't Linux's fault but rather Adobe's.

PLEASE, ADOBE, GET 64 BIT FLASH WORKING ON LINUX! I hate having to go to my XP machine to watch YouTube!

My XP machine is now dedicated to YouTube, Kontraband, CollegHumor, and Team Fortress 2. Other than that, it sits behind me and acts more as a file server and Bit Torrent box than anything else.

  15. Any cheap laptop will do. on Best Laptop for Going Around the World? · · Score: 1

All you need is a couple of bootable pen drives with Kubuntu on them and any cheap laptop that will boot off of a pen drive will work. Get more pen drives to send your stuff home and you are golden.

No worries about an English language OS, you are carrying it with you.
No worries about DVD, they would probably be broken before they made it home anyway (Netflix anyone?).
No worries about backups, if you have a couple of the pen drives with the OS on them in separate locations.
If you lose the laptop along the way, you can probably boot your OS in any coffee shop.

Look at the Everex laptops. Not rugged, but pretty cheap. Guess that goes hand-in-hand.

    One more thing...can I go?

You have evidently been listening to the media about the Fair Tax. You should really investigate what it is before judging it. Try reading some of the economist analysis and what it really means. You can easily do some research on it by going to http://www.fairtax.org/

As for Huckabee? Do you honestly believe a president can force a theocracy down the throats of a nation? I'm pretty sure he doesn't believe that. However, he is shrewd enough to know where his base is and I'm sure that he plays up his Christianity to consolidate it.

  17. Re:Jesus Horses? on Best Presidential Candidate, Republicans · · Score: 1

OK, gotta weigh in here. Huckabee has clearly stated that he believes God created the heavens and the earth. He has also clearly stated that he does not know HOW he did it, how LONG it took, and that knowing that would not make him a better or worse president. He has clearly stated that he has more respect for an honest atheist than a dishonest Christian. He has stated clearly that it is not the president's job to write eighth grade science curriculum and that those things are best left to the individual states.
    See: http://www.mikehuckabee.com/

Huckabee, as governor of Arkansas, was a GREAT administrator. He was elected several times in a heavily Democratic state.

Why I like Huckabee (this coming from a devout agnostic with atheist tenancies)

    1. He supports the Fair Tax, which has been vetted by hundreds of economists. About the only people who really hate it are tax professionals who would be out of a job, and the IRS, which would be annihilated. It would eliminate the black market economy and also bring more businesses back to the U.S., along with their money. For the truth about the Fair Tax see: http://www.fairtax.org/

    2. He supports ALL of the Amendments to the Constitution, including the Second, and just as important, the Tenth.

    3. He can debate the pants off of any other candidate in the race. He has hands down won every debate in my opinion.

    4. He can say anything he wants about amending the Constitution. He cannot actually achieve that goal and in my opinion he knows that and uses it to consolidate his base.

    6. He has a record of being a very good administrator that works well with Democrats.

    7. He is personally more likeable than ANY of the other candidates. You may not think that is important but put him and Hillary on the stage together and he is going to win the popularity contest every time.

    8. He is a strong supporter of enforcing immigration laws and blocking the flow of illegals into the U.S.

    9. He wants to give power back to the States (Tenth Amendment).

    10. He actually got the NEA to back him because of his huge support for education as governor of Arkansas.

    11. He is Chuck Norris approved (j/k).

Huckabee is by far the best candidate. He is more like Ron Paul but with a huge support for our military and our foreign policy. And, his supporters are not nearly as annoying as Paul's.

So, Huckabee gets my vote. I don't really care if my president believes in evolution. It's not his job to do that. His job is to be a good administrator and to turn this country around and I think he would be better at that than ANY of the other candidates running.
